I've just ordered the cable from the Peterson online store (didn't realise that you could get them from Thomann) - was about £10 (comes from the US - will probably take a week or more to get here) + £5.99 for the app.
The app does look very cool - did a quick test using the built-in iPhone mic & it was pretty impressive... £15.99 for a Peterson tuner seems like a good price & well worth a punt.

I used to have a tuner on my old S60 Nokia. It worked well but wasn't a strobe.
I also had a sound meter. Never really used it though.

Isnt the cable just a small jack to large jack socket convertor? Or am I missing something..?

That might work, though as the iPhone socket is stereo out and mic in the correct connections would need to be made I guess.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but i have just bit the bullet and downloaded this for my iphone, and frankly iv found it to be rubbish! Cant really detect open E, no chance on open B, and its wobbly everywere else? Is there something you need to do with this thing before it works right? i also have the Guitar toolkit, which works just fine, ironically i bought this for the extra accuracy! Any recommendations?

One thing I can suggest is to make sure you aren't overloading the input.
I use mine at all my gigs without any problems.

I have the official adaptor and use a cable. I have a iPod touch so it doesn't have a mic.

Is there no other cable in existance that would do the same thing? Really don't want to be paying 10 plus international shipping for something which may be found in maplins for loose change.

Well i got mine for £13 over here but yes, there are cheaper cables around.
In fact i was using a Nokia AV cable i got with my old N95 before i got the peterson one.

If you have any AV cables that have a 3.5mm jack that has 3 sections to it (not sure what they are called) you might be in luck. All i had to do was put a phono to jack adaptor on one end of the Nokia cable and it worked fine. Its just not very elegant.

I would say yes. Thats the type i used before. You would still need an adaptor on the phono end though.

Yeah, i guess that would work. You do need to be careful with the input level but im sure you can control that on the desk.

okay i bought the istrobosoft cable, and i'm less than impressed. Half the time it doesn't correctly recognise ANY of the open strings (regularly shows the B as F# and the E as B!), and struggles anywhere on the B and E. On top of that, when i 'tune' it up to istrobosoft it appears out of tune on the other tuner i have on there, so i now have no idea which is right.

This thing gets good reviews, iv tried it loud and quite, thumb stroked and plucked, direct from bass and from mixer, all as warbley and inaccurate as the other.

I sometimes get the B instead of E come up, but usually I pluck the string a second time and it's fine. It probably should be better, but I haven't found it to be an inconvenience at all.

As for tuning, I find the iStroboSoft is spot on - it tunes to the same pitch as both the guitarists I play with, the tuner that is included in the Amplitube Live software, and also the Polytune iPhone app. Perhaps its worth playing with the settings? Hit the "i" in the bottom left - your concert A pitch may be something other than the 440.0 Hz, or you may inadvertenly have a key drop.

I always plug direct into the tuner out on my amp, which I presume would be a pre-eq sound. There are "Noise Filter" and "Input Boost" buttons that help the tuner better isolate the frequencies - see if they help out at all.

Yeah i am doing it exactly how i should i think, volume on bass at about 1/2 with eq off, set at 440hz +0 C, noise filter and input boost activated, either coming straight from my bass or from my mixer, and its just hopeless on the B and E, and as i said can't really detect the other open strings. Its fine for tuning at the 12th, particulary harmonic, but thats no good as i know my intonation isn't perfect.

If your intonation is out then it will the fretted note at the 12th fret that will be wrong not your harmonic which will be exactly an octave above the open string.
