1.
If you're prepared to do a bit of research and ask a few questions, your best bet might be to upgrade your drivers to something like the Faital12fh500, assuming you like the Genz cab. These, I believe, are the ones in the top-of-the-range Vanderkleys and probably not a million miles away from what Barefaced is using now: http://www.lean-business.co.uk/eshop/faitalpro-12fh500-8ohm-12-500watt-pa-speaker-p-1174.html You'll be able to sell the drivers that are currently in the cab to reduce the overall cost of the exercise.
I dont think the cab is holding back the lows and some gb cabs are already faital loaded anyway.
2.
I may have missed some detail in this but what happened to have you fork up the full amount before completion? I have only recently got into custom stuff and every time it's been a case of pay a deposit and then the rest upon completion, and I've actually seen a picture of my item before I have paid the rest off.
I hate to be a pedant (or do I,lol) but we had fookin pages and pages about Barefaced taking the final payment money well over a month or two in advance of delivery, thankfully I gather everyone did get their cabs and Alex is conquering the world as planned
3. As much as it sucks it can and does happen to all brands from time to time, I recall that bent stingray neck about a year ago as in side to side! Id go with Dingus and judge them by their actions in the long run, hopefully it will still be your dream bass with a tale of great customer service
4. I'll be honest I'm not great at setting up my eq either even after all these years, i guess it's why there are lots of crap sounds guys about,i have read on here many times that person x has been doing sound at gigs for twenty years, imo it guarantees nothing! It's a funny thing because you might find reducing the bass actually gives you a bigger Fuller deeper sound as the power is left to cope with more audible frequencies, the Genz shuttles are shelved at 80 hz normally and i think 37hz with the LF light on, generally anything lower than that is just air movement and speaker damage! I use the same cab with a five string active bass without the cab getting even close to it's bottom end limit,i think you need to tweak something?
5. Crazy, so that's basically the same as my classicray5 for two grand less?!
6.
And the what now? :-)
If your amps eq has a shelf let's say at a minimum of 40hz then any frequencies below that won't be sent to the cab so you could buy a 4x18 cab only to find it has no more low end than the 2x12, i strongly suspect this is the case also if you are setting your amp with that much low it will be sucking the wattage too which won't help by the sounds of things. A streamliner and Genz neox 2x12 flat out on the bass control and volume control sounds like a gig i don't want to be at
7. Is it possible the in built bass shelving will already be holding the bass back further than the cab?
8. Where is ebs freak? I believe he stopped using a 650 in favour of a 350 with no issues and he needs a lot of head room because he is a tickler, lol. That said he is all in ears and the ebs rig is just a stage dressing!
9. The poles off centre thing has lots of flaws, the volume drop is only as the string tension and damping is occurring, try holding the string bent right between poles and pluck it there, it makes no difference at all. Play a solo and bend the strings on a strat to see how it makes no difference there and what about angled pickups that are used straight or angled? The magnet damping the string because the pickup is too close because of people trying to raise the g volume is the chief suspect, lower the whole pickup right down and raise the treble end until it gives a nice clear output with no magnet damping then in a band setting (most important imo) raise or lower the bass side until the bass has an even output, simples as annoying people say
10. That's exactly my problem, ideally a monthly two hour lesson would keep me ticking along nicely, ok a weekly one would be better but work and life gets in the way so i will take a month or two to implement each thing I'm taught. Fingers crossed Jake will be passing through early next year so he can call in again and see if I'm improving.
11.
I am amused at the idea that a review of a touring show would read.... '....superb vocals from Ruthie Henshaw and the dancers were fabulous but the one thing that let the whole thing down was that the pit orchestra was using a fretless bass player instead of a fretted. The tragic undermining of the musical integrity of 'We Will Rock You' (Queen bass player John Deacon always used a fretted) was tantamount to heresy and the offending musician should be piloried and never work in this town again. Ruthie! Insist on a pick!!'
I was just about to point out how many Queen songs are recorded on fretless even if he didnt play fretless often live, I have been learning to read with the Queen book and it states which songs are fretless, lots of them and they sound great for it IMO. I heard this on the radio the other day and it too has a fretless vibe to me in places? Hard to say as Deacy is a master of doing just what we are talking about where you can make it sound just like a fretted if you dont slide about. Fat Bottomed Girls, Bicycle Race,Crazy Little Thing Called Love,Play The Game,Under Pressure etc etc all Fretless
12. Jake gave me a lesson last night and thought the Gedo I have was a decent bass for £1000 thereabouts including delivery, bow (german and going on ebay!) bag and even a pot of pops rosin. He made it sound very good anyway
13.
I've heard rumours the 3.0 may well may a come back with Fender.
Good because they are great, no fan either so prefect for home practice!
14.
Not another Jake's brill thread? I am going to have to merge them AGAIN!!
Yep
15.
Great stuff. Jakes the man!
I will still be learning from your site Geoff, in fact we started from your walking bass lines print out just to show Jake how good (terrible) my reading is
16.
Awesome !! What books are you working from?!
I have been working from the Rufus Reid book for a while, Jake could tell exactly where i was up to ability wise already and the things he has showed me should help me progress both more quickly and maybe more importantly with a much better technique.
17. The fet channel on the 9.2 max is brilliant too, that's something the streamliner hadn't got, all the Genz heads have a place even the 3.0 is a great head as a super tiny spare with a di too.
18. You wont beat a genz contour combo right now imo, crazy bargains!
19. As promised by Jake (jakenewmanbass) ages ago he said if he was coming this way he would let me know so I could get a proper lesson, he did and he has given me one (two hours) Lots to practice but it was just what I needed, no one had tried my bass or my bow other than other electric bass players so it was a nice start when they both passed Jakes test, onto standing and supporting the bass where he has got me balancing the bass better which no matter how many clips I had watched I couldnt fine tune it, arm weight and finger spacing/hand shape, various note stops and then shifting in quite a few ways leading to some fairly complex slides etc. Finished with some bow technique so I finally now how to hold the damn thing! If I take my time and apply all the little bits he has taught me im sure they will add up to a big step forward, over to me to practice now. Thanks again Jake, really good way to spend an evening
20.
And there's your market. "Hey guys, I bought this early 60s Fender...sits on my wall for me to gawp at." And that's the reality for most of these basses that are bought. Funny you say, "But it won't be that great a car to drive by today's standards" - I know many Classic Car enthusiasts that love their cars because they don't drive to the standards of todays, safe, unexciting in comparison, cars.
You called! omg a new bmw would bore me to tears compared to my modest classics I have now never mind a classic ferrari, as you know our 12 month old golf used to sit on the drive so I could take the morris to band practice everyweek
21.
NX2-212T - £379 - WOW!!!
Anyone thinking of buying a cab or even two if they have a two ohm head should be all over that, you wont beat it and I dont think the used market will suffer too much, why would anyone sell theirs cheap in a year when you wont be able to buy a new one and it will still be a match for £1000 cab from an other brand. Fender have been dealing with the warranty for years and still are but as I understand it arent fender in trouble anyway, surely thats more of a worry for the bass playing community?
22. Ive never bought into amps as investments in the same way as basses, my neox 2x12t and shuttle 6.0 I started with have earnt their keep with 4 years of trouble free function band duties, I only paid £530 for my shuttlemax9.2 off ebay in as new condition when I was ready to put £1000 on a 0% credit card for a new one, I even got the fancy carry case with it too. I also bought my 3.0 used and my neox 1x12t came from a bc member, to sum up I have a lot of genz gear that owes me nothing really so im still very happy
23. You wont beat genz gear for value right now, them combos everywhere are selling off are brilliant, its the only time id say buy new over a used amp from here for a similar budget.
24. I dont know what some people do with all their power? I run a shuttlemax 9.2 head into a 4ohm 2x12, stingray with bass boosted and plenty of erb notes yet I can easily run my shuttle 3.0 into that cab and play a gig with that as the only backline, in fact the bigger the venue the less power I have needed due to the bigger pa and monitoring.
