1. Thanks, BassBus, I will say it's done me proud over the years. Never goes out of tune (probably due to graphite truss rods) but has the warm sound of wood. I've never played a full graphite bass, but reading reviews/comments I get the impression they're very 'clinical' in tone. I'm not sure my rather untidy technique would suit it - finger style with occasional pick (I can't slap: tried, failed).
2. Hmmm, I feel slightly overwhelmed by the quality of [Status] porn on here. Nevertheless, here's my own beautiful instrument, owned since new, made of wood, smells like wood, feels like wood, gives me.... thrills! Classic Status sound, looks, etc. It's a 1994 Energy V, ash body, maple neck, rosewood f'board, 1 x steel + twin graphite truss rods:
3.
Here's my list - all 4 string. I still own the ones underlined: Framus Star Bass; bought for a fiver in 1970 and so old that the control plate was sellotaped on. Long gone. Watkins Sapphire Bass; looked the part but had a very heavy headstock. Long gone. Fender Precision Bass; bought in 1973 and probably early 60's. Why oh why did I sell it in 1980?! Fender Precision Bass; bought in 1979 and still owned. It's a '76 and is my pride and joy. It's always out in the front room but I don't gig it much anymore. Bass Collection 301 defretted; bought in the 80's some time. A good bass, and pretty, but I just didn't get on with it so it was sold. Fender USA '62 Reissue Jazz; early '90s. Bought in 1996 and my gigging bass ever since. In my opinion this is the finest bass ever made. Dean Edge Fretless; bought in late 90s and fun to play with. Fender Japanese 51 Reissue Precision Bass; a fantastic bass with a gorgeous tone, but I didn't have a context for playing it then, so sold it with some regret since. Here's my problem - I can't stop looking at basses on line, but why do I want to own another one when I feel strongly that instruments owned should be played? I'm looking at the new USA Standard Jazz, or, and I'm seriously struggling with this, the USA '64 Reissue Jazz in Lake Placid Blue (I'm dribbling as I write it). How can I face these evil desires down? I play in a 50s/early 60s band and I think the dampened bridge would give me a good sound. Has anyone played one or got one and could comment? I have a big birthday coming up next year which isn't helping.
Paultrader - how do you find your Dean Edge Fretless? What strings do you use? I started with round wounds but tried flat wounds after a bit cos the others started to groove the [rosewood] fingerboard. They give a softer sound, very 'woody', especially on neck p'up, though slightly lacking in definition - quite a like an upright in a way, I suppose. how do you get your best sound?
4. My word, am I late [by 4 years]? Sorry, folks! Anyway, my Status was my first 'proper' bass after beginning on a Yamaha RBX200 at university. Details as follows: Energy V, bought new in 1994 (I think) Ash body Bolt-on maple neck with twin graphite truss rods + single steel truss rod Rosewood fingerboard - my preferred choice on all my basses Original pots were replaced by Rob in about 2002 (?) Otherwise, it's as I bought it, apart from smelling of smoke for a long time due to gigging in pubs a-plenty before the ban... yuk! Here's a pic: I do have one minor moan re the poll - Energy & Series 1 are put together when they are different models, aren't they? Energy only has the treble cut/boost, not the bass pot. Not really important, though. My Status has been my main gigging bass ever since I owned it. I've tried various others (Ibanez, Dean, Wal, Epiphone electro-acoustic during those heady 'unplugged' days) but always returned to the Status. Played through my GK head (simple but effective controls) & Ashdown cabs, it just feels comfy, like an old armchair. And the sounds are so broad-ranging, like the woody 'acoustic' feel through to the honky, jazzy growl. I love it. Superb instrument!
5. Previously owned: Wal 4 string [severely changed with Seymour Duncan pickups] - because it had been 'spoiled' already, I then filed down the frets. Stolen! Epiphone 'El Capitan' electro-acoustic 4-string. Stolen. Currently owned: Yamaha RBX200 4 string (1992) Status Energy V (1994) Dean Edge 5 string fretless (?) Ibanez Ergodyne 5 string (2004) Never owned or played a Fender, Ricky or Musicman ... am I the antichrist?!
6. Could try Green Day, American Idiot. We 'loomed' it in with Pretty Vacant as a kind of new punk-old punk mix. Very popular, although we had to slow down 'Idiot' and speed up 'Vacant' a little bit - Pretty Vacant is surprisingly slow. Definitely agree with most posters here, some great suggestions, particularly Muse & Fratellis. How about White Stripes?
7. Thank you, everyone, nice to feel welcomed. Steve-bbb, once I've got a proper pic I'll get it on there - I had a butchers at the thread and there are some niiiice Statuses (Stati?) on there. The only pic I have currently is one of me playing it in studio, and you're not seeing THAT!! The Ergo is relatively new for me (erm, 2004 I think?) and was my most recent gigging bass, cos it looks great & is light and easy to play. Not sure I used it to its full capabilities and I know the Status better, so prefer that one... 'specially via the GK!
8. I feel I should have found this years ago, but anyway, here I am. Um, introductions, well I've played since uni days (that's a long time ago now!), been in a few rock covers bands, currently not in a band. Work restrictions have prevented me for the last 5 years, after a big move from SE England to Scotland. In fact, I haven't been in a band for about 7 years now - feeling the pull again though. Basses I have are: Yamaha RBX200 4-string, originally black but resprayed 'Toyota Corolla' blue, neck/headstock still black (1st bass) Status Energy V, natural, ash body, maple neck, rosewood f'board (main gigging bass) Ibanez 'Ergodyne' 5 string, orange, composite body with bar and piezo pickups. Here's a pic: Dean 5 string fretless, black... none more black... it's like death, like a mirror, etc etc!! As for amps, I have a right mish-mash including a 600W Ashdown head & appropriate speaker cabs (4x8", 1x15") and various 15-25W practice amps. But my favourite is my old Gallien Krueger 400RB, 200W head. It sounds fookin' brilliant!! What an amp! Metal, solid, weighs a lot for its size, simple controls, just does what it says on the tin! I love it. I'll try to add more photos later. Looking forward to chatting with you all... Oh, meant to add preferred bassists - in no particular order: John Deacon John Entwistle Norman Watt-Roy Mark Bedford Alan Lancaster Flea Jaco Chris Wolstenholme I'll probably add more another time when my memory returns
