I am emotionally attached to a bass that's taking up space and I don't want any more

If your 89 SR4 has a birdseye maple neck, they're fairly sought after due to coming from a time when EB was trying to re-establish the brand and when they weren't being charged any more for figured maple neck blanks compared to plain maple.  Not sure if that helps you reach a decision one way or the other but it comes from a good period...unlike the pre-sale-to-EB early 80's rays which were a bit of a crap shoot for body woods.

I'd say hold on to it. Basses take up very little room: it's also a beautiful thing. If you need money, sell it: but not until then. Hell, hang it on the wall as a trophy if you want to: there are plenty of very very rare instruments which wind up in safety deposits and never being played at all.

I have a number of 4 strings, but I mainly play 5: I actually like swapping back occasionally, and I've considered fitting a D-tuner on one of them. I also have a drop pedal on the board in case I ever fancy playing a 4 with BEAD without having to retune (it sounds OK in a band setting, it works).

You love playing the Dingwall, but if you pick up your old warhorse, do you feel a bit of mojo? It'll feel different, too: necks feel different. That difference could be something which inspires you a little to play something different. Why not have some tunes which use 4-string which you play on that one only, just for yourself?

The bass doesn't need to justify its keep unless you feel like it has to. I love keeping older basses: I've never actually sold one since I started in 1988. I have a fair number.

He stated in his original post that he has no interest in playing 4 string basses any more?

Do most of you live in private houses?  I've only ever lived in flats as an adult and I've found that the lack of space (as well as being left-handed) is a great check on either GAS or accumulation.

In my 20s I was playing a lot and living in single room bedsits and moving often, I always had at least 4 basses/guitars with me and could move all my belongings in a small hatchback (this was the late 90s when there were pretty small). Guess it’s about priorities 🎸🎸🎸🎸😂

We have a tiny little country cottage but I make room. Priorities indeed. I've currently got 9 basses, which for example is 9 more basses than kids.

All about planning, I can get 8+ basses in this….

And there's my wife asking why I need 3 😁  Do you have any duplicates or are they all completely different from each other?

You've got almost a thousand posts here, you should know by now that nine is nothing to some of these nutters. 😁

Basses here. Although that page of the new site is even less complete than the other two so no judging please. I don't have anything too wild, but by and large they do different things. The last bass I sold was a Spector because I had two Spectors and whenever I wanted to play a Spector I always picked one of them and not the other. Didn't make sense to keep the other one. They have to be a little bit different to keep it interesting, or at least that's what I'll tell myself when the OP's red Stingray goes for sale. 🫣

What are your three?

It looks cramped with 7, perhaps my finger counting isn’t working

Mine would stop at the first part

“red ones sound better for Motown” wouldn’t work.

She can see one has five strings and has some advantages for playability, ones an acoustic bass and one she bought for me and I won’t sell. simples

The highest number I ever got to was a pitiful 5 😄

Warwick Broadneck Streamer Stage One 5

Warwick Broadneck Thumb 5

Fender Player Plus Jazz V modded with onboard Sadowsky pre.

Small but perfectly formed, your average quality is way higher than most.

Never been higher than three, one acoustic and purely for jamming.
4 string is a constant since 2005 (she bought it)

5 string is latest in a fairly short line of jazz bass, p bass, this five string

YEAH I know

Okay. Bit of context. At the moment I have:

  • '89 2EQ Stingray, the one I've been talking about.
  • A Harley Benton 5 string unlined fretless that I pick up and play occassionally and have plans for - I've done a few practise sessions with a guitarist mate and it'd be lovely for a two-piece as we harmonise quite well.
  • Dingwall AB 5-string that's got an issue with the preamp and is with Bass Direct for a couple of weeks while they get replacement bits in

For the last few days I've been doing my daily practise on the 'Ray and it is soooooo nice to play. Honestly, strung with Elites it's so easy to fly around the fretboard though it requires incredibly accurate fretting, but it's so responsive. Good god, it's got a hot output. When I gigged with it I just whacked the bass and treble up to full but now I find the tone insane. I am starting to recognise why so many players move from a Stingray to a Jazz as they get older though backing off the bass and treble can tame it, it's kind of like having a sports bike and putting stability wheels on it. What's the point in having all that power if you don't use it? Anyway. I'm still erring on the side of selling it but I'm not in a hurry. I am in the process of acquiring something that could help me make my mind up so will keep you posted how that turns out...

Maybe I just don't have the GAS gene.  Then again I still have/use the first electric I ever bought as a teenager in 1983 which freaked someone out on a different thread.

The wife jokes are pretty funny though.  (I assume they're jokes??)  Mine built me a storage rack for the instruments that I do own.  I can't believe I never thought for that.  It's great!

Normally such a boomer thing to see online but I think this thread has been thankfully free of wife jokes.

It's not so much the desire to own lots of basses, for me. But I want to know what people mean when they talk about the feel or tone of a particular instrument. I've tried a Rickenbacker in a store but never really spent proper time with one, or a Warwick or Schecter or Spector or Bacchus or whatever. It's often taken me months with a bass to realise that it's not for me, and work out why but I've really valued the time I've gotten to spend getting to know some of the amazing basses I've been lucky enough to own over the years.
