Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting

I wouldn't ordinarily do this - but with FeeBay going the way it is, I doubt I'll be selling much more there:

Buy my JapCrap

Oh & should add in the unlikely event anyone's seriously interested, make me an offer, I'll gladly pull them off EPay & sell them proper, like.

Sold! To the headed weirdo :)

I'd like to say you led me to it Jon, but I spotted the relisted, reduced-in-price auction and then headed over here to see if it was on your list of JapCrap

Well done sir! Very unusual decapitee, that one.

Think that's the third or fourth time that's been on, I did mention it the first time I saw it & kind of forgot subsequently, what with the price getting incrementally lower and all... ;)

I have been a little tardy with my JapCrapping of late though, I have to admit. Not that there's been all that much to shout about in the last week. Where are all the Rickenbuggers? ;)

I've seen it several times myself and had to check if it was the same seller...it was. I only chanced upon it again as I saw Bill Wyman last night playing his headless and was idly trolling ebay to see what was currently on the market. Considering how many questions the poor bloke has had to answer, I'm surprised no one actually bought it before. I'll probably soon find out why however...

I was seriously considering a bid on that and wondered if finn17 was you. In fact the only thing that stopped me bidding was the minor detail that the auction had closed the day before!

Looks fantastic - hope it plays that way too. If you ever get bored of it give me a shout.
So what's the best value bit of JapCrap then, Jon?
Hard to say, really - usually the stuff you pick up at car boots & charity shops for buttons! :) Not too many bargains on the Bay, because it's all becoming a bit collectable.

Although Ebay has a funny hierarchy of brands, people assume (for no good reason) that some brands were better than others, and that some were junk - and it's not that clear-cut. Columbus, on the whole, were pretty cheap & nasty, but people will pay silly (for JapCrap) money for that brand. Avon, on the other hand, has a reputation for being the sh!ttest of the sh!t - and while this may have been true at first, later ones appear to be from Fujigen, and were really nicely made budget instruments.

As far as the 80s original designs go, you won't go far wrong with any of the Matsumoku brands - Aria, Westone, Vantage, Westbury & so on. All built to a very high standard, very popular at the time, so lots about to choose from. Much, much cheaper than Ibanez or related brands - and in no way inferior.

Unless you do find a Gumtree or boot sale bargain, there's an element of pot luck in buying JapCrap - but what's good is that you're unlikely to lose money re-selling, if you don't like it.

I was going to go away and think about it, but realised that the BIN price was so reasonable it wouldn't be there when I went back...I'd seen it listed a few times and thought it had changed hands but it's been the same guy trying to sell it for some time now.

I've exchanged some correspondence with the seller who seems a great chap with an interesting site devoted to historic guitars:

I know this thread is mostly for UK Japcrap, but I thought I'd post this as it's an absolute beauty, and fairly rare too, and I'm struggling to keep my finger away from the trigger!

Oh, now that is something. It's like a single pup Ibanez Musician (MC800, I think) crossed with a Blazer. That big humbucker's the same as the one on the very first Blazers, before the redesign.

Rare? That'd quite likely be unique in the UK if you did go for it - I don't think Greco was ever officially available here, it was predominantly a Japanese domestic brand.

Lovely bass! :)

Here's one I just spotted: late 60s Zenta Violin Bass. Not my taste by a long shot, but I thought it suited this forum... currently at £9.99, under 3 days to go.

A couple of Mats.

An Aria CSB-300 - not a 380 like he claims in the listing.

RSB Performer with a Carlbro practice amp

Yes - that's seven Westone Thunder 1's. Amusingly, some of the sellers describe them as "rare".

And a lonely basket-case Westone Concord:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=150219784367

A very sexy Aria Pro SB-R60:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=250219787627

Something you really don't see very often - a Washburn Stage Series B20/8 - 8-string:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=230225643264

And the Washburn Bantam from a couple of weeks ago is back, £100 less but still too dear!
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=260215003110

Not much from Fujigen today - but this very 80s Ibanez RB760 is worth a look:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=320221239602

And a few Precision clones & derivatives:

The ubiquitous Kay Backbreaker:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=330214927313

A Hondo, with a big Custom Sound combo in tow:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=200202562651

This could be a nice project - a through-neck P, probably a Cort, with a Ronseal refin:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=320220881582

And a very sweet-looking Maya, complete with covers, hiding its light under a bushel. Whatever that means:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=150219361134

Tempting, isn't it? It's too similar to my Ibanez 2366b to justify it, though. Good luck!
Columbus, on the whole, were pretty cheap & nasty
I'm about to recieve my fifth, and I've only had one two cheap ones. First was an EB-3 copy, really nice, great pickups, but i didn't get on with the short scale. Then a Les Paul, also great. Next Les Paul was cheap. Single coil pickups in humbucker housings, horrible neck. *Third* Les paul was much the same :) The one I'm waiting for is a fretless jazz. I bid heavily on the block necked jazz earlier in the thread, but missed out.
