It really isn't a business for most of us though, and this is a thread about pub gigs after all. Even if you got £100 a night each, and that has got to be so rare in a pub you've bought £10,000 of stuff between you and worked from loading at 6.00pm to unloading at 2.00am spent £20 between you on fuel, not to mention the rehearsal and practice time. I doubt we ever earn the minimum wage calculated as an hourly rate. Most of us just make decisions based upon simple practical expediency plus a big nod to the type of music we want to play, money rarely comes into it, though it is nice to get something. I've no problem with the solo musician with backing tracks or the many who deliberately decide to go out as a duo or trio just to make it pay a little, or at the other end the function band who go out with brass sections and the juke box set. Everyone's got to make their own decisions and try to make it work. I've seen great trios and great function bands as well as those who probably aren't putting enough in. It's hard enough playing the pubs without other musicians looking down their noses. If you entertain audiences and enjoy what you are doing then good luck to you.
Great post IMO, in reality if I change both sets of strings on my EUB and DB thats 4 gigs with a £75 cut from each one, hardly going to make a living from it am I? If I had more gigs I would just buy more basses, I go to work to pay my bills

I have never once given any thought to the number of members of a band as a punter? They are either good or they are not, in fact that is not fair sometimes they are good but not my cup of rosy that is all. Just because a band has a keys player and a singer that strums a bit of acoustic and some lights that does not make that band any easier to watch than a 3 piece that have covered all the bases IME. I play in a trio, the guitarist sings and the drummer does BVs. I play in a quartet with a lady singer doing 40% of main vocals, the drummer does 60% and the guitarist does BVs, visually the 4 piece looks like it would have the bigger sound but it does not. Nonsense totally IMO and IME, I have been in a band with keys and two guitarist blasting away many times before and we made a noise no worse or better but I got less money at the end of the night

Clayton lost love of his Lakland basses these days then? -
Yep but not a pre EB. They still carry a small premium over a later EBMM one but fetch less than a pre EB Ray, most of them were in that finish too probably came with a clear pickguard when new. I would rather it still had all its teeth though so I would factor in a refret off the final price.
MB1. DOH! It's been listed as a 5 It's a 4 Everything looks right for a 2 band Eq Pre Ernie Ball Possibly refinished body? However They've never made a Semi Fretless to my knowledge That's odd
It is not a pre EB, first two things to check are 1-slab body, all pre EB Rays had one all Ernie Ball ones had the body contours from the very first one. 2-Dot marker on the 21st fret no pre EBs had one and all Ernie ball ones do. As this has both and the trans logo rather than the left over pre EB neck logo it makes it no earlier than 1985, no rear decal pre 1987. The frets have just been pulled and filled.
-
Yep that is normal mate, pre EB rays were 3 bolt microtilt like Fender, then 4 bolt came in before they sold to Ernie Ball, 6 bolt neck and truss rod wheel adjusters came much later with the Stingray 5, It is a trans model probably 1986ish, it has the old logo but with ErnieBall on there too.

You are all clearly wrong! Two words, you can fill in the gaps for yourselves, Deacon Wembley
I'm not sure to be honest. We use goats because our guitarist actually breeds them, though I would imagine any reasonable sized animal or medium sized punter would do at a push.
Ive met quite a few guitarists that the term "goat shagger" would have been fitting for

Looks alright though
Those P.A weren't indoors and not at pubs, tho, I should have been clearer in what gigs they were for. Both Festivals with a 'professional' crew which makes the situation even worse. Both times, a few regulars said the sound wasn't as good as our usual sound and I said that that was largely beyond our control. Both times, the stage sound was pretty ok, so the problem was out front to the audience, I think. For pubs, we would run 2 tops and a sub which would be about 3k max, if we were ragging them, but I only run all cabs at 12 which is roughly half way up on the volume pots. I may balance the sub upwards a bit but I am just really looking for seperation and a bit of depth. I'll record most of the gigs with a Zoom h2 which is pretty forgiving and the recordings 'confirm' the better pub mix sound, IMO. What that says about the engr's of the pro outdoor rigs, I am not sure.
Id say that is the norm really, a small pub is no different to a pub full (or quite often empty) of people sitting in at a practice, our sound at practice is always good and balanced, once you venture away from that it goes downhill! I've seen numerous pro bands spend half of the gig giving hand signals to the sound crew trying to get the on stage mix right, red hot chili peppers sounded crap at knebworth for example but I bet they sound killer in their studio in LA
Best sound (volume balance wise) ever heard in a bar was electric drums and bass/guitar all straight into a pa after effects, no amps or loud acoustic drum equipment. Worked well for the disco/pop band in question
This is exactly what we do, Jo Becky drums that look like real ones and one of the tower pa systems that goes behind us, simple and effective for a pub gig.
-
You can go too far, 6k pa at its lowest levels with too many monitors is going to be hard to keep under control in the dog and duck ime, I've seen a pa over heat and cut out in a similar situation as the amps didn't like ticking over so low.
Does that mean that someone read this thread to you and then you dictated the reply? Same thing. If you have time to pick up the instrument, you have time to learn. In fact, you don't even need to pick up the instrument every time. Its not as hard as people think-I could have you reading basics in 15 minutes, and the rewards are great.
I can vouch for Doddy, I am not going to nick any reading gigs soon but Paul got me going and I have loved it ever since, then when I went to the DB it became a real bonus as TAB and DB dont appear to be found together very often which has opened up no end of material that is essential for upright really on the advice given by everyone in the DB/EUB section. My problem is that the theory side of things automatically starts to get looked at with reading so as you learn one thing and it creates two new questions!

I always wonder how many die hard passive bass only users connect directly (or via a wireless ) into an active preamp EQ section? If I put a stock Encore P bass into my Shuttlemax9.2 head I can boost all sorts of stuff and make it sound mega, get that bass home and plug it into a 15 watt combo and it sounds poop!
I agree. Just because I find them a bit boring after a while doesn't mean they are rubbish. They know how to sell. Write good riffs & keep the groove simple. I myself preferred Van Halen to ACDC as their basslines was equally as simple, but more fun to play when learning.
I am against sales figures as a measure of quality anyway...Justin Beiber for example....but for their songs at that time I think simple was best and I suspect they would have sold less records with a jazzy bass line. Simple can be good and for the life of me I dont know why some simple lines are great and eveything by coldplay, snow patrol etc etc etc is so dull in comparison to Free or ACDC etc etc, there must be more to it than we give credit for? -

This is a master class of the rhythym section IMO and there is even a little bit of walking bass if you listen around 3.00, get Cliff going all Rufus Reid on us http://youtu.be/RGlpF9bimpo
