1.
thanks for the info folks - i'm after another semi acoustic, but find the lack of forearm contour a strain on some.
I am not sure what you mean by forearm contour on a semi. Have you got an example? The Stylist is an archtop, does that count?
2. Ahpook, I play mine mostly sitting down, at home. As Bolo said it is not as deep as an (electro) acoustic bass or guitar for instance, so it was fine for me on the few occasions I played it standing up. That said I am a rubbish player so it may be an issue for faster/better players used to solid bodies. I must say Bolo, thrash metal on a semi-acoustic huh?
3. There are a couple of the new cabbies for sale on eBay in the US, for instance http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=271431263946 The back is clearly yellow! Looks like Dean are not really sure what they are selling :-D One distinctive feature is that they have a serial number.
4.
I thought that the body on mine wasn't maple. Thought it was made of plywood or something similar.
Ah yes, I see what you mean. The old one is definitely a laminated construction (sounds better than plywood, right?), I am not sure which wood sandwich. But given there was a natural finish version it must have been decent! I am not sure what they mean by maple body and side, it could still be laminated, no? I remember reading somewhere that laminated was actually a good thing for full hollow bodies like the Stylist. Any body knows better? Oh, actually, re-reading the specs of the bass from the Dean site, the new Stylist cabbie is a semi-hollow construction! That would be how it's different from the original run.
5. The Dean Stylist is a medium scale bass (arch top hollow body). Dean are re-issuing the cabbie style one, see http://basschat.co.uk/topic/233236-dean-stylist-cabbie-bass-is-being-re-issued/
6.
You've just reinstated my GAS for one of these. I'm not sure of that's a good thing.
Oops, sorry. The old ones never come up for sale, in any colour. If you're lucky the new ones won't be for sale in the UK! So you can have as much GAS as you like but can't act on it.
7. Ray, have you got a cabbie one? I was never sure if those were different from the standard colour ones - they came out later. Most people change the pickups, I don't mind the sound but I think they should have been chrome. What do you mean by better body?
8. Dean have silently (?) added a new Stylist Cabbie bass to their 2014 catalogue: http://www.deanguitars.com/stylist_cabbie_bass.php I don't how (if at all) they differ from the original run from 2004. Maybe the pickups are different, the 2014 model boasts some DMT Design pickups. I have a black one from that time, but it looks like they only re-issued the cabbie.
9.
side note, whats the bass in your avatar floFC?
It's a Dean Stylist bass, it's the only photo of one of my basses I had at hand!
10. Thanks guys. Sheffield is a bit far, but if nowhere else stocks them I could make a day trip there - they have both the Squier and the Fender. I forgot about Fuzz, I haven't been there since they moved to West Bridgford, I'll find out if they have them in (it's not listed on their website). The proper website for them is http://fuzzguitars.co.uk btw, the link up there is somewhere in Korea (I think).
11. Thanks Len_Derby, i'll check them out.
12. Anyone knows of a shop that stocks a Squier Bass VI, or Fender VI near Nottingham? I went to the Music Inn and the Guitar and Drum Centre but neither had one. I'd really like to try one.
13. Silly question maybe, but is gold hardware actually gold plated?
14. I have no preconception. I works on my Hohner B-Bass which has a dark wood body and neck - a bit like in dannybuoy's picture above. Although it doesn't have gold knobs - that's pushing it a bit
15. I have got the urge to watch the Cure In Orange video. Yeah, the actual video tape...
16. Oh. I am a 17 Seconds kind of guy (?). I'd love to play A Forest in a gig.
17. Yay, The Cure. My favourite band when I grew up. Still do stupid things to go and see them when I can. I am very much like Maude up there. I never really thought about it at the time, but all the music I was listening to in my formative years had very prominent bass lines. The bass was in my blood, but I didn't know it then.
18. I tried one of these in a shop a few months ago. I really liked it. It was very well built. Had it been near that price I would have got it... (got something else since).
19. So, I did as you guys suggested, and the hum goes away when I connect the ground wire from the bridge to the ground on the jack (as per the Ibanez diagram). yay! And there seems to be the remnants of a wire soldered to the switch PCB, where the other 2 grounds from the pickup are connected (black+shield). So I'll solder the mysterious back wire to that. All sorted, thanks a lot ahpook and AngelLaHash
20. Thanks guys. I can't have a go tonight but I'll try those tomorrow.
21. Thanks ahpook, yes it is a really nice bass, and it makes good sound as it is . The serial number suggests it was made in 94, but I was looking at the diagram for 95, I assume that is what I have. I have found a picture of someone else's control cavity, and the wire seems to connect somewhere on the PCB for the switch selector in the top right corner, but the layout of that bit on my bass is different. That's the picture I found: http://s413.photobucket.com/user/rude_mechanical/media/Ibanez%20ATK300/PB170097.jpg.html
22. Hi, I have just picked up an Ibanez ATK300 made in Japan in 1994. It is cosmeticaly superb but a couple of issues sound wise: crackling at the jack and a hum when the switch is in the middle position. I had a look at the wiring, and sure enough there are a couple of disconnected wires: the ground cable from the bridge is not connected to the jack, and there is a mysterious cable (thin, black) coming out of the pickup cavity which is not connected to anything. I have checked the wiring diagram at Ibanez (http://www.ibanez.com/support/wiringdiagrams) and they do not show such a wire! Only a big fat cable with red, green, white, black + shield wires. I have this + the extra mysterious black wire. Does anyone know where the extra black cable coming out of the pickup cavity should be connected?
23. Have you got pictures of the area where the strap button has been moved around?
24. I love these non export ones. First saw one played by the bassist supporting Robin Guthrie (of Cocteau Twins fame).
25. What's the obsession with year of birth basses? There's no way you could have played one back then :-) What about collecting "year of first bass" bass I.e.what bass should you have bought when you got your rubbish first bass?
