What's your favourite Stingray tone?
stingrayPete1977 replied to Funky Dunky's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd be surprised if that's the Stingray on Lover Boy and Tie Your Mother Down. Sounds a lot more like the P to me. I think Deacy's defining Stingray moment is Mustapha. Aleikum Salaam! http://youtu.be/Oq6OoPB5FIM I'm afraid I've only ever really enjoyed the 'ray sound when played with a pick and preferably drop-tuned - it's always sounded a bit too spanky for me when played fingerstyle (I can't stand that RATM tone). I like these: http://youtu.be/dl60yuTJXZg http://youtu.be/zf_oLG-GnpU
We can only speculate regarding studio stuff I guess although he uses a Ray live for all the songs I listed, montreal live 1981 features the Stingray a lot afaik for example, it is all in the fingers maybe?! -
Tell you what guys, not knocking anyone who doesn`t want to do charity gigs, but when you`ve raised money for Great Ormond St Hospital, and actually go there with the items you`ve bought, and see the looks on the kids/nurses faces, well to say it makes you feel you`ve done something worthwhile is a real understatement.
The thing is so many of these charities are just a cover for a money making business, where possible if rather give goods to the people concerned than money or items to sell for money, I'm pleased that fly Fisher made all that money at his gig but it worries me how much cash goes directly to those in need even if the event can be run for free and you have avoided the scam brewery etc, if that charity sends 5% of that to a good cause and the rest goes to "administrative costs" its a waste of my time to be honest, I'd rather now an elderly neighbours lawn or something. The money and cars the top brass at most charities get is a piss take, the idea of liberal hippy types taking enough to live on and cover costs (and quite right they should too) has become a bmw and a huge salary.
Well they certainly won't be buying our non-existent album The last charity gig we did raised just over £3k for a local community garden charity. It was a day long event that included sponsored bike rides around various courses all arriving back at their 'hq' (a very large house with ample grounds provided to them on a free lease for a couple of years) for an afternoon of free live music plus food stalls and a bar operated by volunteers. I sorted the PA and was on site for about 12 hours from set-up to break-down as well as playing a 45 minute set along with the other half dozen or so acts. Looks like I was stitched up like a kipper eh? Still, it was second year running so I guess I'll never learn.
Good on ya, and I won't stop you doing it next year but my band won't be on the bill unless they use a dep bass player. For the odd good gig it means I miss out I'm happy to dodge the countless sh*t ones, I'll still be doing the odd pub gig for £30 a head no doubt but that's not for free or charity. As these threads prove there is always plenty of bands happy to do them so its hardly like I'm responsible for the end of all fund raising gigs.

In this instance the punters are NOT happy fly Fisher, they don't want to pay for a ticket, that's their choice as its their club, if I'd known that in the first place for my self dignity I'd have happily let some one else do it. I've done my share for charities I do support and for some I don't over the years, I'm done unless it at least pays costs or flea breaks his arm
-
As I've said in my opening post this will be MY last charity one regardless of who or what it is aid of, what other people or bands do is up to them, this one in particular got my goat as the members don't even want to pay to get in which is the nail in the coffin strangely as I'd already decided this would be my last ever free gig before I knew that.
-
Any of the branded ones should be good, basslines, Seymour Duncan, Bartolini would probably be my choice, I'd get a John east preamp too.
-
I'd say you would prefer the streamliner over the shuttle if you like the orange sound, chalk and cheese between the two Genz amps really, but both are good just depends what you want, I actually prefer the fet only preamp in my shuttle 3.0 or the fet channel of shuttlemax head over the valve only pre of my 6.0, so what do I know?

Eub are a funny territory aren't they? The NS basses are much better built than a stagg and probably sound more like a DB but they look and feel less like one than a stagg, that can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you want from it, if some one wants to go to a full DB in the near future I still think the stagg is better but if you want something that plays easier and a bit more fretless bass feel wise yet sounds good the NS has it. The bsx looks and sounds great but I've not played one so I'd be interested how it feels in comparison with a real DB?
-
We need pictures!

As nice as the ns basses are I find them less like a double bass than a sorted stagg, that's fine in its own right as its not a double bass, as soon as I tried one I decided I needed a DB rather than a better quality eub for me personally, all those finger board markings confuse the hell out of me! Now the Yamaha silent bass on the other hand.....

Im sure there are better ones, krivo looks good too, but for £70 im happy with it. Tried blending the piezo in with it today at practice but the piezo output is too weak to go into the aux in via the fishman, im thinking of making a special double lead with two jack plugs on each end, one schaller and one for the bassmax, bassmax via the fishman then send both via a behringer ab100 pedal to blend them to the right levels. I can either just unplug that from the normal input on my amp when using elec bass or put it into the pa mixer as we use one of those pa systems that goes behind us backed up with mackie tops for larger gigs.

Best of luck from me, 8 years and counting here, it aint easy but its worth it for the cost if nothing else!
Doing free gigs is not good or bad, it's rather a choice. So if you made the choice to do it than do it right. As an artist in a perfect world, money should not be mentioned. Unfortunately it's far from being that perfect so it's up to you to make decisions. Best
To be honest its the members wanting to come for free as they have paid a fee that pissed me off most, without the £5 tickets they can go for free but only to watch tv and play pool rather than see a band.
-
I don't agree, if your band is worth, for example, £150 for a gig, in my experience the band will be treated badly and the charity will not see the £150.00. Better by far to do a regular gig for £150 and donate the money to the charity of your choice.
We are not organising the event though are we, if we were then that would be easier I agree, the principal is rather than pay the band pay a fiver into the pot, we are doing our bit, the venue is expecting about 100 people so thats £500 in the pot without any extra donations or raffle prizes etc much more than the £150 raised the other way. Not an issue anyway as I say its my last
-
In my experience, a band is valued by what they charge, so a band that plays for nothing is considered to be worth nothing.
I hear you but the principal is what we are worth goes to charity, I would not play their club for free just because they want a band for the night for example, the idea here is lets say our little trio is worth £150 minimum so that goes to the guide dogs and we have a fun gig, but that wont work if the members dont want to pay for a ticket will it, its not like we will just be playing for free if there was no charity event is it?
-
I made a declaration earlier this year that I have done my share of free gigs now, dragging all the gear miles for an unappreciative audience purely because the organisers will throw anything they can get at the event if they can get it for free regardless of suitability, I appreciate they are doing the best they can though. I told the current trio I play with that it will be my last charity gig after the last freebie disaster and I wont be depping any free gigs from this day forth even if we will supposedly bag millions of weddings off it for the band and the regular bass player and me to share, let him do it. Just to help me confirm this I have just heard that the guys in my band did this gig last year as a full rock covers band, they said hardly anyone turned up because its a private members club they said they should not have to pay to get in to any event, £5 for a live band and a buffet with donations to guide dogs. So we are taking thousands of pounds worth of gear and setting it all up, playing probably two hours to entertain them while someone else feeds them all for free, I'd rather just put a tenner of my own cash into a guide dogs collection tin and have a night in than have the piss taken out of us. If they dont want it thats fine, its their club but seriously whats the point? We have sold lots of tickets to mates so it will be a good fun gig regardless but defo my last one for charity.
I also love Paul Denmans sound!!! I really like the sound of Louis Johnsons bass on MJ's 'Off the wall' album, it's so nice!!! I had quite a few emails about how I customised my stingray after I was featured in Notreble magazine playing it. (You can see/hear the artical here) http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2014/08/19/jimmi-clarke-teen-town/ So I made a video to talk through what I have changed on the bass. Stingray purists will hate me!!! But I really love the MM stingray. http://youtu.be/tS-tpgPFUpI
I like it, even though I always say the stingray tone is more about the pup and preamp rather than the neck, bridge and body somehow it does retain some stingray fizziness even on the front pickup with no active preamp. I like to see a bass being enjoyed -
Definitely made myself look a bit of a plum with the RATM comment...Definitely a modified pre-EB (no body contour), I just kind of assumed it was a transition one because of the era. Whoops! Bit pedantic but I'd still say Flea didn't debut with a Cutlass. He did use a pre-EB Stingray, but switched over to the Cutlass live to get away from the neck stability issues he was having, so I'd say he debuted with a Pre-EB Stingray! Agree about his Modulus sound, though my personal favourite is still the Higher Ground intro with a Spector NS-2! Word is that he did record Aeroplane with a Stingray however, possibly using the B/B/R EB Stingray that he was using live at the time. Excellent tone on that song, and great exposure on that solo! Cass was playing in a mate's band when I met him, at the Half Moon in Putney (band was called Asylum, unfortunately didn't last too long!...). He was playing a Cutlass at that gig, and when I asked him about it he said he started collecting them around the time of Stoosh as he had a bit more dosh. I think it's probably the case that he had only that one before, but started collecting more later, so sorry for confusing things on that one. The reason I mentioned the Stingray on P&S is because I asked him what he used to record Little Baby Swastika specifically, and he said "an old Stingray". Either he was calling his Cutlass a Stingray, or it's possible he actually used his transition Stingray (seen on the Weak video) to record just that song, or the whole album!...Don't know, but that's why I mentioned it! Anyway, apologies for storming in again with false information! Let's get on with celebrating the wonderful tone of the Stingray I would also cite Paul Denman and his lovely 'Ray tone with Sade!
Haha that makes sense then, thing is we can only take what someone else says they used on a record with a pinch of salt cant we, I forget what day it is never mind which bass I recorded certain things with, I have read many times that to get the killer Stuart Zender typical can only be a Warwick sound you use the pink 5 string Stingray he used for recording, lol As for flea, the Cutlass is in the 1984 album sleeve with live pictures from the very first gigs using it, its actually in cartoon form on the front cover, I know im sad -
I think you need an alnico pickup in the right spot and the right preamp, I doubt the wood and neck etc would make much difference.

Playing with your thumb (A bit like Sting)
stingrayPete1977 replied to police squad's topic in General Discussion
I've always done it for octaves as jtuk says, I do it for reggae numbers and country style too, a stingray with a mute bridge played with the thumb near the neck heel with the bass on full and treble switched off through a big stack is monstrous! -
