1.
Don't let these guys fool you into thinking it's easy to play 12 bar blues well. This is some dude on youtube who wrote down John Paul Jone's bass line note for note from the Lemon song and reproduced it for this video. It's dauntingly brilliant but don't let it put you off .......enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9-DNTY8ONw
That vid is great! Is that a modulus?
2. I used to have a wood necked S1 5 string like Rich's, but without the fancy top. It was a really nice bass, had a lot of growl and a real bargain. I also had a lovely S2 classic which in hindsight I wish I still had, I bet it would sound immense through my current amp. Never really liked it paired with my old Markbass though. I'll probably own another Status one day... I don't think I've ever played a better built bass than the S2.
3. Just out of curiosity, but what are the differences between a Matrix, Empathy and S2?
4. For me I set the mid freq. at about 3 o'clock, give the mids and bass a touch of boost, and back the treble off a touch. Instant punch!
5. Sansamps sound fantastic to me. My head is afaik a BDDI and Paradriver with a power amp, and I love it! Very versatile and a massive range of rock bass tones.
6. I'm weedy. Hence, I wont even consider heavy stuff these days. I even find carting my Schroeder about a pain in the arse, so I'd hate to think how much I'd resent a big Trace cab.
7. I use elixers, 45 to 130. Good firm tension and semi bright tone that lasts ages. I've also used DR High Beams which are great but have far lower tension relative to the gauge you use. I tend to prefer the Elixers simply because they need changing less often. I reckon Hi Beams would suit your style very well.
8. More that the angled drivers in many of their cabs can point directly at your ears if you put the cab in the right spot. That in addition to the thumpy mids they put out makes them very easy to hear in a mix. Works for me anyway!
9. If hearing yourself is your biggest concern, then may I suggest a Schroeder?
10. The old Starcaster from the late 70s was a great looking guitar - I've always wanted one. I was a big Radiohead fan in my teens and Jonny Greenwood plays one on occasion, you see: The new ones are a budget line that bears no relation afaik.
11. The name on the headstock doesn't matter as long as it's a decent bass. I've been really impressed by some of the Squiers I've played in the last few years - some have even been nicer put together than MIM Fenders. I'd be happy to gig any of them.
12. I enjoy high beams. The tension is a bit too low for my taste though they are a great string for pick playing.
13. What integers? Er... 145?
14. Chicks dig skills. Computer hacking skills, bowstaff skills...
15. What can I say, I'm hard for being in a band.
16. To be fair, I wouldn't expect any pedal to continue working after it had had beer spilled on it. Unless of course, it was advertised as beer proof
17.
Although it only makes sense if you work with other musicians who are readers and use notation to communicate the musical parts.
This. What do I bring to my bands? Mad bass skills. Good sense of humour. A good ear. Flexibility and commitment. Pro equipment. Good ties with local promotors. Backing vocals. A bag of haribo. Decent hash. A mean cup of coffee. Concientiousness.
18. If that's the case then it's worth less than half the cash value of your Sandberg. As for whether they will compare as basses, only you can make that call, you might find the Spector fits you well even though it is more of a budget instrument. I'd only trade with some cash your way though, based on the info we have anyway. *Edit - of course you mentioned a Boss br-900cd too. In terms of new values, if you bought one of those and a Spector Performer you're near enough looking at the cost of a Sandberg Basic, yes. Whether it's worth it or not though is up to you at the end of the day.
19. Could be a Spector Performer? The bridge looks different too.
20. I've got a Legend Custom (through neck) and it's great. Plays really well, and sounds very full and punchy with a lot of sustain. I don't know what the quality of the bolt on versions is like however.
21. I would have thought the key would be sharp? Boom boom!
22.
A rack Sansamp and a power amp aren't hard to come by. In fact I have spares right here.
Believe me, my GAS list has a paradriver DI and a lightweight class D poweramp at the top of it. It's just the lack of money or justification I'm missing
23. Fantabulous cabs. If only I had a stereo poweramp or a 2ohm capable head I'd be all over this like an itchy rash.
