1. Every time I see this thread come up, I wiz to the end to see the pictures of your new bass. Let Jon know this is affecting all of us now. Can you PM me with a picture when it arrives I can't take the suspense any longer
2. Just thinking it was this very situation, the electric bass got invented, out of necessity. That’s not meant as a flippant remark just on reflection, but thanks to advances in amplification you will probably sort it and be able to project some nice acoustic bass out to the masses
3. I think it is best to take a section at a time, break it down may be a phrase or even a bar or two. Use a metronome just to ensure you are dividing up the tied and dotted notes correctly. If you start reading it wrong your brain will keep throwing in the wrong phrase later. So learn it right slowly then speed it up. Always good to have a few lessons to keep you on track, this does not have to be a bass player it could be a piano teacher a brass player just a good reader to start with. I had an issue for a while about the best place on the neck to start the piece. This comes with experience but found an ex pro, to reassure me. This does mean the dusty end has to come into play. Reading dots and flying up and down the neck back to your comfort zone = bum notes. So anchor your hand over the key centre of the piece. Say Eb where you would play that scale, and you will find most of what you need under your hand, but you won't if you start at the first fret. That’s my tip of the day, look at the key and the range of notes in the piece first. Always look over it to check where the repeats key changes, and signs and coda is etc.

5. Thanks guys, I'm gunna let the new strings bed in and my neck tweeks time to work, and see how she goes, I got the action down last night and it already sounds better.
6.
I heard 'silly love songs' by wings / McCartney and thought I could have a go at that
One of his best,
7. Hi Guys, there seems to be a few with ESP knowledge on this thread Doctor J/ Linus. Can you take a gander at my recent acquisition, give me your thoughts. I know nothing about these basses but it looked good and I wanted a Sunburst precision project. Without paying silly Fender money. Although any of you watching the evil Bay last week will see I took a bit of a flyer on this. My main observations from other early ESB bass photos is that this has no skunk stripe or teardrop trust rod wood plug on the front headstock, the neck is also reasonably flamed not seen on others. It is also very obviously a Tele head on a later P body, was this trying to be a crossover bass between the early and later p designs. I'm planning on a Gotoh bridge, a set of wizards and possibly a tonestyler tone pot.
8.
Just want to let you guys know about a company that supplies grub screws. www.Modelfixings.com in Nottingham My issue was I found that one saddle on my Schack bridge had a damaged thread and the saddle would not sit at the height I wanted. This was due to the stock grub screw being too short and when fully adjusted was only held by the last couple of threads. These I believe got damaged by the bass falling over in its case face down. So the highest saddle gets the full wack. Anyway I have found these 8mm stainless steel M3 screws and now all my saddles are adjusted and the grub screws occupy the full thread. cost just £5 pounds for fifteen and an M3 key This picture is before replacement
9. Boogie oogie oogie - A Taste of Honey http://youtu.be/jGeKXD12sto well who could resist.
10. Just looking at your spec again, Wow It's gunna be worth that wait, I have the Delux East pre on my shuker and it is the Dogs. I Use the passive knob to roll off all the time for retro P sounds and for jazz, Its the best tool in so many situations.
11. Thats got me thinking, I should treat myself more often. mmmmmmmm Enjoy
12. He is only 21 and yep he can dance and play. bugger http://youtu.be/p17W7vRgcf0
13. I'll be getting the album on the strength of that. I've never heard a bass mixed that well at a rushed live event, across the whole register of the bass. ??? His mum must have been on the desk. Or could they, no not on the Beeb
14. Worth experimenting with different foams, some of the packing foam that comes in parcels, is plastic they tend to kill the sound, I found a very good foam out of an instrument carry case where you pull out sections of foam to fit, this allowed the strings to vibrate enough and damped them slowly. Another was a rubber cabinet door edging rubber strip. So keep experimenting to get the sound you want. Also alter the amount of foam so there is not too much pressure on the strings.
15. Interesting comments Guys, I try to faithfully learn the line on the record, but as many have stated which version, it is important the band is given the same version to learn and not just head off to YouTube. Last couple of songs we learned GaGa. You and I, played on UK Radio is the Mark Taylor version with a semi country guitar riff. This was difficult to find. But was what everyone was hearing. Maroon five's move like Jagger we did the YouTube (live at the Voice 2011) version; it was a cleaner less synth based version and easier to establish your parts. Band Line up. We changed from 5 to 4 pieces about 10 years ago, so with no keyboard I had to re evaluate my contribution to each song, the Guitarist also. Not every song but I did start to listen as a punter, where was the energy focus, that may mean me doing a mundane repetitive phrase, and not put in the sexy bass riff, and the guitarist may have to learn the clean sax break, than use his new fuzz pedal. But yep I will listen to the bass player all night and not dance too. That’s what we do

18. I bought a MEY adjustable stool from Thomann for the wife when she broke her foot, she had to sing and do a Jessie J it was about £120. but now its mine and is great.
19. Slightly left field, but I installed the bass version on my passive schack and really loved the result; their new 3 pos switch must be another useful addition that may come close to what you are after worth checking if they can do the onboard version with the switch. http://www.stellartone.com/Page.asp?NavID=273
20. From your last post above, you are admitting the set list is a compromise. You have also made it clear your concerns and what you are up against to impress. So my advice is to not go out with a mishmash of songs just because you know them but to choose songs that hit the target audience in your local band venues. Shock and awe is the order of the day here, if you rehearse hard and nail the numbers and own them you could play anything. Obscure punk numbers , some Ska, Pretenders, Corgi’s, Blondie throw in some Metal album tracks and one C&W that should floor um. Conviction is the key; don't copy the rival bands in your patch aim to kick them into touch.
21. Thinking about getting a Mini TC tuner Anyone know if they Do take a battery or are they just for pedal board powered supplies Any Comments welcome TC site does not say either way
22. Can't add much more. But my own observation when trying to play his lines, was how many open strings he used, this enabled him to play his trademark boiling, bubbling bass phrases at speed. So it seemed to me he brought all his upright bass techniques into play. As I have approached the bass avoiding open notes as much as possible I found this really difficult. So my suggestion is to explore how much his upright bass playing defined his Motown contribution
23. You need a 4 x 10 and kick one of the cones in, should sound just like him. Well thats what the man said.
24.
I did once, just outside of Filey. My mum made me go outside to play.
wasn't you with the football as well was it ?
