1.
Well I haven't felt the need to change anything and it plays lovely, so either I'm easily pleased or you got it spot on Pete!!
Ah well I'm quite chuffed with that then, maybe I should start offering pro set ups
2. Well obviously, the one that sounds best would be the maple one
3.
Look up a series of videos on YouTube by John Carruthers, I think they're on Elixir strings channel, he takes you through the basics. After some persuasion from the good folks here on BC I had my first go at it, with the JC video playing on my iPad while I did it, it's very satisfying! Last one I had done professionally was awful, took it to the same guy I've used many times, not sure if he was having an off day because he's usually very good. I didn't have time to check it when I picked it up and as he'd done plenty of stuff for me before, I didn't think there was any need, but when I got it home and played it, it was a buzzing mess. That sort of convinced me I had to learn how to do it and give it a go.
I like my own set up and did one for a bass ern500evo had off Ebay but I bet it wasn't exactly how you like it was it Lee?
4. I like to throw in a Billy Sheehan ring finger now and again too, never noticed much difference between all three options.
5. One mans pro setup is another mans unplayable junk
6. Do you mean you use the schaller alone? If so then thats why I added it, its the piezo ones that cause feedback, the schaller can go as loud as you like on its own as it turns it into a big electric bass, its not as bad as I was expecting though much more DB than I expected from other peoples comments id read elsewhere, once I get the blend right it will be killer for live shows
7. I have made a nice set of black f hole covers which I might use to allow more blend of the K&K live but it sounded great on its own at the jam session so just a bit of the real DB sound mixed in should be enough for me, I am not sure about sitting down for the gig
8. These things really only matter between us bass players, my wife could not tell you who Nate is, Matt Freeman, Gary Willis, Geddy Lee, Marcus Miller etc even though she probably has some of there recordings in one way or another, I dont know who most of them are without googling! Most of my musician friends would struggle with most of them too, Adam Clayton and Geddy would probably be the best known and I dont think many people know who Marcus is never mind the obscure Ibanez and Yammy sigs.
9.
Or was it 80s, either way, it was a preEB 2 band.
The black one was 70's with tantulam caps and the natural was 82 with the same 2 band circuit still used today but in defo sounded better than a modern one to my ears, it was not strung through either so I think the pickups must be better or just aged nicely in the old ones?
10. I dont think the body wood makes much difference, it has been said that you can screw a MM pickup and a 3 EQ to a piece of floor board and as long as the pickup is in the right place for the bridge and scale length it will sound like a stingray, I think there is some truth in it. I was going to make a Rickenbacker joke about the sharp splintering edges but I shall resist
11. Ha don't go there! Lol
12. My 3 eq ones with a side jack dont fit on a stand without hitting the bass knob, for that reason alone the 2 eq wins
13. Cant beat a nice Lakland
14. Strung through body, epoxy preamp with tantalum caps rather than electrolytic, slab body, larger pickup magnets and a dollop of 70s magic
15. I have bit the bullet and screwed the schaller to the fingerboard, first screw snapped off on one side, pilot drill broke off in the opposite one, lol. Nothing a bit of countersink drill and ebony filler and sanding wont fix if it ever comes off but I cant see that anytime soon. Sounds pretty good on its own but better when blended with the piezo via the fishman, my bass is very feedback prone im certain of it now.
16. I still dont know how to rosin the bow properly!
17. No problem
18. People who had trouble with the early pre amps had a good service from stagg with most of them sent out a whole electronic unit with questions asked so hopefully they will look after you, at least you know what it is now, that's half the battle won
19. If agree with that mingsta, I don't think it's the alder either as I'd say that's about right for the two eq anyway, I love a two eq!
20.
Just to clear up to grammeFriday, As he seems to not really understand. "Life skills" when mentioned with my 11 year old sons education: is the application of the skills & knowladge, that he is being taught in school to normal life and practical situations. IE mathamatics for budgeting your financial incomings & outgoings, or even things like estimating a journey time. Basically showing children that their knowladge works together and overlaps into combined knowladge. Because my son is a very hands on kid, once "Life skills" were applied to his education he actually flourished. It's a very effective teaching tool that is refered to as "Life skills" by his school. In my day we were mainly shown everything in theory but never had it applied to useful situations, so we were left thinking......what the hell do we use this for? THe same as long drawn out boring music lessons where we were made to learn to play keyboard by a teacher who hated our guts & was well aware none of us wanted to be there, we always came out thinking that it was a massive waste of time for all involved. I dont think I've ever heard of any child learning how to tie shoelaces in classes.....Parents usually teach their kids that. Aruments and name calling seemed to be happening because people have given their opinion & others are getting up-tight.
All very knowledgeable stuff
21.
Huh? Are you by any chance referring to SbMM, or is there an EBMM range I don't know about? I thought SbMM were half price (and think they indeed are here in Norway, after the price for EBMM dropped considerably. Before, if memory serves that is, the SbMMs were one third of an EBMM).
Not quite so simple as that! Ebmm did a range about four years ago I think called the 251 or something, two eq only, no hard case, poplar body and less colour options to choose from they were around £1050 in the UK compared to £1300 for a regular two eq or £1400+ for a three eq. They may have only been available in the UK though, I'm not sure. I use an angled Jack on all my basses.
22. You are not making a fair price comparison, the two eq ones you have seen are from a slightly cheaper range using a poplar body, no case, limited colour choices. There is nothing wrong with them but the standard two eq with a case and a trans finish ash body will only be slightly cheaper. Two eq sounds best, 3 eq is easier to dial in when playing live other than that you can't go wrong IMO
23. I'd join another band before buying a 4x12
24.
Chris Lakin has made him a jazz in the same livery.
I can't see how you can have a signature model for a player that plays something else and doesn't really have a 'known' instrument in a specific colour? Anyone want a black Hank Marvin signature series Gibson Les Paul for example? Pointless Fender tat for the over 50's with spare cash to impress less informed friends, looks a nice bass but its easy enough to pick up a nice Jazz bass and I'd take a Lakland over a Fender anyway!
