1.
If you hadn't excluded Ibanez I would have thoroughly recommended a second hand SR505 or 605, which you'd just about get within your price range..
Or an SR305 brand new for £299 Plus the 'root beer' finish is pretty darn cool!
  2.
I'm beginning to feel that I should buy British stuff. I have an Ashdown head and a Barefaced cab - both of which I am really pleased with. What are my options for actual bass guitars? I can think of:

Status
Shuker
GB ?
I guess there must be more?
Missing a really obvious one here - Overwater!
  3.
As I stated somewhere before, I definitely have a MiM Fender 60s Jazz bass non road worn in nitro, sunburst, came with a hardshell tweed case, new about 4 or 5 weeks ago. Lovely instrument, sounds and feels better than my 2008 US standard J. Quite a rare beast at the moment, though, I just struck lucky.
This is correct. We've got the '60s Classic series jazz bass (with the nitro finish) hanging on the wall in our shop They do the black '50s classic series precision bass in nitro now too.
  4. Watch Wooten's Groove Workshop DVD, specifically the bit about beat placement. When he places the note to play a semi quaver in front of the beat, you get that feel, so start there and play around with it. Try placing your notes on the dotted semi quaver after the beat, that's a good one and so on. Just change it up until you find a placement that sounds right to you as your 'behind (or in front!) of the beat and then use it as a reference for future grooves!
  5.
Got mine today. Purdy!
Unbelievable!! A rickenbacker photo on Basschat Seriously though, the Squier is stunning.
  6. Yeah I posted some links to some models in the other thread. So many new models its hard to post them all. Some great stuff though. Exciting times for beginner bass players and guitarists with some many options to pick from.
  7.
Glad you've fixed the problem! But pretty worrying that 3 out of 3 arrived with issues, especially on a premium series. Personally, I wouldn't have been able to fix the problem on the third (totally useless!) so that would have been a write off for me as well. As I said before, I hope this doesn't signal a decline in the build quality and QC at Ibanez.
I find it unlikely. I genuinely believe that Andrea is simply unlucky. We have a VERY quick turnaround of Ibanez basses in our store. We regularly (ie weekly) have SR300, SR500, SR600 or SR1200 being bought in store and replaced with new stock and I honestly cant think of one that has turned up in an unsatisfactory condition. I reserve full judgement until my SR1605 has arrived as we've never had one in before but I'd hate the misfortune of one person's situation to reflect badly on such a great range of basses!
  8.
SR1605 arrived today Will return it tomorrow, it's too neck diving for me (just checked and poplar is nearly half the weight of ovangkol) and probably this is an explanation why a 1606 doesn't exist: a six strings will be too neck diving to be acceptable. And honestly the quality of the details is just acceptable I will order a 1205 instead.
Poplar is half the weight but that's why the body is made of mahogany, just like the sr1205. They just have differing top woods and I can't see the weight being much different to be honest. Also, you bought something blind from Thomann and wonder why it's in poor condition? Because they don't even open the box to see what's in it!! Buying from a retailer is always better if you want to see it first and know its right IMO! Plus, most retailers can offer fixes under warrantee (for example, fixing the wiring that likely came loose during shipping or Thomann's vast warehouse) rather than you shipping stuff back and forth in exchange for refunds and purchases. You also seem to have very bad luck. Hope you get it sorted.
This is great, I've flicked through all 12 to get an idea of the types of things he was doing. Nice to see that he's fixing bedroom studios rather than dedicated rooms. So now hmm, I'm thinking about my setup and how I can improve it. I'll start a thread about it I think. My main problem is that I probably can't get into the centre of the room so I'll have to see what I can do to work around this.
Yeah! He's got some great tips and its nice to see him doing it in a more everyday environment and not just setting up studios that would be beyond/irrelevant to most home recording setups.
  10. 'Vintageinvestments'... What are you investing in this? Hours and hours of regret?

    Studio rescue

Having stumbled across this series on YouTube, I thought I should share as there are some awesome insights and tips (and its actually a good watch at times!). I imagine some basschatters who are setting up home studios or wish to improve there studio might find it helpful! There are a number of episodes and his tips for using mirrors to work out where the acoustic materials should be positioned are great! Enjoy - http://youtu.be/02qpJt0hsL0
  12.
There's a Squier version of the Cabronita bass too: http://www.keymusic.com/en/product/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Cabronita-Precision-Bass-Black
Yup! There are so many new models, it's difficult to keep track lol. I totally forgot about the cabronita Squier bass!
  13. Here's the 5 string VM 70s jazz. Now available in Olympic white too. Just click the colour options on the left of the page to have a look - http://www.keymusic.com/en/product/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Jazz-Bass-V-Natural
  14.
Do these exist or is it a 'it'd be better if they did this...' Type post? If they exist - do you have a link?
Here you go 77 Jazz (Natural, pearloid inlays) - http://www.keymusic.com/en/product/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Jazz-Bass-77-Amber 77 Jazz (Sunburst, pearloid inlays) - http://www.keymusic.com/de/Produkt/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Jazz-Bass-77-3-Color-Sunburst 70s Jazz (Red, black inlays) - http://www.keymusic.com/en/product/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Jazz-Bass-70s-Candy-Apple-Red 70s Jazz (White, black inlays) - http://www.keymusic.com/en/product/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Jazz-Bass-70s-Olympic-White They are also releasing a 5 string jaguar bass and additional colours for the 5 string VM 70s Jazz and the precision (lake placid blue, from memory).
  15.
Do these exist or is it a 'it'd be better if they did this...' Type post? If they exist - do you have a link?
They exist. We got the details through from our Fender rep at work the other day. Here's the squier vm cabronita with bigsby - http://www.rockpalace.com/fr/produit/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Cabronita-Telecaster-With-Bigsby-Black From memory, the 70s VM jazz now comes in; Olympic white/Red/Natural (natural is previous model) with maple fingerboard & black block inlays/binding and the '77 jazz comes in natural/sunburst/black (black is previous model) with maple fingerboard & pearloid block inlays/binding. Ill try and find links for those now
  16. Good but the cabronita telecaster with lic. Bigsby and the range of new colours in the 70s and 77 VM Jazz basses trump these IMO.
  17. I don't really care what the FOH sounds like. I get my tone on stage which means I'm happy and play well because of it. The FOH sound might need certain elements adding/removing due to reasons with the venue or the other instruments etc and its the engineer's job to do that, not mine. I use a DI with a post/pre button, so if they want to hear 'my tone' as a reference, I can do that with ease and if not, they can do what they need to with the dry signal. I'm not a tone diva. I haven't got the time or energy for it lol.
  18. Once you buy MIJ, you'll never go back. US standards seem like such a bad deal in comparison.
  19. I've got a BWB on mine and its way cooler than white... Put some Fodera strings on it too. It's like a whole new monster now!
  20. Contacted bassgear via email today to see if they had stock of the Aguilar TH500 carry case. Despite being closed on Sundays, Barrie replied within minutes offering to reserve one for me so I get one when the next batch arrive. Truly fantastic service!
  21.
I usually check bc on my phone these days so I can't really listen to anyone's recordings. :-(
Plus one! I'm usually checking Basschat on my work commute and trying to navigate the forum with the patchy (at best!) 3G so recordings are a no-go for me.
  22.
And why should he do that exactly? Do you let the previous owner of your basses have them in their possession until you want/need them? Try swapping the word "bass" for anything else you own and see if you want to 'compromise' your rights and possession with a previous owner just because it was 'dear' to them. When the last owner of your car comes round, I assume you'll be allowing him 'fair' access to use it?
It's slightly different due to the emotional attachment. If the car you mentioned was the car of ayrton senna and his family wanted access to it, I'd be understanding as to why they had an attachment.
  23.
The bass does not belong to Jaco's family at all. It was Jaco's, it has been sold several times and is now owned by someone else. Trujillo was not 'paid' $1m for joining, it was an advance. He's not a full 25% partner in Metallica either. But more to the point - so what? It's his money, he gets to spend it on whatever he likes. Just because he's earned a bit of money lately does not mean there is any obligation on him to make a $60,000 gift to anyone. Anyone who thinks that he should just give it away is living in cookoo land.
I wasn't suggesting he gives it to them! But why buy it for $60k, then lock it away? Surely just let the pastorius family have it in their possession. That way, they could use it as a museum piece to raise finds to buy it back from Trujillo or simply have access to something that is dear to their family. Then if they don't stump up the cash, Trujillo takes it back when he wants/needs to! Surely that's a fair/sensible compromise?
  24. It troubles me that Trujillo has kept the bass, knowing it belongs to Jaco's family, knowing that Jaco's sons play bass and knowing that they tried to fight so hard for its return. If he really wanted to help, he should have returned the bass to the family IMO. He would still be part of the story but the bass would be with the family, not in Metallica's collection locked away from the world.
  25.
The "bass of doom" was bought by Rob Trujillo (of Metallica) as he wanted the Pastorius family to have it back. The owner of a guitar store in Manhattan had it, and wouldn't give it back to the family. So, Rob stepped in and did a magnificent thing. The guitar store in Manhattan is one which won't get any business from me anytime i'm in NYC.
Rumour has it that Trujillo bought it but refused to give it to the family, instead opting to keep it in his private collection whilst allowing the family access to it. Don't know if that's true, just a rumour I heard somewhere and I don't remember seeing Felix etc with it... Anyone have more info?
