1.
Not much time for chordal playing on the bass. Just never liked the sound that much.
Buy more effects!
 2.
if this was a 5 string I'd have had your arm off.....
I'd be much better at 5 string If I had an extra arm!
 3.
nope, it was a Saturday afternoon and we were the only ones in there, yet still such negative customer service..
I would just have stayed in there for a while watching him do his important stuff and making him feel uncomfortable!
 4.
It's not just one note.
Sounds like it to me - one dug in note, slightly muted somehow.
 5.
I have the album, and I just put The Fifth into iRehearse and slowed it to 50%. I can't hear anything like your soundcloud link, the notes are single hits, so I reckon it's your Transcribe software glitching. It would be bordering on superhuman ability to tremelo that fast, even the fastest Flamencos wouldn't be able to.
It does sounds like one of those [glitch(ˈɡlɪtʃ)|minimal] albums I listen to!
 6.
I admit I hardly ever have to play anything lower than an E
Oddly I quite often feel the need for a low D or C but I quite like the discipline of trying to make the bassline work and "stay bassy" without it, throwing in an extra arpeggio or chord here and there (I love using chords and double stops as a way to thicken things up timbrally). An example of a technique I use that I'd find hard on a 5 or 6 is using thumb, index, middle, ring on E, A, D, G, each basically muting the strings unless they are plucking them. It allows the string to be deadened really quickly directly over the pickup which is great for use with gated fuzz and tracking effects. I'm not down on sixes or anything, would like one again, more so than a 5 actually - I'd string the 6 like a guitar, E-e, or maybe B-b would be cool too.
 7. I prefer 4 strings because I can thrown in all sorts of techniques without having to think too much about the muting. With a 5 I have to play more conservatively to keep everything under control. If I wasn't rubbish that would help, but I think with any given level of talent the same thing applies. I often don't like B strings because when a string is that thick compared to its length it sometimes seems to act more like a gong or chime than a string, you can get all sorts of weird metallic overtones. The B string also needs a different technique with all that extra weight, needs a gentler touch. I don't like C strings because they don't have any notes on them that are bassy, and I picked up the bass 'cos I wanted to play bass. Agree that it's nice for chords though.
 8.
Yeah to me it just sounds like a Jazz bass with both pickups full on, maybe with the pickups set a bit too high.
I only listened to it once but that was my impression. I don't think a great jazz bass 'growl' comes from putting loads of distortion - I've got best results from blending the output from both pickups, with a nice high J, setting the action to introduce a little string clank at the start, picking aggressively between the pickups. That can already give quite a lot of interest to the note attacks - add a bit of actual distortion and you get a really savage sound.
 9. To quote myself from this thread
Drive effects sound can bad with bass because a single, hard clipping gain stage causes a buzzy sound on bass frequencies, and the perception of loss of low end. Modulation effects can sound bad as the phasing can cause loss of low end. Reverb and delay can sound bad on low frequencies as the mix can end up sounding muddy. Synth and other pitch tracking effects can sound bad as low frequencies and percussive playing techniques are harder to track. Compression effects can sound bad on bass as.... well this guy says it better than me: http://www.ovnilab.c...ws/guitar.shtml Of course there are solutions to these problems... but the bass sounds so cool on its own that there are challenges to making and using effects in a way that enhances rather that trashes!
So 'guitar' effects may be likely to suffer these problems, but there are some effects sold as bass effects that don't offer good solutions to these problems either.
 10.
Never go into music shops anyway as I can pretty much guarantee they won't have anything of any interest to me.
Sadly I too usually find this to be the case. A lot of mainstream are targeting people who are Ignorant of where they could get better stuff for cheaper. I took at the price tag and think "I may be an idiot, but even I have limits". I'd like a store that was the music equivalent of TK Maxx. It's those kind of stores where I might make an impulse buy, and where it's actually worth the store's time to have me browsing around in there.
 11. <- XIX compressor.... closest I'll ever get to having a Mondrian!
 12. I bought a home Cinema Amplifier from BHF - same thing, Hermes, £4.50 delivery. If it had actually arrived it would have been a good deal!
 13. Maybe he should put it through the full Pastorius relicing process!
 14. Did they come with a couple of books then though, like this one?
 15.
Regardless of the ethics of flipping it so quickly on eBay, at least have the decency to use your own photos.
There is something about that shot of the two of them in bed together that catches the eye though
 16.
Fear not folk no basses will be sold via basschat
For some people it may be that that's the issue - the implied 'code of honour' seems to be that if you get a nice deal or a nice bit of gear through BC, it should be offered up here for the same price if it's ever moved on. However, now that there's the fee for selling perhaps it's not fair to expect that course of action, especially if someone's had a bad experience trying to sell here before, as it costs money to do. It also might have seemed a bit mean to put a model T back into the BC pool again when Rayman still has its sister up for sale...
i have lost way more money buying and selling over the years than you can imagine.
I'm sure we can all agree that's the fundamental principle of this game!
 17. Have been enjoying playing this a bit the last couple of days but still 'bump' for now...
 18. Yes, it is a pain not knowing whether you'll get the full amount or not for gift! A buyer who knows the ropes will know that "£100 paypal gift" means that you as the seller wants to see £100, so they should pay any fee - but to be totally unambiguous, you need to specify to the buyer that they pay any fees if they are paying by card. Explained here : https://www.paypal.c...ay-fees-outside
 19. I think fees apply when the money backing the payment is coming from a credit card, or when it's marked as a payment for goods rather than a gift (and sometimes when it's cross-border payment.) Gift from paypal balance or bank balance shouldn't incur a fee. If the buyer intended to pay gift but didn't, it may be possible to reverse the payment and only lose a few pence (20p or something) and then re-do it as a gift. No help if the sellers payment is backed by credit card, but even in that case I think they can usually choose to pay the fees themselves. Sound about right? Or is your experience different? Either way sorry you've been short-changed, never a good feeling!
