  1. As the title says, I rarely play my bass, we've not been gigging very much, anytime we get a gig I have to cram to relearn the songs and while I play more than well enough to earn my money coasting isn't what I want out of life and I don't want to waste any talent I might have. Today's my birthday and I'm treating it like a new year and making a resolution. I am going to practice at a minimum 3 times a week for an hour. I've got some info from Scott's Bass Lessons (video at bottom of post) on how to structure practice and each session will be Technique, facility and articulation Time and groove Fingerboard visualisation Genre based studies Language of music (phrases and harmony) So what? I'm posting this here as I need to be held accountable. I need the support of the community to ensure I keep it up because I am easily distracted and fall out of habits far too easily. I'm going to post here each Monday morning at a minimum and briefly chat about what I've been up to that week. I also hope this inspires others to do the same and we can all raise our game together.
  2. I thought that was a bizarre mishmash. I'll listen to the album though, not liked anything they've done since the debut. That record was amazing.
  3. Proving the theory that 'It's all about the hang' I've become the on call dep drummer for a band of pro musicians round here. I've not really played the drums for 10 years despite a kit being setup permanently in my studio. I need to get my hats back from our drummer and practice I suppose.
  4. I absolutely love the album and have never really worried about the badness of it all. Going to put it on loud now. <edit> Interestingly it's got tons of low end which is mainly kick drum, I do have 15" bass drivers in my hifi though.
  5. Yet another thread that makes me realise how special our band are. Everyone turns up about the same time, we have a quick drink, unload all the gear from our respective cars and just get on with it. Very quickly the stuff is setup and seems to be in a good enough place for people to be ok. At the end of the night we take it all apart, put it in cars and go home.
  6. 51 miles for me but sometimes we practice down here about 4 miles from my house. On the plus side we rarely practice lol
  7. If it were me I'd leave. Highlighting the reasons above and being open to a 'please don't go' conversation
  8. I did mean Allparts but it is in fact a mighty mite neck not Allparts
  9. For completeness here is my other P bass. First bit recorded with tone control almost all off, second part wide open. Ti flats on this one.
  10. Thanks, Labella deep talkin flats, standard 2004 USA P bass electrics with both pots wide open. Recorded into Logic using the HiFi DI preset.
  11. That clip above is of both configurations. Maple first then Rosewood. Sound near enough identical that it doesn't matter.
  12. Need to open this with I've been very bored this week. Anyway I've been thinking a lot lately about having 2 P basses, one of which isn't as good as the other one and despite string changes (and ending back on the original ones) and setup change (mostly pick up heights). The second one which is newer has a skinnier neck and with my small hands is maybe a little easier to play. I've been thinking about the best bass I ever played (1974 P, weighed more than the sun, super sound mega thick maple faced neck). I've been thinking about the maple jazz neck I had sitting around. Today they joined forces The headstock is that way because of a failed project and for the sake of playing about doesn't matter. Now what was a surprise this neck is MUCH thicker than a fender one at the heel requiring maybe another 5mm of string height to make it work at all. What was another surprise is that this 'cheap' all parts neck made the bass sound great. I'm going to have to record it now to see if it has made a difference, but I hashed a setup onto it and it instantly played superbly. I went back to my pre CBS P and it felt bad in comparison and will definitely get a setup tweak now. Some fast passages were easier on the Jazz neck. It felt a little cramped compared to a P but to be honest the differences were so small that I no longer feel my D necked P bass is a hinderance (that's been playing on my mind a bit). So once I've recorded the Jazz neck version, I'll revert to Rosewood and record that. Post up the results and think about what it all means.
  13. I'm still giving serious thought to the original question but the live gig I wish I was the bass player on would have been this
  14. Always drink beer on stage, if there is a TV I'm often watching it especially if the audience are too.
  15. True. I'd give 200 quid for it.
  16. I bought some La Bella on my honeymoon in 2010. I've taken them off my bass twice and both times after several months have been dissatisfied with my tone until I realise the bass misses those strings deeply.
  17. My 62/63 p bass takes some effort to play well. The pay off is glorious tone.
  18. Still can't stop thinking about that '77 What am I going to do about it? I've got a mid 2000s P bass, would a neck swap to maple from rosewood give me a chance of getting there? I played a mid 70s one 3 years ago, fat neck, maple fingerboard, growled like a mother.
  19. I can't stop thinking about that Brown 77 OMG!!!!
