1. I see your point, i don't think i'm going to blow the speaker because i'm always hearing for speaker flap/distortion and never pass my master over 12 o'clock, none of my cabs can handle the shuttle's power (i know... i need a S12T in vintage cloth... i'm saving for one ) but they handle fine for the volume i play. It's just a little unconfortable to be playing and see that damm thing lighting... i'm always affraid that this time it will enter in protection mid song...
2.
This comes up quite a lot, I'd certainly want one. I want this one.
Oh! That looks so good! No DI though...
3. Hello, i'm just wondering if there's any good quality (neo if possible) 10" 4Ohm drivers on the market. I have a Promethean extension cabinet that i'm selling localy but no one seems to feel any love for it so i've thought about keeping it for small venues. The thing is that i have a Shuttle head and they tend to lid the limiter/clip LED (at the power stage) quite soon when presented with a 8Ohm load, with a 4Ohm load they run without clipping. It's not just my unit, a couple of friends have Shuttles and they noticed the same thing with theirs. So what options do i have here? I'm not worry about putting too much power on the cab because my ears still function well and if i use this cab it will be for quieter gigs so it won't be pushed very hard, just enough to hear over the drummer and that's when the LED starts to lid... I've thought about a dummy load but i don't know how to do it - any links are appreciated, i know my way around the soldering iron - and i don't know if it would create heat issues, other alternative is to change the driver but i can't find a decent 4Ohm one with 250-300W handling. What would you do? Idealy i would like to keep the one cab situation for the small venues and rehearsals (yes, my drummer is that quiet!) and not have to lug the 2x112's everywere. I know Eden does a 4Ohm 1x10", anybody knows what driver are they using? I'm not really worried about the clipping, i've read Jeff's comments on this somewere and he said that it was perfectly safe for the amp to operate while limiting but i would get a bit more peace of mind if i knew i wasn't pushing the amp too hard. Cheers Marco
4. The Amplite looks really good. If it had a Balanced DI out instead of that XLR input and JACK through on the back it would be on my GAS list as #1!!! Well... nothing is perfect! I can see a market niche over here for BC'er who knows his way around electronics though...
5. Yep, it's possible. The cab i owned was buildt around 2009/10, before the Neo crisis...
6. Humm... i doubt the driver was changed... the previous owner was a BC member so he must definetly be an honest person! I'd rather believe that the driver used has somehow the same roots as the 3012 or that it could have been based on it's development...
7. Exactly Alex and having had both in my hands i can confirm that the GB driver was heavier. I'm lacking of english vocabulary to discuss this so i´m posting the pics so everybody can see the diferences on the frames and magnets: You can see the diferences in their shapes. The 3012 has a lower and larger profile, bigger "magnet" and four points to attach the wire connectors as the 2512 only has two. there's also a clear difference in the place where each arm of the frame makes the angle (sorry for this non-technical description). I can guarantee that i've compared both my drivers with this pics and can safely say that the GB has the 3012ho (i'm not showing the lf pics but there's also diferences like the ones i've refered) based driver and the rumble has a 2512 based driver. I say "based" because there is in fact diferences between both drives i've owned/own and the eminence pics, these diferences are in the cones (the number of "waves" the cone has near it's larger side, where it's glued to the frame - again very techy speech! and the spiders aren't also exactly similars). Both my drivers didn't had the eminence logo sticker on the magnet! Sorry for the thread derrailing!
8. Bill, if Jeff is using a 2512 based driver they must be very diferent from the stock ones because the frame and magnet are the same as the 3012HO, can´t tell more about the cones from the picture obviously. The stated 300W always seemed very conservative in my opinion, those cabs put out a lot of sound for theyr size. I sold mine to a friend who's now using two STL-12T's under a Shuttle 9.0 and that rig goes very loud! Not much low-end but enough to fill the soud. Once again, my opinion on the Rumble drivers was based on the stock driver pictures and mine has the frame and magnet of the 2512's. I believe you may have a far better insight on this subject so any more info is always appreciated!
9. MK1 means it's the firs version of the pedal, also known as GR1. It has been descontinued, now Spencer does the GR2, it's basicly the same pedal with a couple of mods (dry blend and internal true/bufferered bypass switch plus some more tweaks).
10.
+1. Not even close. Very few manufacturers are using 3012 based drivers. AFAIK only Barefaced, AudioKinesis and Baer do.
I'm almost certain that Genz Benz uses the 3012, i'm pretty much sure that's what came in my former STL-12T. I once took the speaker out and compared it to Eminence's products and it was an exact lookalike to the 3012. In the same way i believe that my current Rumbles are Deltalite 2512 loaded.
11. Yep, Pitchblack, that's why you can't see it!
12. My current setup: Signal chain from right to left!
13. You need to take the head appart from the enclosure and look at the back of the pot, there should be printed it's value but i would bet in something like a linear 500k pot (b500k). It's very easy to replacee if you know a bit about soldering, just cut the three connectors of the pot with a small cutter and with the soldering iron remove the bits soldered to the pcb, then solder the new pot. You should see what size is the existing pot and the shaft type (most likely split shaft) so that you buy an exact replacement. If you had any doubts with anything i've written appart from my english spelling then you would be better off taking it to a local repair shop and get them to do the job for you. If you really want an exact Trace replacement here's a good place to find all the bits: http://www.britishaudioservice.com/parts.php?mfg=1&cat=14 Mind it's a US site, someone here could point you to a UK one! Cheers
14. Try both situations and go with the one you get best results. Since you're not using a cab you won't be fiddling with the amp's EQ on stage (you'll be monitored and that's gonna be controled by the soundman aswell) so there's no reason why the sound guy should have troubles with you. Just try it, take a screwdriver with you for your next gig, takl to the sound man and make the experiment with Pre and Post EQ DI. Cheers
15.
You'll feel air flow more with the front port location, but that's not the same as hearing more bass. As noted port radiation is omni-directional, the actual dB level is identical no matter where it's placed. You can get some interactions with a rear port and a rear wall, but those tend to be easy to fix, just pull the cab out another inch or two. If anything putting the cab a bit too close to the wall will reduce boom, not increase it, as it lowers the cab tuning frequency. Putting it tight to the wall can upset things, but again it's an easy fix, don't put it tight to the wall. As to why they're sometimes placed on the rear, usually because the cab size is too small to fit them on the front.
Thanks Bill, like i said, i trurst those opinions to be true. I just stated my findings. I had a Genz Benz SLT12T (3012HO loaded) with a rear port and now i have a couple of Fender Rumble 112 (deltalite 2512 loaded) with a front port. The Genz sounded very thin when standing on front of it but behind (in front of the ports) you could hear all the bass comming out, that upsetted my drummer and the bass was getting into the drum mics. with the Fender i lost output power (less sensitive drivers) but gained a bit of bass in my sound when playing in front of the cab. The "against the wall" thing can't be a constant for me due to the different stages we play in. Sometimes i can't leave the cabinet near a wall to benifit from the reflex, in some places i had to play with my rig on my side, facing me (and before you ask we use PA and my rig is only for monitoring me and my drummer)... You're right about me feeling the air flow, that's what i like to feel from my bass rig (probably influenced by my previous TE 210+115 front-ported rig - great amounts of trouser and shirt flapping but heavy as hell! ) so for me it's front-ported all the way! Thanks for clearing the tech part of this question, cheers!
16. I trust the opinions given above but i had rear and front ported cabs and i feel more bass if i'm using a front ported cab. The front port also helps the drum mics not to capture much of the bass... this is from my experience. If you place a rear ported cab next to a wall you'll get a bit more of the bass reflex but that just made my drummer complaint that he coudn't hear a defined bass sound, just boom...
17. Are you sure it's not your strings dying?
18. Bought a pedal from Mike. A real nice guy, fast replys to PMs and very fast and well packed shipping. I can reccomend this gentleman anytime! Thanks Mike, it was a real pleasure! Cheers
19. I bought a pedal from Ivan. Great communication and fast reply to my PM's. Pedal payed in one day and shipped early next day. Absolutly bomb-proof packing (i think i wouldn't pack a bass that well!!!). A very honest and friendly BC'er, couldn't reccomend enough! Thanks Ivan, it's been a pleasure! Cheers
20. http://www.epifani.com/products/UL2_410.php If you want serious lows and still retain a good clean sound in a 4x10 (i would prefer a 2x12" solution due to the phase problems with 410 design) this is the one i would go for! I've heard the 210 and it has some heavy low end going there so i would imagine that the 410 will have even more!
21. Having recieved the new cab and stacked them i'm beginning to feel that the tilt wont be that needed... probably just a small bit of hardcase foam to tilt the upper cab very slightly will be needed. I'll know more after my next gig (dec 3rd). (see pic on the Fender Rumble 112 topic!)
22. My second it's here: It makes a nice looking rig, but i'm waiting for some silver grill cloth (fender vintage) to give it a proper look!
23. I can't recommend enough the 3Leaf Audio Groove Regulator. The best i've heard ever! I'm changing mine now for the 3Leaf Audio Proton just because i don't need that many knobs on a pedal - i like to set-and-forget - but i hope i can retain the same great sound!
24. That's a fair point! In my case the top cab will in fact benefit from the tilt because we're talking about very small cabs, the new Fender cabs aren't much bigger than the Promethean's (only a couple inches in deference). My new rig will be about 1.20 metres high therefore still under my hearing level. I've also tried to reach Ibanez customer service but i can't find a direct contact to them, the site links me to their closest retailer (in Spain!). Has anyone dealt with Ibby directly in the past and can provide me a contact? Cheers
25.
Anyone who knows me will tell you I've owned a lot of gear in my short time as a bassist. At the peak of my gear madness, I used to take nearly £5,000 worth of gear on stage - nearly half of which was attributable to my 'rig'. Tonight I rehearsed with my band with an old (but new to me) Trace Elliott 200 watt 1x15 combo with a 1x15 Trace extension cab underneath - it cost me £350 in total and dya know what, it sounded immense. It rattled my cheeks and brought the biggest smile to my face ever. Just had to share that with ya.
Remember that that rig costed close to £2K new! That's not exactly what you could call a cheap rig! But i understand your point and agree with you, sometimes we spend a lot of money in gear and the improvement in sound is not always that noticeable!
