Not really. These things are quite sought after, as the early Hiwatts were pretty much based on the Sound City amps of the time. Just the transformers are worth very good money, likewise the valves if he replaced them with Mullards. I'd guess people are bidding in the hope the the output tranny is still good.

Normally working 150's go for about 250-300 or so I've seen.

This is quite silly for a non working 50.

Then again, it's not a bass version, so I suppose if guitarists think it's going to be an easy fix...well, could be worth it.

I've got a 50PA which was non-working when I bought it earlier this year for £20 and a 200Plus which still needs some work doing on it to reduce the noise - a common fault with the mark 4s.

I suspect the real reason is that David Gilmour admitted that he uses some Sound City 50 heads for recording. I still think that it is currently over-priced. Goodness knows what it will end at.

My first amp was a Sound City 50 - was pretty good really. The Carlsbro replacement was not a better amp, but it was a lot smaller, lighter and didn't smell so bad...there's progress for you.

I wouldn't pay more than £100 even if in good nick, (with mullards and gold plated mains plug.. ^_^ )

This is interesting. The fact that when you click on the number of bids all the bidders are named Bidder1, Bidder2 etc is quite dodgy. I think it's a scam. Recently, I wanted to sell my Sony Ericsson mobile phone as I had upgraded to a new handset. I knew I could sell it on Ebay for around 100. When I looked at similar models, I found that some had bids up to 500! I looked at the bidders and they were all named Bidder1, Bidder 2 etc. Here's an example:

Look at any legitimate auction, and you'll see that the bidders are NAMED by their Ebay ID. Here's an example;

Unless I'm missing something (and I might be, I don't use Ebay that often), this appears to be a scam. I guess the logic is, that a potential buyer would see all those bids, and assume it must be worth it if that many people want it!!

Hey Stu - that is something eBay put in place a while ago, for security. When it goes above £100 or £200 or something, the bidders automatically get their identity hidden. I'm not sure how much more secure it makes it though.

There's a music shop near me with a Simms-Watts 120 guitar head for sale, £250 if anyone is interested.

Someone else got it backwards - the late Dave Reeves who was Hiwatt built stuff for Sound City for a while as a sideline.

And don't forget Gregg Burman - good as Hiwatt, and these two were streets ahead of everyone else.
