Harley Benton flats - they're a bit good!
Hellzero replied to mcnach's topic in Accessories and Misc
In fact, they sound like the Thomastik JF, without the high price tag and their super smooth touch, and with more tension, of course. -
This is what I mean by "mistake" - as in, not working as intended. It feels like such an obvious omission that it can't be intended

Had a GK1001RBii and couldn't take to it. Was very loud but just couldn't get a sound i liked. Dave

I have a Status Shark Pro-active sunburst 4-string. Great bass, plays well. Set up as a piccolo but I've not played it for years. Probably because the piccolo set came with an unwound 'G' which feels weird.

Used to play that in early 80's and loved it then and that's a great version of it. Very nice indeed and that sound effect works really well with it. Great to see a 3 piece band cover songs like this. Dave

Not arguing with that at all, I’ve captured most of my stuff at a variety of settings to get the widest range of useful captures. Again not questioning the quality of the model, purely pointing out that Id expect a capture to have at least some breakup when pushed. Possibly depends on what input signal was used to train it I guess though.

Gibson EB0 1968/69 Bass USA This old bass comes complete with original tug bar, working mute and bridge cover. The big Gibson mud-bucker is stock and sounds massive. Short scale, set neck with pearl inlays and rosewood board. Mahogany body. I replaced the foam in the bridge as an old yellow kitchen sponge was in it when I bought it. The screws holding the cover in place look newer to me and there is some more modern looking wire connecting to the jack in the control plate. See pics. The other thing I did was to replace the G tuner as it was slipping (in ‘68 Gibson were using imported tuners from their Kalamazoo range to keep up with orders as interest in the bass hit it’s peak). On the headstock picture you can see the original which I will include. When I took the tuner off Schallers or similar had been fitted at some point but then returned to stock. It is strung with Thomastik Jazz flats. When I bought it the bass was wearing the heaviest, nastiest mix of black nylon Rotos and round wounds but the neck had managed to stay straight. The bass has had no neck or headstock repairs. It’s lovely to play and nice and light but resonant. It is a one trick pony but it does that trick very well and I found it very musical. The action is low and the string tension low so unplugged it’s quite buzzy. Played through an amp it sounds great but at the time I was using it I was recovering from a fretting hand op so playing it now it could probably do with the action raising. I’m out of action again with rotator cuff so can’t do this at the moment. The trussrod works properly and the frets have life in them but are probably due for a crown. I bought it with a pretty nifty home made case. I would think it rare to find one with all its original hardware. UK only sorry. No trades, pickup preferred so you can try it out but I can post if that’s difficult. It’s a gigged, vintage bass over half a century old so lots of finish checking (that looks gorgeous) and dings. The pictures show it strung with D’Addarios but the bass is now wearing Thomastik flats as per description.

Thanks Rob all good to know how they fair live. Watched the 310 v 212 cabs on BF youtube clips and the 310 had a bit more punch but still kept its depth. Dave

Sire bass with closest spec to the squire CV 60s PB
Marvin replied to Springywheel's topic in Bass Guitars
I've only played one Sire bass, and that's one of the very first V7 jazz style basses that came out. C shape, 38mm nut, 7.25in radius. The neck on that is not too dissimilar to my Squier VM Precision with regard to the thickness from back to front. As far a I'm aware the first Sire precision style basses, the P7s, have the same necks as the V7s. There was quite a discussion on Sire's Facebook page as to what sort of neck they should put on the P7 and the prevailing opinion was stick the V7 neck on it. Whether they're still like that I wouldn't know, and I couldn't comment on the P5 as I've never played one. You could maybe contact Andertons, who stock Sires and Squiers and ask them about similarities and differences. -
Yeah, I wasn't implying model vs capture was better or even that the SVT on the Anagram was lacking. I’ve heard that the SVT and GK had infinite headroom and couldn't be made to break up, people have also said they've boosted the signal to push the models to break up and get some saturation. Just curious which is true. I’ve not heard a single comment implying the models sound bad though so they've got that bit nailed 👌

Another special request, this is the complete John Mole performance of the tune 'Castles' from the 1977 Colosseum II album, 'Wardance'. Standard Rock-ballad fare but a lovely tune (I love these ballads Gary Moore wrote during this period - much better that that Blues stuff he gravitated towards later in his career. I guess he had to go where the money was, like most of us). https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/castles-colosseum-ii/
