NBD - 1976 Musician Stingray Fretless

Recommended Posts

After a long(ish) search & after exhausting all other options including getting Ernie ball to make a new one, BFR's & five strings I finally got my hands on this exquisite bass.

Via a private sale & at a decent price I've finally got one! Plays absolutely beautifully & weighs a tonne too!

Fretboard was swapped a few years ago by a studio in London & new bound ebony fretboard installed.

At first I wasn't really keen on the binding, but it's growing on me.

Hipshot D Tuner installed (I have the OG tuner) but alas no original hardcore.

This is my second ever vintage bass after my 72 Jazz & I've fallen in love! Unfortunately I don't think I'll be using her for every gig I'm hired for, but I will try my dammed hardest!

Serial starts  No. B00. Neck signed by "Andy"

I was a bit hesitant at first, but I think it "classes" it up a little bit haha!

1976 = vintage?. Holy shite, what does that make me?!

Nice bass though; natural ash and ebony stingrays just look "right" somehow.   Just curious .... How does it sound compared to a modern EB one?

Thanks! I find it’s got a bit more heft & weight to the sound compared to the EB modern ones

Damnation. Getting gas now.  The gallery have three of them, all around £3k, but all maple board with frets .... guess they'd fit an ebony one for another few £100 ......

..No...  don't even think about it.

Luckily no jobs coming up in North London ... Otherwise I'd be unstoppably "drawn" to Camden ... and we know what happens then.

Due to the Covid-19 situation and severe back problems (67% officially disabled because of it) plus right shoulder injury (non-operable capsulitis from which, after more than 3 years, I will never fully recover), I'm selling all my basses over 4 kilos and also the ones I'm not really using. I've also considerably lowered the price for a quick sale.

(new price is way more than £3000 GBP and some time to have it finished...)

      Weight : 4.680 kilos
Action : from 1.5 mm under the G string to 2 mm under the B string at 12th position (can go lower, but was perfect for me)

Will come with the original Hiscox hard case (2 keys inside), a set of Dunlop black Straplok (used) and the Luminlay torch.

      Non-smoking environment as usual.

The bass has been fully set up professionally. It has received a new battery and has been fitted with a brand new set of La Bella White Nylon Tape Wound 750T-B-XL strings (50 - 65 - 85 - 105 - 135T).

Certainly one of the best fiver fretless around. Top luthier build quality (Alan Cringean aka @skelf is in the top ten, for sure) and a sound to die for. The neck is a pleasure to play and the sound has tons of mwah. The original preamp was an ACG EQ-01 (there's a mistake on the website confirmed by Alan himself), then @Bass Wielder put a John East Uni-Pre and I removed it to put a Richter BassXX 3 bands preamp (filter based too, but with fixed frequencies except for the mids), which, to me, suits the bass better, making it easier to dial in the sound you want and having a full real passive path. The La Bella White Nylons are simply perfect for this bass (and any fretless, by the way) as they allow you to make very fast slides and also small accents with dramatic effect. There is absolutely no neck diving.

I'm only selling it due to my health problems as it's really too heavy for my broken back.

What you see is what you get !

Look at the photos taken under different angles and light to see the excellent condition of this bass. Some very minor scratches and very small dings impossible to photograph, except for the two obvious dings photographed that were already there when I got it.

Beautiful Overwater fretless bass, custom made for the original owner around 2005.
The bass has a stunning quilted maple top and a nice green/blue burst finish. The fretboard is made of ebony.  It's an active bass.
      Pics:

There are several cosmetic damages to be found around the bass; dents, scratches, missing paint chips; battle scars. The fretboard shows signs of use but is definitely in very good condition. All hardware and electronics function like they should. The bass plays very well and has plenty of the mwah you want from a decent fretless.
An original, high quality Overwater gigbag/softcase is included.
      €1.150
Trade or partial trade negotiable. I am mainly interested in a Music Man Sabre or a good precision Bass, avri fender strat or nice offset model, vintage duo sonic...
I am located in the Netherlands, but happy to ship at buyers risk (insured, well packed)
