I’ve dealt with him before and the idea that he’s just a benevolent collector that sells his basses is complete bollocks. He’s a sound enough guy and the 1 deal I did with him was a good deal for me, but generally he’s way overpriced, but he’s 1000% a trader.

Case in point - a couple of weeks ago I messaged a guy on Facebook about a BB735a that was up for £450, and he said he was sorry but he’d just agreed a sale. Within 12 hours the same bass (distinguishing marks and strings showed it was definitely the same bass) was for sale by Tony for £675, so yeh I was a bit pissed off about that one, but if you’re not fast you’re last I guess, however I don’t like the duplicity of telling people you’re a collector and denying you’re a trader when it’s obviously total BS. You just end up wondering why, what’s he hiding it for? I’d still deal with him if he had something I wanted etc, it is what it is but it’s better people are aware who they are dealing with IMO

Edit: Sorry it was a BB734a not a 5, but same rules apply and all that 😆

This 100% is what I’m talking about. Given he’s got about 100 basses it’s not a high turnover operation!

He’s a lovely guy - he really is.

I’ve sold him a few bits and had 1 bass off him.

He’s deffo the next level up from me in terms of buying gear to try out to then sell at a later date when the honeymoon period is over…

Some of his stuff is really keenly priced and some of it is a bit rum.

But he has some decent stuff.

If you think he's expensive there's a used Fender American Professional Jazz Bass V currently on Reverb from a UK based seller. The seller is taking offers but the asking price is £5,500.00 with £250 delivery costs. I messaged him and he confirmed the £5.5k wasn't a typo.

You often see Reverb sellers do this for a few days.  They then reduce the price and Reverb flags it as a 50% discount or whatever it may be.

Ok but £5.5k really stood out. Surely it's a £1.5k bass at best.

Some absolutely lovely basses there. I really like that Maruszczyk Stenback-ish bass, the blue TRB is also very nice. Same goes for the Japanese Fenders. I consider myself lucky I'm on the other side of the Channel and have no bass budget atm, but otherwise...

Not bad, Beedster. Swedish prices are a little on the spenny side.

Yea, kinda optimistic, mostly

The Spector Ian Hill he has FS was sold last year as B stock by Bass Direct (I was following it and clocked the s/n) at about the same price, from memory. His pics don't clearly show the small dings/scrapes like BD's pics did. Not implying anything untoward here .. its still a very nice bass ...but, if I was buying a resold B stock bass, I would be after more of a discount.

Well, after a couple of recent buys that didn't work out (for weight reasons), I messaged Tony about the Spector Ian Hill. He sent videos of its condition and him playing it and we agreed a price that both felt was fair (which took into account my comments on the post I have quoted above). Totally legit guy, very friendly and clearly his prices are flexible. Hope this is helpful

So, did you buy it? It is still listed on Gumtree as "weeks old" even though it has been online for months.

Andy Baxter also recently listed an IH Ltd (different serial number) for a similar price (£96 more). Mint condition and only 3.67kg! (not my bass).

I did buy it. I paid several hundred less than the one on Andy Baxter's site after our haggling. Think Tony I is just a bit rubbish at updating Gumtree advert (it said "weeks old" when he first listed it last year, when he had not long bought it from BassDirect ... given how many adverts he has, I think he just hits refresh when an ad expires!) I had a good experience

PS, mine weighs 8 pounds 2.5 ounces, so almost identical weight to Andy Baxter's (1 pound more)

Will do, am waiting on some oval mother of pearl crown neck stickers from US to make it look more like a "regular" Euro 4 (and the earlier IH edition from c.15 years ago). Plays beautifully and sounds nice and punchy. Also the blemishes are virtually invisible on the gloss black, thankfully. To all intents and purposes, anyone from a foot or two away would think its brand new/mint
