  1. Past hour
  2. My SR256B. Used it at my last gig. At current exchange, I paid about UKP300 for it. Sorry for the crappy pic, but I took a whole bunch on one day for insurance, not to make them look pretty.
  3. Absolutely luvverly. If it had at least one more string, I'd be really jealous, not just a wee bit.
  4. Two Gunslingers - Tom Petty
  5. Today
  6. Mrs Zero and I have both been unwell so skipped Tuesday but I went to the Kingfisher in Chelmsley Wood on Wednesday, just as house bassist as my voice was well below the normal very low bar. Played with a few people, some with prior notice, some without. I fluffed a few things, as I expected, but wasn't too bad. Tonight was the Crown at Shard End, Mrs Zero came along as well but again neither of us were singing. Quite a few drop-outs and I think there may have been something else going on. Someone I know from open mics at the Cavern in Tamworth turned up with a drummer and we did about half a dozen numbers, and a friend from the Shirley open mic night also came along unbooked but with so few there, she got on, and recruited the drummer and me. Downside was that early in the day, I'd managed to gouge a chunk of skin out of my right middle fingertip - still connected so I've put the flap back in place but it's just where I strike the string if I use my middle finger, so it's index finger only or plectrum. And tomorrow night is a gig doing R&B, which is not ideal.
  7. How is this still for sale a year later lol
  8. The buyer can easily customize this with the @Kiwi carbon neck. Would be one serious instrument.
  9. My gut feel is that the acoustic tone of such a small body will not sound much like that of an upright, even less so when amplified. You could spend a lot of time and money chasing shadows
  10. Sure, but it can also be a question of cost and value for money as well as how pretty the pedals look? For some folk spending £900 on two pedals, whose job can be done by just one other which is well regarded and well established, for a fraction of the price, is also not going to be rational or potentually indeed affordable. So whilst the discussion may be tedious to some, it can also provide useful information to others?
  11. This. I prefer 2 windings around the post. Locate the string in the tuning peg with just one wind then hold the string so the bridge end is free and can untwist and straighten out. Then tune up. I can't remember the last time I had a dead string.

  15. Actually a 5" is slightly less cone area than a quarter of a 10", because the frame and surround are included in the diameter and as their widths are similar (to allow similar rigidity and excursion) the functional area of the cone is a smaller proportion of the overall area.
  16. Jesus. Not for the faint hearted, but really interesting.
  17. Always wind to the bottom of the tuning peg, and check that the strings aren't in torsion (twisted) when they go through the bridge. I do this by getting the string tight enough to produce a pitch (not anywhere near the final tuning), grip the string between my thumb and forefinger and run them down the length of the string from the nut to the bridge - when the ball end spins then you're taking the unnecessary twist from the string. Doesn't happen everytime I re-string, but it's worth doing every time, just in case.
  18. I usually go for 1 ½. Have never had an E-string slip.
  19. You could try a contact mic like an Ischell C3 or a Schertler. They are both pretty costly to buy just as an experiment though.
  20. Lonesome Cowboy Burt - Zappa
  21. I'm firmly anti-gua. I assume the name is wordplay on 'gua-no'
  22. Blimey. How did you manage that? I did something simlar to my chinese plywood special. A friend who repairs guitars managed to apply a maple cleat underneath the smashed bit, then push the wood back up enough to patch it from the outside. The bass had a black lacquer finish, so it waa essier to disguise once the finish waa smooth. I don't know if that would work on this though.
  23. Cowboy Song - Thin Lizzy
  24. If you were happy to wait for a bit and wanted to avoid a dealer, you could advertise it in the instrument sales section of musicalchairs.info. Quite a lot of more valuable instruments seem to sell on there.
  25. Yet another five-star transaction from Mick. He's a class act.
  26. Just had the pleasure of dealing with @gary mac again, this time Gary sold me a great little accessories case. What can I say that hasn't already been said about Gary ; he's an absolutely top bloke, talented muso, a highly respected luthier and a longstanding and very well liked Basschatter... Suffice to say that you can deal with him with complete confidence, Folks! Thanks again Gary and all the best for now, Nik 👍😊
  27. This is a very old debate that I always find a bit tedious. Some people are only concerned with pure functionality, and yes, the VTDI is perfectly adequate for that, because you can't hear the difference in a live situation anyway. Others (myself included) want that little bit extra, that look and feel. That's not rational, but it's fun. I, for example, find the VTDI very ugly, so I use other preamps. Both approaches are fine.
