A bit of time on my hands during the holiday period and whilst the band are taking a break as well I thought I'd have a go at learning a few bass lines to some songs I'd heard a lot but never tried learning. I made sure they were fairly easy so as not to get too frustrated with my lousy ear Brass in Pocket the Pretenders, just love playing it, even dropping to D tuning on a bass was new to me lol. I had a TE GP12 series 6, bought it new in the late 80's. It was the new fad at the time and I had to have it! anyone who thought they were a slap funk dude needed one I used it all the way up till 2004 or so (a real workhorse) The thing I will say is that I obviously liked it, but evertime I used it I always had a fiddle with the EQ, I could NEVER get the exact sound I was looking for. It sounded great whilst I was having a slap (all 2 or 3 bars) but getting back to playing the ska/reggae/rock type thing I was doing most of that time and I could never get it to sound right. I guess I stuck with it for so long because I'd often get comments from other bass players on how nice the bass sounded, maybe it was the Warwick TE combo that sounded good to their ears. Anyway nowadays I use a set and forget type setting with my new amp, maybe a slight tweak of the knobs if I'm booming or not cutting through, but it seems much easier to get the sound I'm looking for in modern gear.

I'd say converting it has devalued it a fair bit, I'd be looking for a discount if I were buying it. I'd guess that getting it refretted properly and selling it on would aslo leave you slightly out of pocket. Not really sure what a good refret job would cost!

lol, I have a white P that sounds better but a black P that plays better and they both look great imo.

For what it might be worth I use a GB Neox 212T with a Streamliner 600 and it does everything I need. Lots of bottom, punchy, responsive and enough volume for me. It's the same old story, if you can get to try out any of the cabs mentioned in this thread with your Streamliner in a band situation do.. I was lucky enough to be given the 212T to try out on a return if you don't like basis and it's stayed with me.

I never used to use one, but the last bass I bought a 70's P had the thumb rest (not tug bar) and I have started using it and like it (must be an age thing lol) I still move my hand away from the thumb rest position when looking for different sounds, but it's kind of like homebase now for me

Is that salmon pink jazz that he uses a Sandberg? Maybe he is trying to reproduce that one?

Bit of a Sunday morning [i]Jack[/i] a [i]Nory[/i] from me ... Back in the late 70's I started out playing bass and always looked up to Fenders being the holy grail of basses, I could never afford one(even second-hand) having just started out on my working life as an apprentice on £20 a week. Once I'd managed to save up some money I had to settle for an Ibanez Blazer that I bought brand new from Macari's in London to replace my 4Kay short scale that was my substitute for a Fender P at the time. I then moved onto a customised Wal pro1 a lot of the bass players I liked were using Wals at that time (I had the idea then that Fenders were just too one dimensional). Next up I wanted an MM Ray real bad and went to the bass centre in Wapping with all my hard earned and my Wal as part exchange, couldn't believe they had no Rays in stock when I got there and heartbroken I started trying out other bass's in the shop and fell straight away (or as soon as I plugged it in) for a brand new (89) Warwick Streamer. I used that as my only bass for near on 20 years and funny enough on selling it (it was a great bass I just got tired of the tone) I went full circle and picked up a passive Fender J. I now have a couple of Fender P's, the latest one I only picked up last week is a 77/78 model, as well as sounding great and totally different to my 2000's model it also makes me feel real happy that I finally got hold of the bass I had been lusting after all those years ago. Looking back now if Money had been no issue (which it was) I'd of liked to of kept the Wal. P Bass's do it for me now and when they don't there is always the Jazz

Thanks for your replies guys. I took it to my luthier today to get it set-up and he said the same as you guys, that it's just a crack in the varnish and told me not to worry about it. I had the pickups, pots, and neck-heal dated on the bass while I was there and they all come back as stock 77/78 parts so I'm happy about that with it being an S8 serial.

Thought I'd post what he found on this S8 serial Pickups are 77, Neck has a 78 stamp on the heal, Pots are 77, and the scratch plate sticker is the same same serial number as on the headstock. So she seems to be all origional and the latest date puts her at a 78.

Thanks for the info Lozz. Now I just have to hope I get used to the weight of it, everytime I pick it up I'm like OMG it's a tank! 4.9 kg on my scales, not sure how that ranks with regards to weight on these old machines?

Hi. I just picked up a 70's P-bass and wondered if any of you guys have any experience or could shed any light on weather or not I should be worried about what seems to be a hairline crack in the varnish near the headstock. I have attached a link to a picture of it. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/5/hairlinecrack.jpg/ The previous owner has confirmed the crack has been there a while and is only cosmetic.

Joe Strummer was left handed but learnt to play right handed machine gun style guitar. I'm also a bit mixed up left and right handed, as well as being left-eyed which effects me more with anything with eye hand coordination.
