I think you can only have one or the other of those.  Maybe if you spoke nicely to a friendly, local garage/bodyshop they might be able to help you out, and be cheaper because it's not an instrument refinisher you're speaking to.  But to do so you'll probably have to do all your own surface prep - sanding through the grades, perhaps applying grain filler if the body is a porous, open type of grain.  If they're going to help you at all, they'll expect a surface that's ready to paint.

As others have said the more prep work you can do yourself, the more "cost effective" it will be.

 

If you're hoping to give someone a body with the existing finish still on (I assume it's just the body otherwise it's going to get very expensive) and get it back with a new colour then you are looking at something that will be fairly time consuming and therefore costly. Removing the old finish especially a poly one is hard work and you'll be charged accordingly.

depending on the current finish type and condition it might be possible to refinish directly over the existing finish, but the cost is still going to be a fair amount, nitro metallic silver paint is about 19 quid a can, then it will need some primer or undercoat for a similar price and then a clearcoat on the top for the same price again, that's 60 quid in materials minimum, so anything more exotic (like metalflake or a deep sparkle finish) will cost more, then you need to factor in the time required and the hourly rate of a skilled individual to do the work.

 

refinishing an instrument is rarely worth the outlay, the cost is usually prohibitive once you get a professional involved.
