magee Posted September 10, 2018 Share Posted September 10, 2018 I bought a pair of speakers and one of the bits isn't working. The trouble is it's so incredibly specific I'm having a terrible time sourcing a replacement (well, the hi-fi repair guy is). I wonder does anyone on here have any ideas about where to look for out-of-date, super-specific high end hi-fi parts? I imagine the answer's 'no', but this place is such a fount of expertise that I thought I'd try my luck. What I'm looking for is the crossover unit from KEF speakers - it's faulty so the sound isn't reaching the mid-range driver. The speakers are: KEF Reference Series Model One - Two (ie the second version of the Model One). They are from I think about the late '90s. I've looked on eBay and looked for spares/repairs ones going cheap to cannibalise but there just aren't that many out there. Any pointers very gratefully received. There ain't nothing complicated or difficult or unobtainable or out of date about a Kef crossover! A long long time ago *I blew a tweeter* in my Kefs, found an equivalent fit, bought a pair and fitted them. Good job I got the pair, they were a massive improvement over the originals for about £20 IIRC. * You know the really high part of Edgar Winter's Frankenstein? stevie Posted September 10, 2018 Share Posted September 10, 2018 Agreed. None of the crossover parts are likely to be " out-of-date, super-specific high end". Caps and resistors will be marked with their values and any electronics person with half a brain should be able to order replacements from a specialist supplier. You're unlikely to need a complete crossover. The coils might not be marked and will have to be disconnected and measured (if that's where the problem is). If the caps are blown, the markings might have disappeared. In which case, you simply open up your second cab and have a look. KEF have a reputation for good service support and will probably send you a diagram of the crossover if you ask them. If you don't mind my saying so, your repair guy is either incompetent or lazy. 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
dyerseve Posted September 10, 2018 Share Posted September 10, 2018 My only suggestion would be to make sure the guy fiddling with your crossovers replaced whatever component is needed in both crossovers. The likelihood is that whatever component he replaces, whilst having the same value, will likely have different tolerances to the original. Even of it has the same tolerances, how close the actual value is to the specified value will likely vary. Not essential , but in terms of stereo imaging it could be worthwhile. Start at the source and work backwards from there. I use Glasgow Studio Electronics for all my repairs from Ampegs, Trace amps to Godin guitar pre-amp. Iain will repair anything electronic with excellent workmanship. Might be worth trying him. Phil Starr Posted September 11, 2018 Share Posted September 11, 2018 Falcon Acoustics are really good for this sort of thing and are quite likely to have data for most KEF speakers. Capacitors are really quite simple to find and they wind their own inductors. Having said that Stevie really knows his crossovers to the extent that I'd ask him first every time for advice. Wonder why he doesn't do hi-fi gear. ? Same basic principles i would have thought. Looks like Falcon Acoustics will be a good bet. All the ebst with it.
