1. I've used AutoGlym in preference to T Cut and have had some very good results. Care and patience are key - don't go crazy and scrub at the finish. AutoGlym is a very light abrasive: it's necessary to work gently, applying with one cloth, then removing and polishing with another. The job can take time but the with patience you can polish out light scratches (fingernail hits etc.) and emerge with an unblemished finish
2. This is ridiculously cheap! These are very nice, very versatile basses with the usual Alembic build-quality.
3. I stopped using backline as far as possible towards the close of my gigging career. The major advantages were (i) less hassle and gear to carry, and (ii) fantastic sound. The bands I was working with used great engineers/PA companies and the direct sound (a Status Series II or Gibson Ripper into a DI box) was just amazing - almost a spritual uplift. A combination of side-fills and wedges was more than sufficient for monitoring (this was years ago, long before IEM). Should I ever get tempted back into gigging (mightily unlikely), the backline free route would be my favoured approach. The best bass tones I've ever achieved have been without backline.
4. Absolutely lovely - a very classy look - I'm a massive fan of 2TS and the burst on the Sadowsky is lovely
5.
Taking into account that obviously, the higher the gauge the higher the tension, i ordered some Status 40-125 SS Roundcores. Not as high of a gauge that i was after, but still a 1/4 thicker then my current usual sets. if it doesant work out, i'll probably go for the DR's or some Pressure wounds. Cheers!
Any news on the SS roundcores yet - I'm fairly interested in these - I too want to find something low-tension but fairly bright and not too hard on fingers?
6. This used to be mine - absolutely stunning bit of kit - the best combo I've ever used by a long way. If I didn't have a 502 and a 112, I'd have this back immediately
7.
That one was also one of Kevin's, I believe
Hmm...not had a dig around but I think you're right...a pattern appearing
8. I think that is just fantastic - love the pastel colours. I saw a pink VJ with bound and dots Brazillian board on here and was hooked. I would have no qualms whatsoever in playing that bass anywhere - just a fabulous slice of '50s Americana. I've got to get a shell pink to go with my sonic blue - I'm inspired
9. An absolute steal - under normal circumstances, £2k wouldn't get anybody into the Alleva game. Current prices for AC are around $5k in the US (plus around 25% to get one into the UK) - and this one appears to be entirely as new. If I could play fives, this would be long gone.
10. I tend to get over to the Gallery for anything serious - I know it's not West but I think it's worth travelling down from Manchester (such are the results). It's probably less than the two hours round trip for you (and you can drink the wine on the tube - I carry mine in a Lucozade bottle)
11. I've been using one for around 3 years - the prices have come down in the UK and I'd say they're a good buy. Reasonably light, powerful and very clean. Very immediate and present - agile and responsive. Quite a hifi tone, and very hifi with a hifi bass (Sei etc.). Great for jazz and fusion, and can be hard- edged for finger funk. Ver even across the range - I don't find the highs brittle (with an Epi cab) - probably more 'airy' (this is how I've found them described). As OBBM says, great tone out of the box but eminently teakable (low and hi mids are easily controlled and boominess or boxiness in a live setting can be eliminated without much hassle). I don't use a lot of grit in my tone so haven't tried to get that. However, I've used the amp for bluesy rock and it performed really well - a big, fat, dark tone with a Warwick SSII. At around £650-700 second hand, these are a steal (and build quality is superb). I've had mine up against a LMII - I was impressed by the latter but the Epi was streets ahead in the departments that matter to me.
12. Very cool bass - I had one from around '78 and it was good fun - better tuners than the earlier models but not the same reliced vibe. It looks like there's a bit of cavity re-shaping to fit the new pickup - it this the case? Whatever, this is a real bargain and I doubt it'll hang around.
13.
Lozbass' Series II #251 is [for me] the most beautiful example of a mid 80's Status I could possibly imagine.
Why thank you sir - you are a gentleman and your comments are greatly appreciated! When I'm next over your way, I'll be sure to bring the bass along with me (and you can teach me how to play it! )
14. If you've used lemon oil to clean the board, I'd put the old strings back on for a few days at least. Some say that the residual oil gunks-up new strings so it's best to let the old set take up the larger part of any oil that remains on the board.
15. Haha - well done Clarky, a good move. These Spoilers are fantastic little basses and not such an extreme departure for those of a Fendery disposition. I agree with Crazykiwi - the tone of the Spoilers etc. can be much warmer than some Series basses - some of it is down to the construction, but I think a lot of it is the circuitry (which, though not the same as a series/sig is still pretty sophisticated) and absence of a bridge block. A lovely looking bass and very playable - I'm envious too!
16. I've just received a Chord speaker cable from Marc - absolutely excellent product, packed well, despatched rapidly, great price - a very easy and friendly transaction! A most highly recommended seller - thanks Marc!
17.
Got bored this morning so took some more piccies of the rig and basses. From left to right: 1981 USA Fender Precision Special (an ex Beedster!). Burgundy. Note the tool fitted behind the body (his name isn't really Harry!). Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 1995, Vintage Sunburst. Fitted with a Bartolini pick-up.... this baby really screams!! Markbass TA 503 head with Alesis 3060 Compressor and Korg DT1000. Markbass 106HR Cabinet. Westone Thunder 1-A. First bass I owned. Sandberg California PM4 custom heavy relic. 'Dear Old Blighty'. Ovation Applause electro-acoustic bass with serious fret sprout (must get round to a re-fit soon!).
Love those old Precision Specials - 'wish I hadn't broken mine (and then sold it)
18.
I can't currently find it anywhere for £739 anyway. £765 is best I've seen at the mo. I'm sure someone will put me right on that if they find otherwise tho!
Here we go, http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/...o-Amp-2-x-6/AXM Lovely bit of kit and I'm tempted!
19.
If you're ever passing Solihull or j.12 M40, I'll take this...
Thanks Tredders - I'll certainly let you know - cheers!
20.
thanks for posting..sounds as good as it looks..i got gas for that bass
Hmm...me too - would go nice with the Vintage P...(not entirely sure I can make it sound like Oskar does !)
21. Great deal! I have an old Ripper from the early 70s (heavily modded) and it's a superb bass. Rippers seem to divide opinion - some love 'em (like me), others loathe 'em. The Epi is very different from an original but still looks suberb and I'd suspect, is a decent player. You'll need to consider a case - Rippers definitely won't fit in a standard case (body width).
