Old strings.

I’ve had TI Jazz flats on all my basses for maybe 5 years. But recently I’ve been unhappy with the tone I’m getting, especially from the old Jazz bass. This morning I dug out an old set of Labella DTB’s that the TI’s replaced and put them back on the bass. All of a sudden my favourite tone came back. I’m now thinking about the Labellas that used to be on the Stingray. Although my aging fingers do like the TI’s.

Not necessarily talking about old strings, but I have certainly warmed to a bass because of the effect the strings had on the overall tone.

 

Case in point, one of my students has a very nice bass and as we were chatting away, I complimented him on how great it sounded that day. Rich, resonant and full of harmonic overtones. It turns out, he'd taken the strings off the bass that I had sold him a little while ago (my preferred string) and put those on this bass!!

My SQ P bass wears 20 yr old dead Chromes. Pretty amazing. A light touch just behind the PU and its like a J bass bridge PU wth a bit more heft, incredibly dry and in a funny way kinda dull....but, sounds glorious out front. Cant ever imagine playing fresh rounds again.

Even with rounds I prefer old ones. Not a fan of springy, super snappy sound

How do they compare with the TI’s? I’ve got them on two basses and love them. I see lots of positive comments on la Bella strings but have yet to play any. Flats are tough to experiment with due to the cost.

I used Laballa DTB’s for years until reading how good TI’s were, and buying a set. I like them. But I recently became aware they didn’t seem to suit the jazz so much. Just a bit too bright for me. And I think the same for the Stingray, but other Stingray users might like them. They work really well on my Medium scale Aria and are fine on my Ibanez SR.
