NBD - Fender Road Worn Precision Bass, Fiesta Red

Rather lusting after the Nate Mendell bass at the moment, and it is the road worn thing that's putting me off (that... and the fact that I don't really need one and it' just outrageous GAS). Think I may have to see one in the flesh... could be expensive.

That's quite a commitment to the Road Worn cause. Impressive. :)
Yes :)
To play an instrument i need to have a crush on it :D
I mainly play JBs so when i pick up a Precision it must be a uncommon one :)

That's funny - I did a short audio piece in my review of the Sire V7 Marcus Miller Jazz using the same backing track! :)

... In any case I'm quickly warming to the colour as the band don't like it, saying it's 'pink'...

...No, it's fiesta red. It's pink. No, it's fiesta red. Repeat until fade... :)
:D Know that too. Had that same bass and everybody (except bass players) thought it is pink. It's a bit easier if you a bass in burgundy mist. ;)

Andreas

Well that's just purple. ;)

Light purple? Lilac? At least it's not pink

Whatever color it is, you groove much better with a Fiesta Red Road Worn Precision :D
I prove it with this Live. Laurent Vernerey on Bass

Definitely purply pink in my book - depends on the lighting. Fiesta red ranges from pink, to red to orangey dependent on lighting.

Always fancied the sunburst model... however, new they're about 1200 squids now. Cant find a used one so now looking at the 50s pbass. At around £750.
That's nearly £500 for the relic job!
There is a bit more to it than that.

quite a bit more.
I have a Classic 50 Precision and it;s a great bass... but the RW series one is a pretty different instrument

Yes it is. No-one is paying £500 just for 'road wear'.

that fiesta red RW of yours... you have no idea how many times I looked at it and almost PM'd Karl to take it off his hands
I don't need it. At all. But I know what those basses are like and it was so tempting!

You should have, it's exceptional. It's my A1, go-to bass. It's going nowhere. Don't know how Karl could bear to part with it. :)

Enlighten me.

Try get both in your hands and you will (might) see.
A lot of it for me has to do with the feel of the neck/frets, weight of the bass resonance and it's sustain and of course the look :)

We have had a few disscussions on the differences, no one can really nail it, but try both as I said and you may prefer one.

According to fender the specs are the same, save finish of course...
Yes. We never did get round to discovering the differences in the other threads :)
There was talk of selected woods etc, but we never got to the bottom of it as far as I recall.
One is good and the other is even better. There I said it. All IMO of course.
I like these so much that I have held onto mine and let a couple of (good) vintage Fenders go.

I've only played a Classic once, but the RW seems lighter, more resonant and the neck plays way better. I suspect the body may be slightly thinner. It sounds and plays much more like a pre-CBS bass than the Classic does. It just feels right to me. Love it.

I`ve owned a Classic 50s Precision and played a couple of Road Worn Precisions. The Classic is a good bass, but the Road Worn is a really great bass. They feel instantly familiar, and the sound seems to just resonate through the whole of the instrument. It`s weird considering the only specced difference is the finish, but they really are a fair distance apart.

Okay... I get it... I think...?
I'm after a 57 Precision (my birth year). No way could I afford the real deal so it has to be a replica. I'm guessing the RW will be closest to the vibe... although a new one will be nearer my wallet. What a dilemma!

The RW's do pop up on here pretty often.
Buying one used you can't really go wrong I'd say.

I think the RW definitely has the vibe, and then some. That's worth a lot, IMHO.
OR... you could buy a Classic - and make quite sure you never, ever pick up a RW in future. :D

It was the 'roadworn' aspect that made me hesitate.
I think it looks good, but something inside me says it's a little strange... yet, having had those basses in my hands, I should have not hesitated that long... ah well, all the better for you! ;)
