I briefly mulled over selling my Elf this week as I have just bought another small Class D head. But the Elf is just so handy to carry as a spare, takes up very little room in the kit bag, and I wouldn't realise very much cash for it. It just makes more sense to keep it.

I also tried the new small class D head through the Elf 2x8 to see what that was like, and it really is a very capable cab. So that's now my new tiny rig, with the Elf head as backup, when I just don't need to schlep the big rig.

I posted this pic in the How was your Rehearsal thread. The eagle eyed among you may spot the Elf next to my TecAmp Puma.

I took it as backup, as I will when I gig, because this was the first time I'd been able to hear it at louder than bedroom levels. I could have used it for the whole rehearsal/vid shoot, and I've no doubt it can handle a proper gig with my 2 guitar lineup band if it goes through my modified Tech Soundsytems 2x12.

What other head did you get? I am looking at a small light setup for the studio and then something I can easily carry to a rehearsal. I play more funk/jazz/drum and bass so nothing super loud.

Was thinking maybe the TE 2x8 paired with an Elf, and then later on I believe I could add the 1x10 to the mix, which would drop it to 4 ohms. May be wrong about that.

Are there any other small setups like this that I should check out?

My tiny rig has changed again. I'm a sucker for Barefaced cabs, and have been running their Three10 as my main gigging cab for quite a while now. So, I've picked up another BF One10 to use as my little cab. I'm also quite a big fan of of Gallien Krueger RB series heads from the 80's and 90's, so I've bought a GK Legacy 800. The One10 is 250w, but the GK is 400w into 8 ohms, so I will have to be careful. I'm still keeping the Elf head as a backup.

Ive just ordered a THREE10 this morning, cant wait. On the ELF, I was thinking of buying one purely as a back up just in case amp should the main valve amp suffer a fault. Are these really that good? Just for stage noise, the main sound is DI to a PA

I think you'll love the Three10 Paul.

The Elf is noticeably better through multiple speakers at 4ohms. I've not yet had to use it on a bigger gig, but I do have confidence that it would get me through a gig, any gig in fact.

I have used it as the main amp in small rooms with a jazz band and a funk band, and in the huge cavernous space in Lancaster Priory. On the Priory gig it was DI'd, and the engineer was very happy with the DI it provided.

Thanks @nikon F for putting up the YouTube comparison. I have a Gnome iPro (280 watt) and had the 200 watt version before. I have to say that I prefer the tone of the Elf in that comparison, except for when he was slapping. I think that is reflective of the built in EQ of the Gnome, whereas the Elf has more of the TE one out of the box. You can get close with the Gnome but it takes some tweaking of the EQ controls.

I find that my Gnome, with its 280 watts @4ohms, works really well with my Barefaced Two10 and is very giggable. Paired with my LFSys Monzas, it sounds pretty horrible until I correct the eq. I suspect that the Elf would sound pretty good (without such tweaking) with the Monzas but possibly a bit too vintage with the Two10. Horses for courses and as the guy in the video points out, there is a significant price difference. If Trace came out with a 300 watt version of the Elf (for not much more cash), I would be tempted to jump for the tone, plus headroom.

You got me thinking about the Gnome. Seems to have a lot of juice, and to me the sound is quite similar to the ELF.

What do you all think about a Gnome plus a TC Electronics 2x8 mini setup for the studio and rehearsals? I could add another 8ohm 1x10 down the road for more lows.

Nothing can be "too vintage" for me, that why I like it! I do play a vintage P bass with LaBella flats on though.
