I'm just looking for a nice lightweight 112 cab and read many subjects about this on the forum, but I thought I'd ask anyway, because it seems like most people want their 12" to be hifi sounding I'm after a sound with a personality. Midrangy, growly, but also deep, articulate and bright... a bit of a mix between modern and vintage sound. I thought a 112 would be a good compromise since I would like to use it as a standalone cab. I'd like it to cover most of a bass' usable spectrum, be deep enough and yet bright and growly (à la Geddy Lee). If it could be not too much on the heavy side, I'd appreciate it. My bass : P-Bass Special. The amp : Genz-Benz Shuttle 3.0. The GB could provide the modern clarity and bright punch, and the P-Bass and the cab account for thump and the growl, basically - does it make any sense at all? Which standalone 112 cab would you recommend me? I've been looking through pretty much every info on 12" cabinets on the web and a few of them drew my attention, but I'd like to get your opinion on the matter. bass_ferret Posted October 2, 2008 Share Posted October 2, 2008 There is info on lots of 112 cabs on the basschat wiki. I like my Genz Benz Shuttle Neox112T rig but you might find it a bit hifi. It can be a tiny bit mid shy, but my bass certainly isn't and I dial in a little bit more grunt on the amp and I'm in tone heaven. Plenty of lows, and nice highs thanks to the tweeter, best running the tweeter pretty low though, as there's a lot of headroom on it. Apparently the DB112 addresses the mid problem of the earlier GS models and looks cool as hell to boot, plus they ain't too pricey. I'd have gone with a DB cab if I'd known about them at the time, that said though, I'm very happy with the GS. As far as using the one cab, I've not struggled playing shows up to about 200 folks with a single 1X12, however I play in an acoustic(ish) band and I only have a single guitar to contend with. Two of those bad boys would be awesome though. I strongly recommend giving Aguilar a go. There's nothing quite like trying stuff in that environment - just you, a studio, your bass, amp, current cab, cables, whatever. and the stuff you want to try. No slappin and shredding oiks or pushy sales people ... Mark's a great bloke with loads of experience who puts no pressure on at all. Hopefully they'll have some Aggies DB112 as their price sounds like music to my ear - I just hope they actually sound as good as the price tag is low. I read that Eden has some midrangey cabs too. I'm also looking for an Ampeg SVT-12HE but it looks like they're discontinued and impossible to find! Any idea where to grab one? Cheers! I bought one yesterday for smaller gigs, I've also got an Epifani 2x12, and to be honest there really isn't a lot between the two. The Gallery has them in stock.
