Ok..so I'm kinda getting bored of my strings..
Wil replied to Pedro1020's topic in Accessories and Misc
Elixers. They keep their "bite" practically forever. Other than that, DR Highbeams. -
Passive basses at the moment, and then a slight bass and mid boost on my DHA preamp, a slight treble cut (to tame the bright switch a bit), fat and bright switches on. Great pick tone.
I spent the best part of 3 years buying, trying and selling bases to find what I wanted. I decided to take the best parts of all of the basses I had liked and have them made into something of my own. I began with a wenge neck like my Thumb bass had. Ebony fretboard like my Bass Collection 5 string. Mahogany body like my 30th Anniversary Stingray. routed for a SCBP pickup and tele headstock like my '51 reissue P bass. I did in fact own over 30 basses but these had the best features. To make it really different I had the body finished in gold flake, all gold hardware, the gold frets that they offer and Optima gold strings. Looks really mental/out there man/ gay(according to my drummer) but I stand by it and it does look fantastic, especially under lights. I only have one problem with it. they make the necks so stable that there is no adjustment to give more relief due to the steel rods that they use. I could actually take the truss rod out and the neck wouldn't move. I plan on taking it to Jimmy Moon in glasgow to put a bit more relief into it and also fix the small mistake I made when putting it together. I wanted a Warwick just-a-nut but the neck was only precut to fit a standard nut so I went in and created a bigger groove and fired the new nut in. Unfortunately I put it in the wrong place so the notes on the first few frets are a mile out. Apart from that, its fantastic. Absolutely rock solid - not neck heavy like some people have said in the past. Highly recommended for anyone who wants something to suit them that they cannot find in a music store. Just make sure that you know exactly what you want cos you'll get hee haw for it when you sell it because most people unfamiliar with their work believe them to be just a parts company rather than a company making what I would call high quality guitar parts easily better than any american fender i have played.
Any pics? -
Tom Waghorn in Queen's Square, Bailey Brothers, Eltham Jones in Sound Control. If you just need a jack wiring though, get a soldering iron and have a go, it shouldn't be too hard.

Finally got a chance to use my new toy at rehearsal last night, so a quick review is in order... I run this as my main tone shaping section straight into the effects return of my Little Mark 2. I run this into a GK Neo 1x12 and a GK Neo 2x12. Last night I was using my US Jazz bass strung with Elixers. The tone I was going for was a gritty, grindy punk tone, raging SVT style, and although I must admit I've never used an SVT, this rack does deliver lots of grit and grind. Playing with a pick, with the treble cut slightly and mid and bass boosted using the active EQ on the rack, I had pretty much the perfect pick tone. Nice valve saturation, harmonically rich, but not fuzzy or wooly. The EQ does the job well, its not super powerful but certainly does all I need it to. I tended to keep the fat and bright switches turned on, as I like a bit of top end bite, and who doesn't like fatness in their tone? Playing parts that sounded a bit lifeless and sterile with a pick with the LM2 came alive when I used the DHA. I did find in a few songs I needed a toned down cleaner tone though, and I ended up having to bypass the unit for the reasons stated below. Once I'd found the tone I wanted I pretty much left it like that. The inherant tone of the unit seemed to compliment my Jazz very well. My only concern is that I had the gain no higher than a quarter all rehearsal, but it was providing overdrive at this point. I may look into some lower gain valves as I would like a bit of headroom before it breaks up - as it stands the tone is great but its not possible to get a totally clean tone (unless I use the handy bypass switch). In all, a great sounding overdrive and a useful EQ. If you like grindy rock/punk bass sounds, its ideal, and sounds great.
I prefer choke just becauses it's busier, bth neither have been particulary freindly to metallers!
VJ is plenty friendly to metallers there's loads of support for Shadowlaw, Burning Skies, Mea Culpa etc, plus I think most of the posters who actually post these days listen to metal, among other things... We are prone to take the piss, however. Just a touch.
Oh, I thought they were the same thing, since voodoojunkie's what I found when I googled "Choke forum" - I haven't tried signing up for Choke!
The voodoojunkie Wiki has the following to say about Choke:
Choke is a magazine. Choke has an internet forum. Choke Forum∞ The Choke forum is the anti-VJ. Several users claim to have succesfully bridged the gap between VJ and Choke, but they are usually suspected to be witches. Choke users usually prefer music produced by bands that have names with 9 or more words in them. The more obscure the band, the higher credibility this gets them within the Choke inner circle. They score extra points if the music was published prior to 1980. Choke also runs a regular music night at a Bristol venue. To recreate the music at such an event, you are advised to strap on a bass guitar, snare drum and a cymbal, and throw yourself down a staircase. Choke is available on Computers CHOKE IS NOT INTO METAL AND IS NOT YOUR FRIEND
But there are some sound people on there, shockwave and JoeGarcia for example! Some chokers also post on VoodooJunkie, to muddy things.

What ever happen to all of the (bass) heroes ?
I saw Reuben live when they supported Billy Talent and I have to say they're not all that, Jon particuarly didn't impress me, but what the hey. Talking of Billy Talent, there first album when they were titled 'Pezz' is not stop with awesome bass lines, I really recommend to anyone because its a total unknown treasure. As for Hero's Jason Newsted is still clattering around somewhere..... AND Stuart Zender is still out on tour, he's awesome.
Billy Talent are awesome. My band did a tour with them years ago, before I joined unfortunately, as I would've loved every minute of it There are loads of great players in modern bands out there. You might need to (heaven forbid!) actually go to a gig to see them, but they're there. As for the 4 string bass not being able to offer anything new, well... there are only 8 notes in western music no matter how many strings you've got. Juan Alderete in The Mars Volta and Chris W from Muse are managing to do pretty innovative and interesting stuff, to name but two. -
Crazy Kiwi has owned and may still own some cutlass basses... I've never seen let alone played one, but if Cass Lewis from Skunk Anansie is a fan, so am I

Looks a bit old fashioned to me.

It seems Warmoth have stopped making Mockingbird bodies... bit of a shame. -
That's right. 4 8" speakers. Nice amps, I think Merton owns a 4x8 model now, not sure what he paid though...

Hugh Quarshie (Dr Ric Griffin from Holby City) bought a bike from me when I worked at Halfords Cribbs Causeway... is that tenuous enough?
Since we wern't using the bass speakers from the PA I decided to do this.... Makes a difference and no mistake! Not sure of the consequences of adding a 4 Ohm speaker to an 8 Ohm combo though. Anyway it sounds huge!
You risk frying your amp if that speaker is 4ohm - I'm assuming the internal combo speaker is 8ohm and that the amp will have a minimum load of 4ohms. Putting a 4ohm speaker with an 8ohm speaker together will most likely give you a total impedance of 2.7 ohms (if the wiring is in parallel), so unless that combo goes down to 2ohm (which is unlikely) it will probably run very hot and may well die on you!

I'd love to have a mustang, but I doubt it would perform for punk - I'd need more tension.

Praise be to Shai Hulud!

Parcel Arse should be delivering my BCR tomorrow - same as you, they tried to deliver yesterday but didn't bother putting a slip though the door to tell me, its only because I checked today I discovered it was sat awaiting £79 in customs charges at the depot. Cost me bloody £12 to have them redeliver tomorrow too! Buggers.
