1. Here's a couple more: They're both a bit lighter than I was expecting, not sure if it's the facings on the back are lighter than the usual mahogany, or if phenolic boards are heavier than the wood I specified instead. They still balance pretty well, lots of sustain and no deadspots. The maple board on the 6 string seems to give it a lot of projection while sounding quite warm, great for chords (when I learn some!) and more solo sort of stuff. The fretless is surprisingly dark sounding, it still has all of the Status growl but a really fat mellow attack. To get the sound you'd expect from a Status I have to play it pretty hard over the bridge pickup, or dial in a fair amount of treble on the EQ. It's got halfwound strings at the moment, I may try some brighter sounding strings at some point but it's early days. Definitely keeping these for life!
 2.
I was just wondering if someone else on the forum had set up the profile as a joke or something?
The usual Off Topic nonsense! 3. After going through a load of different basses over the years I became convinced I wanted a Warwick Streamer 5 string, although it didn't feel quite right but it felt better than anything else I'd tried. So I went to the Bass Centre back in early '93 with the money I'd saved up, tried the one they had and liked it but not enough to want to buy it. So I tried a load of other 5 stringers but didn't like them at all, a couple of times they said "We've got that new model Status that was reviewed in Guitarist last month" but I didn't like headless basses. They brought it over and it was headed.... ah well I'll give it a try. And loved it, everything fitted me perfectly, had a big ballsy sound and was beautifully finished even though I wasn't sure about the shape. Pretty soon i got a fretless version (although they only had a 6 string) and few years later a wooden necked Energy. The original blue Series 1 is still my favourite bass although the others aren't far behind.
 4. I've been quite restrained, I've only bought one and ordered three since I joined Basschat. Oh, hang on, restrained is the wrong word...
 5.
Ive snogged Barbra Windsor !!!!!
How could you stoop so low! A very short friend of mine met her when she visited his workplace and they got chatting because they're about the same height. Then a few weeks later he bumped into her again at a restaurant. Then a couple of years later he was shopping at Brent Cross, suddenly Babs came running over and said "Remember me?" So now he tells people he gets recognised by Barbara Windsor. (Also my step mum went to school with her, and still refers to her as that dreadful Deakes girl!) I was at the Randolph Hotel in Oxford in the late 90s for a Christmas do, went to the gents and Vic and Bob were in there. It was only afterwards I thought it was strange they even go to the toilet together. Only music claim to fame, I was once in a band that had The Kays supporting them... they went on to become Kula Shaker, we went on to be....... no one.
 6.
Lolz is this some sort of joke or something?
Just ignore him, as Clarky said elsewhere "He's not fit to lick Mark King's bendwell"
 7. I have groundwounds on all my fretless basses, they're super smooth like flats but a bit brighter so definitely give them a try. Elixirs should help too, a lot of people here love them although I've yet to give them a go.
 8.
Does anyone remember Wayne Brathwaite? Around in the 80/90's and sadly went to play Bass upstairs a few years ago. He seems to be one of the session players from that era that dont get a shout around these parts.[quite a CV] I cant find much Youtube stuff with him on. But here he is with Herbie Hancock. Big Rich tone and groove sim to Marcus Miller at that time. [By the way not a post about Herbie going all Electro ] Garry
Remember seeing his name on quite a few LPs, he must have been playing something good to have made me want to find out who was playing. Can't remember which songs or artists though, will have to do some digging.
 9. Just listened to Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life back to back and I think you're right. There are a few more songs on Key of Life I don't like, but that's probably because there are just more songs.... the good ones are mostly better than Innervisons, although I still think Misstra Know it All is my favourite Stevie song. Great afternoons listening!
 10.
I still think Songs in the Key of Life has all Stevie's best stuff. Not to mention all the classic up-tempo numbers on that album. If I could write one song as good as any of these I would die happy.
Innervisions for me but not by much, Mistra Know It All with Willie Weeks on bass is fantastic.
 11.
As a latecomer to Basschat, here's my Empathy that I had made back in 1992, and has been my sole bass ever since... Don't be fooled by the non-standard knobbery - I had the preamp changed a few years ago after a few problems. The original pre had stacked bass/treble and parametric EQs, which I had Rob replace with a simpler pre as that's all I ever wanted. So don't dis my bass! Figured walnut for front and rear facings. Interestingly, although I chose the wood, Rob ended up putting the front facing on the rear and vice versa. Once all finished and lacquered up, I realise that he made the right choice - he is indeed the master!
Can't quite put my finger on it but there's something about that bass that just looks right.... very nice! Nothing wrong with having a simple EQ, my Series 1s have bass and treble and that covers everything I do.
 12. Nate Watts is rapidly becoming one of my favourite bass players, another classic track!
 13. Sugar coated body? Dry Roasted neck? Now you're talking my language!
 14.
Is Mike Mills from REM using nickel rounds in this video? They don’t sound like flats and the when the light catches the strings they shine quite brightly which makes me think they are nickel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJlvgHwemXE
Could be half wounds, basically round wound strings that are ground off to feel like flats without losing too much brightness.... because they're ground off they generally look pretty shiny and polished. Don't think they're ordinary roundwound though.
 15. OK, I admit the metal dustbin idea was a bit rubbish. If it's the more retro looking Sadowsky, how about fitting a Fender style ashtray over the pickup? The early Fender one's were earthed via a small wire into the pickup cavity, would of thought that'd stop any interference coming in from the front.
 16.
If it's an iPhone, they're prone to this. Mine does it horrifically, to the extent it is now off in any live or studio performance. Some people put their iPhone inside a 'makeshift' tin-can holder, seems to do them ok.
Or stand with your bass in a large metal dustbin on stage.
 17. Is there an app for that? Must be a shielding problem in the bass somewhere....
 18. Glad it's working out for you. I, on the other hand, put down my bass after 5 minutes practice to see if anyone has replied to my stupid post about Lincoln biscuits in the Off Topic section.
 19. Yup, they all have that graphite growl, including my old Energy 5 even though it's all wood construction (apart from the graphite rods in the neck) I really like the full on sound of my Series 1 graphite neck thru with the ash body, and I like the sweeter sounding S2 classic mahogany / walnut bolt on.... hopefully the alder / graphite will sound different again. Not sure my playing would do justice to sound clips, will see what I can do when I get my chops back!
 20.
I've got around a £1000 saved for a new scrapheap (car). So checking out Gumtree etc, nothing grabbing me. On Sunday the better half goes "Do you really need a car ? would you not prefer another bass ?" I have 3 already, and she would be giving up lifts etc....is this normal ?
It could be a trap.....
 21.
If it's a through neck instrument, it'll probably be made like a KingBass - The through-neck being inlaid into the alder body, then the graphite shell over the top of the alder. Sounds like it'll be a nice instrument, however he makes it!
It's not a bolt on so you're probably right about the construction. I guess the Streamline and the Stealth are the graphite sounding basses and the S2 All Graphite will still have a fairly woody traditional sound despite the finish.
 22.
........ Chris Wolstenholme's new all graphite S2 is an all-in-one moulded instrument.......
It says on my order confirmation: Facing wood: Alder with Graphite Shell Back wood: N/A Tone block: N/A Veneer: N/A Finish: Natural High Gloss Polyester I'm not sure if that means it's all-in-one construction or not? Rob said it'll be Graphite finish front and back fading to black around the edges.
 23. Back in the day I had my action so high you could drive a bus under it (when there were only Routemasters) It was so high I used to have to tune a semitone flat because getting the string pushed down to the fret stretched it back up to pitch. Now I've come back to playing again I've set them all super low and I kind of like the feel of it, but I'm finding I want to sneak them back up a little to get more dynamics and less click. I'm currently at about 3mm for the low B and E, going down to about 2mm at the D and G.... so still fairly low, but I may raise them a little more yet.
 24.
Not a slap fan at all, but MarloweDK is an astonishing player.
He's a great player who can probably make any bass sound great for any style. Although these clips sound great I can't help thinking they'd sound even better played on a different bass! (I've nothing against Riks by the way)
