1.
Difficult to fiind anything online - I managed to pick up Vimana at the rekord shak in edinburgh about ten years ago. features percy jones on bass. there's a brief entry on wiki.. http://en.wikipedia....a_(Italian_band)
Yep, saw that, and the Collins/Pert connection which piqued my interest. There's an album Blink on Spotify, which is pretty good apart from the singing... which can get a bit OTT. Must be the opera influence.
 2. No idea, sounds great though. Any tips for where to start with Nova's back catalog?
 3.
Bassist of Godsticks is on here. Or he used to be, dont know how active he is now..... Dan Nelson. A fellow student of Jon Caulfield. Good lad and a great player. Ive seen them live and id say they are well worth a watch
Yeah, Dan's really good. And given he's playing music of that complexity and stepping in the shoes of Bryan Beller and looks about 17, I'm not jealous oh no.
 4.
There have been so many Primus spin-off projects that it's difficult to keep up, to be honest with you. ( Not that I want to keep up... ). It all sounds like music for an imaginary children's T.V show made by someone suffering from severe paranoid schizophrenia to me, to be honest with you.
It's as much a Phish and a Police spin-off as a Primus spin-off. I've copied it to my music machine today to see if they were a decade or so ahead of their time.
One thing that we British folks can be very proud of is prog rock. When you look at the horrific mess that the Yanks usually of that genre, you begin to realize what great bands Yes, Crimson, and Genesis et al were . Rush were great too ( crap nowadays , though ) , but they are part of the Commonwealth so we can claim most of the credit for them .
I wouldn't put UM in the same prog pigeonhole as these four bands, of which I am very fond - although three (Yes, Genesis, Rush) were great but haven't presented much since the early 80s that interests me any more. I'd say Invisible Touch and Union were a horrific mess as well. (Rush more a post-Counterparts plateau of mediocrity)
 5.
Just checked and I have Anchor Drops and Mantis. I think they were passed on to me as mp3's by a mate who knew I liked a bit of prog. Don't think I've listened to either for a year or two.
Do you use Spotify? There's a great selection of live material there - check out Live At The Murat or any of the "Hall Of Fame" collections (these are 'best ofs' that year's live recordings).
 6.
Oh , and I forgot to mention, Primus are rubbish, too.
Yeah I don't get them either. Have you heard Oysterhead? Now that was bad.
 7.
I have a couple of their albums floating around in my iTunes library but not listened to them for a year or two, maybe I shoul dload them on the ipod and give them another go. Wouldn't be able to get to any of the gigs anyway mind...
What've you got? Like other bands from their genre, their live output is where the meat of it is. Happy to make suggestions if required.
 8.
This music is brilliantly played, but bloody awful I'm afraid. Sounds like a hybrid of Dream Theater and Gentle Giant to me . Also, quite worryingly, there are shades of the Dave Mathews Band in there, too. Since the enforced absence of the Grateful Dead following Jerry Garcia's unfortunate demise nearly twenty years ago now, America has been searching for a substitute for that institution , or at least a way to indulge the same kind of notions of ...well, all kinds of things to do with a long-gone era that were mostly never really true even when they were current . All these "jam" bands and New Age prog rockers are trying to fill a void that should have been left as a void. To my sensibilities, this band's music is like an intricate sonic wallpaper that is so densely patterned that it cannot be taken in and properly comprehended for more than a few minutes at a time. In light of that short attention span , the great irony is the extended length of these pieces of music. Not my cup of tea then , but I am glad they are coming to the U.K and at least their their fans here will get a chance to see them in the flesh . Hope you enjoy the gig.
Thanks! I'm a big fan of DMB, and quite partial to early Dream Theater and Gentle Giant lurk in that grey area of "bands your music pals say you should like given everything else you listen to". So I think I'll be ok. The band you're looking for by the way is Phish. You know Phil Lesh is playing here soon, by the way?
 9. American prog-jam band Umphrey's McGee are playing at the Brooklyn Bowl somewhere in the O2 Dome this week - three shows, Thursday-Friday. Support comes from two brilliant UK bands, Godsticks (Thursday) and Syd Arthur (Friday, Saturday). Umphreys's are busy headlining festivals in the USA and have just announced their epic five night New Year's run which will sell out in milliseconds. Much like other bands from the same genre, they're unknown here - and tickets for their Brooklyn Bowl run have just been reduced to a two-for-one offer for all three nights - https://tickets.axs....tent=Secret+Gig Here's a couple of clips of songs that got me into the band:
 10. "When live, play at the high end of the neck on the heavier strings, unless you're using a compressor, this will be noticeably louder, and lean back while you're at it" I need to work on my leaning back.
 11.
It's those square fifty watt things that make those horrible squealing noises
Oh one of those, terrible things, shouldn't be allowed.
 12.
That's just rubbing it in! The thing I noticed more than anything was the fun they seemed to be having, which I suspect came from knowing they were well rehearsed and it wasn't a chore, which the first date of a 60 date tour would have been I would imagine. Also, interesting that they also stood so close to each other, with loads of eye contact, unlike a 'stadium' band these days, where they can be 40 yards apart, and if in the round, not even facing one another. Proper old school.
Hah - great minds think alike: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/186689-led-zeppelin-reunion-concert-movie-premiere/page__view__findpost__p__1840321
 13.
Perhaps time to dig out your copy and have another watch?
Thanks for ahem planting the suggestion, I've now got Celebration Day lined up for a listen today. Hard to believe that the gig will be 7 years old in December - I was there, and have brilliant memories of the day.
 14. And the Lets Go Crazy from Manchester... Bass solo approx 2m23s.
 15.
I would have loved to have seen these. What were the band like? I like the idea of a more stripped back band as a change from his previous bands.
Really good! I've seen Prince before twice, once at the O2 in 2007 during his month's tenure there, and having consulted the history books the other time was 1988 at Wembley for a Lovesexy gig, of course I was very young then. The band was Prince on guitar and occasional keys, then the three-piece 3rd Eye Girl on guitar, bass and drums, and another keyboard player for most of the gig. Also, another keys player was clearly visible in the sound/lights desk area for the closing numbers. My favourite numbers were U Got The Look, Kiss, Sign O' The Times, Hot Thing, 1999 and some of the instrumental jams (it's a bit of a blur tbh). A criticism I've had of previous gigs is that he's likely to do just a verse and chorus of a "hit", then segue into the next song. Much less of this at the Roundhouse, in fact the only time it happened and was jarringly obvious was When Doves Cry into Sign O The Times. In fact the wife said "huh? It's all gone a bit Jive Bunny" at this point. The bassist Ida Neilsen was just right for the band, and played the old material just right, I'm not familiar with the new stuff so can't comment. The instrumental jams later in the set were really cool, especially compared to similar at the O2 gigs which lacked dynamics and went on a bit. The opening number Let's Go Crazy was slowed down to a bluesy jam, and she did a great solo with some lovely barmy effects going on. She's also known as Bassida and Ida Funkhouser, so google around for more info. Here she is doing a demo for TC Electronics.
 16.
Cool. How about emailing them today to let them know to wait in their car until the previous guy has left? Is that reasonable?
Yeah that's fine. Also, maybe post a week ago so you've got time to sort all this out. Otherwise, good luck with it!
 17. I'd put in a contingency between each guitarist to send one off before the next one arrives. Then you get a little discussion/note taking/sobbing time between each, and less chance for awkward "oh hi yeah just wait a sec while the previous guy packs up" moments.
 18. Brilliant show last night. Setlist here: http://www.princevault.com/index.php/04_June,_2014-2 (and the earlier show, http://www.princevault.com/index.php/04_June,_2014-1).
 19. I'm in for the 9.30pm show. It'll be interesting to see if the teatime show finishes on time and they get everyone out... Just seen this: https://twitter.com/TomWhitwell/status/474235221014245377/photo/1 - it looks like the queue for the first show is heading down Chalk Farm Rd and into Morrison's petrol station
 20.
It varies from tree to tree
Maybe he should go to a different branch
 21. Two shows tomorrow night at the Roundhouse: http://www.roundhouse.org.uk/whats-on/2014/prince-and-3rd-eye-girl/
 22.
Not everyone has Excel. 1. I don't have any use for spreadsheet software therefore I don't have it 2. It costs money. If someone else wants me to use it then they'll need to buy me a copy.
Open Office is free and compatible, and is what I use at home.
 23.
Only works if everyone has a copy of Excel though.
Yeah, true. Like a Google Calendar only works for people with web browsers I suppose.
