1.
good man toneknob. I understand the views that Metallica will 'own' a huge piece of Jaco rightly or wrongly, but Metallica are not business mogul monsters anymore. That time has passed , these days they are good guys and family men, I'm sure Rob (who has been a huge Jaco fan for years) will give this project the respect it deserves and with any luck it won't just be bass players that like it, the masses will catch on as well. I am very interested even though I'm not a big Jaco fan and will definately buy the DVD
I don't know about the business intent of Metallica, but RT's enthusiasm and long-term respect and admiration for JP is obvious from the youtube clips I've seen relating to the project. Teamed with the producers behind Sugarman, I've got high hopes.
2. +1 for mids. Here's some bloke cutting through nicely with his overly-loud bandmates down the Albert Pub. Check out the upside-down smiley EQ.If it was me (sorry Jack) I'd skew it slightly towards the bass, with the peak around 300-400Hz, but that's personal preference (and I don't know the EQ bands on a Hartke either) ps. welcome to basschat!
3. The trailer lists/shows a few names: Johnny Pastorius, Flea, Bootsy Collins, Geddy Lee, Santana, Ian Hunter, Nathan Watts, Peter Erskine, Wayne Shorter, Sting, Herbie Hancock. I'm really looking forward to it - and have stumped up a wedge for the pledge.
4. Am I alone in not being able to read through any PledgeMusic campaign without this popping up? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Dy2fo6E_pI
5. either way it's all witchcaft
6. Not a hologram exactly, but on Strictly Come Dancing's results show last night (the missus was watching and I just happened to be in the room ok *ahem*), Barry Manilow did a "duet" with Louis Armstrong on "What A Wonderful World". Which was creepy enough ... and it brought back to mind Pat Metheny's thoughts on Kenny G doing the same, see http://www.jazzoasis.com/methenyonkennyg.htm (which can be tempered slightly with PM's own follow-up at http://www.jazzguitar.com/features/kennyg2.html)
7. BBC Four are showing this Jack bruce documentary tonight: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01c6hw2 I think it's been on before, if so it's well worth a watch.
8. Ology by Living Colour/Muzz Skillings (specifically the melody from 0m34s onwards). I have the tab somewhere and a general feeling of "must get around to learning it one day"
9. So I went in Wunjo yesterday to see if they had any TB-10's in stock. "The website's a bit out of date, sorry to say" he said. "We sold the TB-10 a few months ago. Turns out it was the guy from Kate Bush's band".
10. TNK from "801 - Live", with Bill MacCormick (also of Quiet Sun and Matching Mole) on bass. This version is a bit woolly in the bottom, check out the remastered version if you like it (here it is on spotify Phil Manzanera – TNK (Tomorrow Never Knows) - Live)
11.
I am hearing Gong music for the first time right now. I am really impressed with Mike Howlett.
He's great. You know about http://gongband.info/event/londonhighbur-uk/ right?
12. Don't forget your cranberries! For anyone else who's looking... https://www.dropbox....SOY6P_xE-a?dl=0
13. The first song I learned all the way through was Enter Sandman. No going wrong there.
14. A bass bash virgin nearby asks: what happens at these things anyway? apart from drinking.
15. Stuff about it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-29896600 and clips here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04n62k3 (as well as listen again)
16. And certainly in the topsy turvy world of public transport, having a good solid piece of Fender in your hands is quite often useful
17.
but those who would have to drive or - God forbid - tube it from the other end of town might prefer to give it a miss.
huh? Taking your bass on the tube is easy, I go to rehearsals and gigs with my bass and all the pedals and cables I need using whatever public transport is best. I've not had a car in London for years, don't need it. Of course it's a different story with an amp, but how many of those are needed?
18. +1 for TLev. I take along this CD, specifically 0m21s to 0m37s of this song, when I'm trying out new hifi gear. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfbdBZO9td0
19. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6f6BOKXXxg ffwd to 3m28s for the bass solo, delightful until some horn player bloke comes in over the top of it
20. Done! Also, it'd be good if some of those 15000+ signers to date became regulars of the 12 Bar and surrounding music shops. I wonder how many are?
21.
Love the bit at 1:25:15............ I wasn't sure whether he was going to play it or ride it.
Someone built some keys into TLev's tash?
22. Show your love for Steve Hackett and the music: I've got a spare ticket for Steve's Hammersmith show tomorrow if anyone's interested. Middle of the front stalls, row D! Yours for £40. PM me or drop me a line at [email protected].
23.
Oh look, the Takamine website is listing Wunjo as a stockist.....
*gulp* a fiver's change from £2k.
24.
he also used a Takamine TB10, wearing it with a guitar strap instead of using its endpin to stand upright.
Thanks! This is the one I've been trying to identify since several hundred posts ago. No amount of googling "john giblin" "kate bush" "acoustic bass" etc helped. Oh look, the Takamine website is listing Wunjo as a stockist.....
25. Really sad news - another of my "without whom" team moved on.
