1. Lol, it's always the same when these McCartney threads pop-up. Not sure it's a matter of liking or not, You should be mature enough to give talent, credit where it's due, despite of it's genre, you don't have to like it to appreciate what's going on. Personally I never really thought much of him as a bass player because he wasn't out there sticking it in your face.. Many years later I decided to try and work through some of it and gave it a better listen in context of the songs and couldn't help but be blown away I like Skanks Macca more above ...
2.
Good call, some of the nicest playing basses I`ve played - why don`t I have one, wrong colour schemes. I really should just get one anyway as they are awesome players,
Yes you should Big chunky necks with a fat sound that resonates forever and fairly light weight and comfortable also something you don't mind if it gets knocked about. It's my current number 1.
3. I tell you what, give the Roadworns a try as well..
4. As has been said, they are all different. Everyone I have tried has felt or sounded sligtly different Neck shape/size, body weight, mojo no mojo etc You'll know when you get a good one, it just feels amd sounds right.
5.
The Jam, Butterfly collector.
Good choice, it always creates a hightened sense of awareness for me when I hear the opening. They don't make B-sides like that anymore.
6. Love my P-basses, but it would have to be my Ray so I could try do my Louis Johnson impersenations all day long. Guess my trusty Rumble with it's extension would come a long as well.
7.
Judas Priest evening star clear vinyl 12" , complete with part of rob halforfd s leotard ripped off his back at the rainbow theatre 1981;)
I hope you didn't do the ripping !
8. I have the 12" single of Rock the Casbah signed by the Clash, including Topper. and a test pressing of Sandinista. A Telecaster with Wilko's signature on it.. A few original gig photo's I took back in the day as well.
9.
The Sex Pistols in 76 (would have been 10/11 so little chance of that), The Jam, the original Hanoi Rocks, Guns N Roses.
I first saw the Jam in the Red Cow in Hammersmith 30p to get in , was late for school the next day and got detension.. Just missed the Pistols the end of 77. But did go to school with Viv Westwoods son. Hanoi Rocks a few times at the Lyceum. Edit, for the wrong venue.
10. Well, I saw him a good few times under different incarnations.. But when Joe Strummer played Province Rock here in Finland in 99 with the Mescalaros, would of been the last time I got to see him alive Regret not going.
11. And they said that the music in the 80's was carp! I'll add a couple. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Kzk1xZCiv8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKRJfIPiJGY
12.
I had been into Purple, Zeppelin, Sabbath and the usual mega bands until the night I saw the Pistols. I suppose my judgement was coloured by what I had seen before that night. The overall impression was one of chaos, which we had never seen before, but we all new this was it..... It's difficult to imagine now what it was like for a bunch 19 year old kids,40 years ago, to witness something that did not exist in their minds before that night.....it really cannot be explained...
Cool. I just missed them. Too young but started going to gigs in 78 at 14 years old
13.
Sex Pistols..... Ability.... Zero..... Life changing.....overnight.... The most exiting thing I have ever seen, but still the worst band in terms of musicianship. Nothing was ever the same again after seeing them...
Really? I thought Jonesy and Matlock weilded a decent axe. Cook not bad at keeping time as well.
14. The Jesus and Mary Chain, played half a song threw down their instruments and strormed off for no apparent reason! (just to be cool or weird) Never understood it. I wasn't a fan but went with a girlfriend that was, I paid the entrance for both of us so felt cheated. Edit to say that was about 84-85 .
15. For the rock thing as well, Cliff Williams (AC/DC) is and always has been a strictly flats man on his Ray.
16.
The Yamaha BB range....vintage or modern you can't go wrong.
I'll agree with that as I just picked up my first BB (PJ) last week.. and I'm normally a P man
17.
I just sent this message to a Local mod: It might be nice to have an 'In Memoriam' subforum. Known bass players and other sundry musicians have been dying quite a lot lately and neither General Discussion or Off Topic quite seem to do them justice. Regards, Ben.
Good idea.
18. RIP Animal.
19. I know Forbes gets mentioned on here once in a while Just came across this with Big Country.. I enjoyed his awesomeness and thought I'd share. Not the greatest quality vid, but you get the Ampeg P- bass glory.. and flanger/phaser?
20. Bought a pedal off Jordan. Good comms, arrived quickly well packed, safe and sound. Thanks.
21.
Oo nice anecdotal tie-in there matey
I'm just keen on living in the past.
22. That's a beauty Off topic but I remember the soho sound house, bought my Trace Eliot gear there.

I bought a Yamaha BB bass off Luke. He was even kind enough to post it overseas. Great job on the parcel and wrapping. He sent the bass off the same day I paid. Outstanding. Great bass chatter. Thanks.
25. Just buy a crate of beer, 2 birds with one stone. Even the classiest places I have played use them to get the amps up
