Favourite Players?

Hey all

Was just wondering, who you look up to in the world of DB

Personally, I really dig Avishai Cohen at the moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rczDGUTtHRs

Also, who can forget the big dog: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VuiucCzXuE

So, who does everyone else like as a player?

There are so many great upright players around. But some of my favourites are guys like
Christian McBride,Ray Brown,Paul Chambers,NHOP,Ron Carter,John Patitucci,Eddie Gomez....there are just too many to
mention or think of right now.

I nearly forgot.......Edgar Meyer is particularly awesome.

I love James Jamerson's upright on the Four Tops Jazz album as well you can tell he really enjoyed playing on those tracks.
If you like Wille Dixon, check out Ernest 'Big' Crawford - that's him on Muddy Waters' 1948 version of 'I Can't Be Satisfied', but also to be heard in a trio with Big Bill Broonzy and Washboard Sam, and a whole load of other people. Not a lot of info about him but check out this little article:

Ali Friend and Danny Thompson are the guys who got me playing double bass after 17 years of electric bass. Recently though, I've been really getting into Paul Chambers on Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue'

I can't let a mention of Danny Thompson pass without posting this absolute gem of a recording. His solo gets the hairs on the back of my neck standing up every single time I hear it.

My all-time fave DB player is Scott Lafaro in the Bill Evans trio - so melodic and driving

Also big votes for Paul Chambers (mainly with Miles Davis but his solo stuff is also pretty good, eg, try You'd be so nice to come home to) and Charlie Mingus (esp on the Massey Hall album with the all-star line-up of Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and Max Roach)

+1 on LaFaro and Mingus. I've been listening to them a lot too. Can't play like any of them though. :)
