TIme to confess all I guess.

After many conversations with Si (Old Git) and then Jon Shuker, I've decided to ask Shuker to make a 5 String Precision for me (hence the reason I'm looking to sell my Lakland DJ5). Inspiration certainly came from Si's 5 Stringer, but this one should be markedly different.

Spec is below and Jon has confirmed it will take a maximum of 5 months.

I'd be very interested to hear what you think.

Number of strings: 5
Body: Swamp ash Jean Jacques Burnel Precision shape
Body thickness: 40mm
Neck: 1 piece rock maple
Fingerboard: Indian rosewood
Number of frets: 20
Frets: Medium jumbo
Fret markers: White Pearloid block markers/matching binding
Side dots: Black
Nut: Brass
Pickups: 1x Delano Precision, 1x Delano Jazz
Controls: 2 x split knobs (1x volume, 1x tone)
Bridge: Schaller 2000
Machine heads: Hipshot
Hardware: Chrome
Pickguard: Black Pearloid
Scale: 34"
Width at nut: 45mm
Depth at first fret 19.5mm
Lacquer: Gloss Polyurethane
Neck Lacquer: Satin Lacquer (15% gloss)
Colour: Transparent Blue
Electronics: Passive/ wide band tone cut
Truss rod: 2-way and carbon reinforcements
Head shape: 4+1 (as per P-Bass on Shuker website)

The deposit has been paid, so now the long wait begins...
nice colour combo- trans blue on swamp ash, black guard and rosewood board.

how are the pickups selected/switched?
The idea is to have one split volume pot for both pickups and one tone pot for both as well (similar to the stacked pots on the old Fender Jazzes)

ah, got it.

when i put together my Warmoth P I put in a 5 way rotary switch for pickup select (1 neck, 3 both, 5 bridge, and inbetween sweetspot blends using presets pots- quite complex to figure out the wiring, but very simple to use) and a push-pull vol pot that bypasses the vol and tone.

How can it take *that* long to make a Bass?

'Cos he's making quite a few of 'em I guess!

Sounds like a fantastic instrument though :)

Gonna have to be patient... patient... patient.

Congrats on placing the order !!

When it comes to the waiting time, you just have to trust your luthier and let him get on with it. If it takes a little more time, then it takes a little more time. You're going to be using the bass for many years to come, so 6 months or so isn't that long to wait.

I suppose as more orders come through then more staff may be needed but for a small, specialised company that may not be the best thing. So customers will have to wait longer to ensure the product quality stays high.

The time will fly by. I waited very nearly a year for my custom bass and it went quite quickly, apart from the last week before collecting it !
Nice one Nick. I only live 20 minutes from Jon's place so I popped in a while back - nice guy and lovely gear. Decided to go down the MM route rather than a custom - but we all make mistakes. Your commission sounds sweet - but why not BLACK!

Cheers, Mart
I seriously thought about black, but my logic was that if I'm going to get a custom bass made, I wanted to see the quality of the wood etc, so didn't go for a solid colour. It was a difficult decision though

It was too good an opportunity to be missed. I might even name it the MB1 Tribute model!!

I will have to charge ,should you even consider using my name. However if you were to send me,youre Rickenbacker(should have been the chris squire one) im sure that should cover it!.Never had a real ric and cannot explain my Gas for a blue one now, most strange.I remember Chris Glen used to play one out of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band...(a much underestimated little band!)...One for the new year, Me thinks, Ay Caramba!..... there passive too!........Oh Vic Ive Fallen!.....

A few more pictures from Jon.

The fingerboard is now mounted on the neck and it's been bound also.

Jon's used Mother of Pearl for the binding and it's turned out darker than we both thought due to the transparency of the MOP which you need to use to give it the 3D effect. He's going to try and find a very thin laminate to put between the Mother of Pearl and the rosewood, which should lighten the colour a little.

Tell the truth though, I actually quite like it as it is. As the bass is going to be a transparent blue as well, I think it will look pretty good.
