1. I find it really useful to rake across the strings, you're moving your hand upwards anyway so why not use that motion to play a note? I find it super useful for playing ghost notes on funkier bass lines too, I find it better to play a ghost note on a thicker string (E or even low B ) as it gives more of a thud. Strict alternation is worth working on too but I'd say practice both and soon you won't think about it... you'll just do what feels and sounds best.

 3. Welcome to Basschat! Just looking at your blog now, looks good so far. Will follow with interest!
 4.
Hey people I need your help. I have a Shine 6-string fretless bass and for the life of me I cannot get strings for it, Extra long scale don't fit and I'm not sure what to do. I can't even find the bass online any more(it is a few years old granted). Any advice? Do extra extra long scale strings even exist? Please Help
Could you grab a tape measure and let us know exactly how long scale your bass is? Most are 35", some 36", a few are even longer... DRs are pretty long, also pretty expensive but they do last longer than most strings. Status Hotwires are available long scale and in halfwound if you're worried about your fingerboard http://www.status-graphite.com They all fit my 35" fretless 6 string and I'm sure people here will suggest plenty of others...
 5.
Both the drummer and the bass player were lucky to get that gig so good luck to them. I think they survive it and play their part even though it is all Bellamy, IMO. I don't think the type of bass really matters FOH..it is what he feels comfortable playing on stage for the track. I do disagree with gratuitous changes though... and there is more mostly making the sound than the bass in there.
I always thought it was Dom's band and that he got the other two in even though Chris Wotsisname was originally a drummer.... Dom's drumming seems to be very well respected in the drumming world, he plays some very tricky stuff sometimes.
 6.
Holy Thread Revival Batman!!! Missed this first time round, but just caught Paloma Faith's performance from T in the Park on telly. Quickly went from "What the... ?!!!", to "Hmm, who's the cool lass on bass?", to "Hey, this is rather good!!!". Very impressed by the whole performance, all underpinned by some tasteful bass. Definitely not the sort of thing I normally listen to, but this has put a big smile on my face. Isn't music great?
I had exactly the same reaction when I saw her on Jools Holland, she's really rather good.
 7. I got round to watching it last night, the mix was better than Glastonbury but not by much.... some of the other acts had bigger problems, Calvin Harris' first song was inaudible apart from the drums, then one member in the band was gradually increased a song at a time so by the end of the set you could almost hear all of them. Maybe Chris Wotsisname is also getting used to his new toys, Rob at Status only dropped those new S2-Classics round to Muse a couple of days before Glastonbury. As for head bobbing, don't all bass players do that? I know I do
 8. Seen a couple in traditional sunburst finish that look awful with the funky retro futuristic styling, but your metallic red one looks stunning! I want one!
 9.
Have just received my S2, 5 string from Lancastercomputors as advertised on here... What a lovely Bass. Now just got to fathom out what all the knobs do !!
It's probably got a board 301/302/303 so: Large one nearest bridge pickup = volume Large one nearest neck pickup = pickup blend Small one nearest neck = treble cut and boost Small middle one = mid frequency sweep used in conjunction with small switch Small one nearest bridge = bass cut and boost Small switch = mid cut/flat/boost approx 6db So the small mid frequency sweep won't do anything with the switch in the middle position There's also a trim pot inside the control cavity for adjusting the overall output of the preamp. Hope that helps!
 10. Had one about 20 years ago, it sounded and played pretty well.... not brilliant but not bad either. Mine was a blue 5 string and I got rid of it because the strings were too close together.
 11. I've just come back to bass playing after a 12 year layoff and there seem to be quite a few others here who are doing the same. The last 10 years I've been working round the clock building my business and had no time for hobbies, but things have slowed down now due to the recession. Maybe people are saving some money going out and picking up their bass instead, and hanging out here? A bit of a false economy, I've bought (or ordered) 4 new basses since joining basschat
 12.
I thought they were injected moulded - the foam inside being the yellowy type stuff?...........
I had to change the pickups on my '93 Series 1 when I first got it and was surprised to see a yellowy hard but spongy looking substance under the carbon fibre weave, I think I've seen something similar in a few broken Formula 1 tubs and suspension arms. I guess if the necks are largely hollow you have to fill them with something, I wonder how the fingerboards are fixed on? I was surprised when Rob said I could have maple or rosewood fingerboards, I assumed it would have to be the synthetic phenowood they used to use. I always suspected the weave was purely cosmetic although the chrome weave option (Retroglide Kingbass) is an additional layer that goes over the normal weave if I remember correctly. Great basses though, however they're constructed!
 13.
Hey Luc, As I said on Statii.com, with your updated pictures of your new S2 5-string, I think Miss.Myrtle has been supplanted as the most beautiful S2 ever! Congrats again
Both fantastic basses, I think Miss Myrtle is one of the very best of the highly figured wood Statii... but Luc's Tulip wood looks really classy especially with the understated black hardware.... Don't think I'd be able to choose between them, I'd want both!
 14.
thanks for all the infooooo, it says grapite on the headstock thats the reason why i thought it was a grapite. i havnt taken the pots off just the covers, however i think i may have lost them unforuntaely do u know if theres anywhere to get replacements? so overall u recon about 3-4 hundred? thats cool Thanks for the info and stuff guys much appreciated
I'd have said maybe £400 to £500 as it's a six string although it may take a bit longer to sell for the same reason. Although there have been a few other Status basses that have sold very cheaply on eBay recently... Status carry quite a lot of spares for most of the basses they've ever made, although there are probably cheaper options on the web. Going for genuine parts probably won't affect the value, but you've got a better chance that they'll fit.
 15. Finally got round to watching it last night, a bit cheesy in places but otherwise a great gig. I reckon people will still be talking about it in years to come.
 16. I prefer the headed versions with the slightly longer scale length, I guess I like more traditional looking basses.... I got my Series 1 after it was reviewed in Guitarist Magazine in '93, tried it at the Bass Centre and just loved the feel of the neck and the huge sound even though I wasn't particularly keen on the shape. Wanted a 5 string fretless version but they only had a 6, then later got a wooden neck Energy 5. The shape has really grown on me now, like the extra strap button so they don't fall over when you lean them against a wall. Picked up an S2 Classic bolt-on 5 a couple of weeks ago, feels like my old basses but has a different character and loads of different usable tones. Saw some fine basses at the London Bass Bash a couple of days ago but I think I'll be sticking with the Statii!
 17. I thought the sound was a bit off, particularly the bass. A good performance but I think they've done more exciting shows in the past, plus I didn't think the new material sounded so good live either.
 18. A big thanks to Tom (EssexBassCat), Andy (Netballman), Barrie (Molan), Jack (Currrls) and everyone else who contributed to a great day. Was great to meet you all and see some fine basses. Bernie was fantastic, had lots of time for everybody and very entertaining too. He builds some stunning instruments, I loved that 5 stringer that had a wood grain like the scales of a goldfish. Looking forward to the next one!
 19. I don't particularly like the 80s look, so I go for headed ones with 2 piece bodies. Best of both worlds!
 20. They can look quite nice with black hardware if you want something a little more understated: Go on, you know you want one!
 21.
I dont think the Chris wotsits Status sounded very good? Very tinny slap sound more of a hi-fi sounding bass rather than a full rock sound. I have done three piece own material stuff for years and feel you need a bigger fuller sound to fill it out and maybe so did he as he kept going back to his jazz style bass, Pedulla is it? Sounded much better to me.I used to have the exact same model Bass Collection SB320 in trans green that he used for the first album ,I had mine first so really he copied me!lol I agree to some extent with bassnut here, I try to like them and enjoy some of there earlier stuff but would not bother going to see them live or buy any of there albums. But I do give them some credit for having a go at mixing it up a bit and trying to come up with some epic tunes.
I didn't much like his bass sound with any of the basses, it just seemed to get lost in the mix... and that slap sound was horrific in my opinion! An all graphite Status S2 Classic..... gotta get one!

 23.
I'll most likely be self-catering, but if Vera is up for doing a Buffet I may be tempted. Stuff that! It clashes with the Cricket too! England v Australia at Old Trafford - 10:30 start. Anyone bringing a radio? P.
Never mind the footy and the cricket, what about the Valencia Grand Prix?!
Is any one taking a Status Series 2, headless 5 along ?
Hoping to bring a headed S2 classic 5 string, they sound very similar but the scale length is a bit longer 35" instead of 34" if that's any help?
 24.
Is it possible to heat/shrinkwrap the bass body somehow first? No idea if that could work, no idea if shrinkwrapping can damage the bass at all?
I reckon it'd be better to shrinkwrap the bucket of water before throwing it..... That's not to pour cold water on your shrinkwrap idea Rayman, just think getting a bass wet is asking for trouble!
 25.
Hi guys - serious tech question. If I was to throw a bucket of water over a bass would there be any resulting damage? And any tips for drying the bass to ensure there is a happy outcome for all? The bass will NOT be plugged into anything in it's moment of torment.
If the pickups are fully sealed they might be OK but any with visible windings / magnets / pole pieces would probably suffer in the long term. Pots and active circuits could probably fail pretty quickly afterwards. Neck wise, you might get away with it if you plug up the truss rod adjustment temporarily, maybe wax the fingerboard and any bare wood. And lightly oil the bridge and tuners. But would suggest you strip it down completely and dry it all off immediately. But if any moisture gets in it may make the wood expand and crack the finish. My Fender P bass suffered badly from this when I lent it out and it was stored in a damp room, the neck also twisted up. Maybe a quick dousing wouldn't be as bad as it sitting a damp room for a few weeks but I wouldn't risk it!
