1. I've exactly the same problem. Any (constructive ) suggestions would be appreciated.
2.
Assuming the same scale length I guess it's distance from the bridge that determines tone?
Yes. Have a go on a Westone Rail some time; a startling progression of tone, purely from pickup position. (I'd guess they aren't your thing, but the experiment is well worthwhile if you have the chance.)
3.
It's interesting to note that the original BBs (at least, my old '84 BB400S) had the P pickup reversed: This was fairly common in Japanese basses of the era (my Washburn SB40 also has this) and I suppose theoretically it might brighten the response of the E & A strings - although I think you'd be hard pushed to notice. I did think on the BB it made the pickup a slightly more conveniently placed thumb-anchor than a standard P layout. Unfortunately I don't have the bass any longer so I can't measure the position. Anyone else got an original BB? Jon.
294mm to the centre of the gap between the halves of the pup.
4. I'm glad it works for someone
5. There was a link to an mp3 in Machines' review. I, being a software professional, cannot get it to play...

bass pod users?
out of interest have you ever managed to get it to download patches via usb?
Never tried it, sorry.
7. I haven't, nor have I any easy way of getting them. I'll have a think and see what I can arrange.

bass pod users?

I have an old-style bean-shaped Bass Pod. Its inputs are: 6mm jack, midi in, pedal. So, this version doesn't. HTH
9. I bought flatwounds from L. They came by myHermes, who were not quick but did the job. No problems here. Thanks L
10. I'm just going to stick my neck out here and suggest tuning in fourths, but from D rather than E... because sometimes that blue low D is really nice, if you're in E. But I've given up fives anyway
11. ^ gives a whole new meaning to 'neck dive'...
12.
Is it a genuine vintage tea-chest bass, or is it a new relic'd version? The tea they used in the 60's was quite different, and had a wonderful tone.
Especially for playing the cha-cha.
13. Forgive my curiosity - Where is the truss rod access? Or are there two TRs? It looks as if there's a cutout in the body, but also a channel behind the nut.
14. ooooh... Sadly, out of my range Good luck with your sale
15. That there is your actual mutant beast. I wonder what it sounds like? (Not that it makes much odds to me, since I can't play either...) I wouldn't buy it though; gold sparkle??! Ew.

Kevsy71

I bought some strings. All went well and I'd be happy to deal with Kev again. Thanks
17. Some of the audience liked us. I didn't like us. New bass worked OK, but like all P-basses I struggle to hear what I'm playing.
18. Not necessary to redrill the tuner screw hole; trim a matchstick to fit the hole snugly, cut it a touch too short, put it in the hole, drive the screw (you will need a screwdriver which actually fits the screw head properly). Done. PMed re the J neck.
19. I've a bitsa fretless I put together from a Hohner neck and an anonymous (Kay?) P-body from eBay. It's lovely. Not The One, perhaps, but I will never part with it.
20. They are astounding for the price.
21. I had a trashed one - headstock cut back, body ruined, cut to a paddle shape and repaired with car body filler. The pup sounded great, very warm. The wood has gone but the bits remain. Thanks for the gen - I never knew what it was
