1. Moog Taurus 1 on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.u...em=231050460166 Not a bad price - looks in very good nick from the admittedly shaky pics.
 2. Yeah! They'll really make a difference. If I was in your position, assuming you'd be regularly rehearsing and gigging, I'd go for the Minitaur plus sturdy midi pedals option.
 3. We mostly rehearse in the music room of a nearby girls school where one of the guys is a music tech, another has his kids there. Which is great as it's free, has PA, drum kit and backline permanently set up, but we don't get much time each week so momentum is hard to build. We head to a local studio approx once a month to get a bit more done.
 4. I think you have to dial in everything, but here's a list of presets from Moog http://www.moogmusic.com/sites/default/files/MinitaurHardwarePresets_0.pdf There's no difference in setup times between T1 and T3, by the way. Before I got my T1, I used the Novation/midi pedals option. Analog synthesis is a bit of a dark art but you get the hang of it after a bit of twiddling, and I got a fairly good approximation of the classic Taurus sound (which is what you hear on Don't Stand So Close To Me, for example)
 5. They occasionally crop up on eBay for somewhere around £1.2k to £1.7k. Moog have stopped production so they're getting a bit rarer. Alternatives are: Moog Taurus 1 (which Sting used, you can see them on clips of the reunion tour), Moog Taurus 2, which were never as popular. Or get a set of midi pedals (eg Roland PK-5) and a bass synth like a Novation BassStation or the new Moog Minitaur, which is a Taurus in a box.
 6. I'm with New Moon, everything over £100 is specified separately - see http://www.newmooninsurance.com/musical/. I switched from musicguard as my cover exceeded some threshold of theirs that required extra security to an unreasonable degree for a normal domestic setup. Cheaper items are covered on the household insurance.
 7. When I stopped smoking I put the money I didn't spend on fags towards a new bass. After a year or so I got a Stingray fretless 3-band EQ in Burnt Apple.
 8. Enter Sandman, thanks to a copy of Guitar For The Practicing Musician I found in a nearby museum
 9. I see them now and again on the tube, but best to avoid rush hours. Some favour those cases you get with wheels on, which probably makes life easier. And there's a lift at most central stations these days as well. Having said that, and speaking as an electic bassist - in the topsy-turvy world of commuting with a bass, having a good solid piece of Fender or Rickenbacker in your hand is often useful.
 10.
No, they've only ever played as a three piece.
A passing pedant just told me that they were a four-piece for a while in early 1969 when Lindy Young joined the Lee/Lifeson/Rutsey line-up, Jeff Jones having been kicked out not long before in favour of Geddy. Then Geddy was kicked out for a while, and replaced by Joe Perna, and they changed the name of the band to Hadrian. Meanwhile, Geddy forms Ogilvie with Xavier Dangle** and Sammy Roher, and they soon change that band's name to Judd. Judd end up being a lot better than Hadrian, so Lindy Young jumps ship and joins Judd, and Hadrian break up. Judd also break up soon after, and Lee, Lifeson and Rutsey get back together as Rush, again joined by a 4th member, Mitchell Bossi on rhythm guitar. Bossi stays for two or three months then leaves, and Rush are again a three-piece. They change their name to the Originals, then the Regulars, the New Originals, then back to Rush. ** said pedant swears at this point he's not making it up
 11.
It was a seller called themadape. It was listed as free shipping worldwide. I also wanted a phase 90, so he combined postage and shipped both for free. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item43b73b485f
Thanks! Saved seller. There's a whole load of stuff there that I'll never need but you know hey free postage it's hard not to.
 12.
I've just ordered the MXR Bass Chorus Delux from ebay, USA free delivery at under £110 ;-)
Where did you order from? I got my exclusive courier service to bring one over (ie my folks were on holiday and I sent them on a shopping mission). Cost was a shade over £100. Great pedal btw.
 13.
Completely agree. Seconds Out was what drove me, as a poor student, to buy a proper hifi. My favourite album of all time.
Yeah. I've got the original Seconds Out vinyl and it sounds fantastic.
A friend of mine, as a party trick, plays the keyboard solo from Follow You, Follow Me on bass.
I used to be able to do that with the top line of the Firth of Fifth keyboard solo. My fingers aren't so bendy any more
 14.
Got a couple of BBT albums. Excellent stuff and yes there is a Genesis feel to them.
I met one of the BBT guys, Greg, in a bar in Prague after the 2007 Genesis show there. Lovely chap. Apparently BBT will be on the road some time early next year.
 15. Yeah JB is definitely on Over The Top, I've got it on vinyl downstairs. The opening "Theme 1" is killer. Pretty sure it doesn't have Bilbo's song on it though.
 16. Have you heard this version? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX-hN35AVCI
 17.
Now, back on topic: of the 3x3 EP, although Me & Virgil is good, I always loved You Might Recall. I don't know what it is, but something about the jangly sound and wierd-sounding chords just grabbed me.
Yep, this is one my little-known pleasures mentioned earlier. The drums have a lovely laid-back feel like Follow You Follow Me, great job by Rutherford on the jangles, good bassline too.
 18.
The bugger has never done any when I've seen him, but I know he's been working with Hackett. Cheers man.
I'm sure he's done Carpet Crawl as well, but can't find any setlists to remind me. In the meantime, check out this gem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRu-YnpCYGM
 19.
Ah, I've got a massive soft spot for Fading Lights. A whole song that just the three of them could play live, and the lyrics are so poignant. Lovely.
You're right - a lyrical high point for that era. And a blast to play as a three-piece. (The tribute band I used to play it with had a singer that didn't play drums, so he'd nip off for a quick half of mild with the guitarist for the instrumental)
 20.
Agreed. That album was curious, as there were a few hints of real Genesis spread through the album. E.g. Tell me Why is a god-awful song, but blessed with some lovely 12-string stuff; the first time a 12-string had appeared on a Genesis album for ages. Fading Lights and Driving the Last Spike had some hints of glory but ultimately fell short, and even No Son of Mine had some atmosphere. But that instrumental bit in Living Forever is a real highlight: it was as if they'd accidentally remembered how to be Genesis, but quickly stopped it, to get back to the excruciating mishmash that was the rest of the album.
Let's get back to the good stuff. Thanks to this thread, Genesis content on Spotify is getting a good workout from me today. Now playing, Dodo from Three Sides Live. Man it's powerful stuff.
 21.
On the subject of WCD, 'Driving the Last Spike' is a song that is good but should have been great. When that guitar-y instrumental kicks in, the song should have gone somewhere. But just as it gets exciting, it drops out again. So frustrating.
Agreed - same goes for Fading Lights. Play a bit faster Tone! No Son of Mine = Mama Lite; Jesus and I Can't Dance = cringe; tracks 5-11 just not Genesis.
 22.
He's just sung on a re-working of the whole of The Lamb! http://www.francisdunnery.com/music-2/
Cool! Thanks for the tip, I'll look out for it. Speaking of re-interpretations, look out for "Rewiring Genesis - A Tribute To The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", which is the album reworked end to end for synth-less band with strings, woodwind and brass. You can read the story behind the project on Nick De Virgilio's site, he ddrums and sings on it: http://www.ndvmusic.com/discography/ndv/rewiring-genesis. It's very good and delightfully mental. Check out the clip of Riding The Scree, brilliant.
 23.
I've never been into Genesis much, certainly very little familiarity with the music. I'm listening to Cinema Show now, and it feels like listening to It Bites, who I'm a huge fan of, and who I know were big into Genesis, especially Dunnery. I think you may have got me into Genesis and I shall download Seconds Out shortly. Cheers
Frank's solo set has often included Genesis material in his solo set. I've seen him do the intro to Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, among others (my memory fails me) Also he appears on Steve Hackett's recent "Genesis Revisited 2". He sings on Moonlit Knight again, and as well the last section of Supper's Ready ("As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs (Aching Men's Feet)")
