1.
Or buy it in a haze of cheap red plonk...
Fizzy continental lager for me, but the same result.
2. Thanks guys! Absolutely delighted with this bass, thought it would be quite bright and aggressive sounding but it's actually really warm. Sadly it wasn't ready in time for the Statii meet, had a go on Moo's all graphite S2000 to get an idea what to expect!
3. Ok, last one now I promise! All graphite S2 classic, sounds really warm and plays fantastic!
4. We did this song a few times when it first came out in the early nineties. I never got round to working it out properly so I just used to tap totally random notes to try make the rest of the band laugh, the kind of audience we had usually found it funny too. I've got a video of it somewhere, must dig it out!
5. Wow, he's really going for it in this version! Was familiar with the Four Tops version but had never heard this one before, thanks for posting!
6. If you're fretting halfway between the frets you need a huge amount of pressure to stop the buzzing and you risk hurting yourself long term. So try to drop your fingers as close to the fret as possible (without actually muting the note right on top of the fret) and you'll find you need much less pressure to get a clean note. It'll also make life easier if you decide to play fretless in the future. Also a small amount of buzz is acceptable acoustically, but if you're getting much fret buzz through the amp then you need to clean up your technique. Good luck!
7. Looks like a 60s style Jazz but without the clay dots and with the wrong logo and scratchplate. Could be anything!
8. You might want to consider a G&L, they're great basses and really underrated and well within your budget: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT4AP58jC5o...feature=related http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/Tribu...asses/index.asp
9.
I couldn't bring myself to drill holes in my "beloved" so got these stick-on rubber pads from B&Q. Put 2 near the neck and 2 near the bridge (work great £1.99)
Assuming they stay stuck, that's a genius idea!
10. Tried a few Fenders last weekend, found a couple of reasonably good Mex '62 reissues, a couple of Mexs with seriously dodgy neck joints and pickup routs, some US Jazzes that were good but not special. And several Squiers that were all pretty good, they seem like great value for money.
11. Status do some, 4 and 5 string versions. Don't know if they'll change the tone of the bass though.
12. "The Complete Electric Bassist" by William Perry and Leon White was recommended in the reading thread in Theory and Technique. It's long out of print but I'm finding it one of the best books for learning to read, there are no shortcuts but a great way to get started.
13. DR Hi Beams when I want an edgy sound, plus they last a long time. Ernie Ball Slinkys when I want the tone of the bass to come through more, don't last so long but cheaper. Status Hotwires Groundwound on my phenlic boarded fretless and their Roundwound hexs to give my old Energy bass some extra ooomph. Rotosound flats on my old P bass funk machine, they went completely dead after 4 days - exactly what I wanted! Am looking for fairly bright groundwounds for my rosewood fingerboard fretless as the Hotwires are a little too dark sounding. I seem to be the only person in the world to have some earthing issues with coated strings.
14.
I bought the bass because it looked like my tie!, The "best" reason you've ever come-up with for buying yet
I once bought a P bass because it looked like my pants.
15. Don't make me start another forum negativity thread! (and no I'm not going)
16.
No they don't - just enlarge the access slot enough to allow an offset driver head in there.
They're '62 reissues so they don't have any access slots, but I learnt from Bernie Goodfellow at the London Bass Bash that I can loosen the neck bolts and tilt the neck out of the pocket enough to get to the truss rod without completely removing the neck. Still means slackening all the strings though and guessing how much to adjust.
17. I think the newer S2 Classics are a more versatile bass and if you max out the bass and treble control (leave the mids flat) they come close to the older Status sound. But I still play my old Series 1 (no trussrod), it's just got a certain something the new ones can't do, I think it's more instantaneous and aggressive.
18.
But where's the fun in an entirely stable neck? I thought we bassists love to tweak truss rods and, er, other things? I imagine Status owners have carefully manicured lawns and quartz watches that are accurate to 1 picosecond per millennium. Chaos, entropy (killer word), wild times, thats what life's about ... and slightly shifting bass necks
Imagine again, my "lawn" looks more like a bramble patch and half the time I don't even know what day it is. My Status basses however never change, but the old Fenders need the necks taking off to adjust.
19. I like the old Series 1s, still playing mine regularly after all these years! They didn't make them for long which makes them a bit rarer, I would say probably about £700 - £800 at the moment if it's in great condition. When the economy picks up it'll probably go back up again a bit. Unfortunately second hand Statii don't seem to be going for much at the moment unless they're headless and got fancy wood facings.
20.
Weeeeee, they know how to charge there. £795 for a 70s Ibanez Jazz copy??? http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/web/o...asses/item/6935
Yup, I liked the look of the 66 P bass in the original link http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/web/o...asses/item/6818 and thought it might be a bit more affordable as it's been modded, it looks knackered and is a CBS. Went off the idea very quickly when they told me how much they wanted for it.
21. I used my Hartke cabs (in their covers) as a kitchen for a few years with a large piece of worktop laying on top of them. Then when the kitchen was finally built I used the same arrangement as a wallpaper pasting table.
22. Fresh roundwounds are probably all you need. Muting and note length is all important, even if you prefer more legato slap playing to the more machine gun style. It'll test your muting on your fretting hand to stop strings ringing and to not catch harmonics when you meant to damp the strings. But otherwise slap isn't that difficult, it just takes a bit of practice and it's quite addictive even if it's not used so much these days.
23. Should do, my S2 Classics came with Duracell Pro batteries in from the Status factory and I've got normal Duracell in my older S2. Pretty sure the Kingbass uses the same Gotoh battery box so shouldn't be a problem. The batteries last forever for the preamp.
24. A popular conversion is to add a jazz pickup: http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/web/o...asses/item/6818 I've got a Japanese Precision with the extra pickup and it's very versatile.
