i HAVE JUST BEEN INTO A COUPLE OF MUSIC SHOPS IN BIRMINGHAM AND HAD TO SUFFER THE SQUEALING OF GUITARS ON 11 AND WATCHED AS ABOUT 10 STAFF STOOD AROUND CHATTING
i THEN TRIED A STINGRAY 4 AND A BONGO (WHICH I KNOW ARE GREAT BASSES) AND THE SET UP ON THEM WAS APPAULING SO PUT ME OFF BUYING EITHER
MY QUESTION IS WHY DONT SOME OF THE GUYS STANDING AROUND SET THEM UP SO THEY ARE EASY TO PLAY AS SURELY THIS WOULD ENTICE PEOPLE INTO BUYING THEM
OR AM I JUST TURNING INTO A GRUMPY OLD MAN AS IT IS MY BIRTHDAY TODAY

happy birthday!!

Yeah, same situation with most shops I've been in recently. This is precisely why I don't like Warwicks and Spectors, as the only shop I've been in that stocks 'em had just bolted 'em together and not even bothered to adjust the action, let alone intonate 'em correctly!

Useless staff are the No1 reason for dwindling sales in actually music shops, IMHO. It's the reason I don't spend as much money in real shops any more. :)

So it's a shouting contest you want eh?
IIIIIIMMMMMMMMM WWWWWWIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy birthday though dude.
I'm quite lucky, the guy at my local guitar shop is an ex pro and always sets up guitars before selling em. He sets my warwick up for free every time cos i bought it off him, did the same for my classical because he loves fiddling about with classical and spanish guitars and even offered to set my squier up for free when i had him change the pickups.
He's a genuine enthusiast though, not like a lot of the money-grabbing clueless snakes that run most music shops.

Of course the flipside is that he runs a very small shop that doesn't get the bass porn in that other larger shops sell

PMT surprises me. I know a lot of people have left there recently and they may be short staffed.. may be short on time to set up some stuff, but I would expect most is pretty decent. No surprises about [s]Soundcontrol[/s] Reverb.. have never found something I like in there.

Many happy returns dabootsy!!!
PMT is what my wife gets every month isnt it, :) usually after ive announced my latest GAS attack!
Ive never in all my days playing known a music shop set up instruments i asume they think when you buy it you,ll set it up to your specs anyway so why bother.
oh and our fellow basschatter is probably
right a lot of music store employees probably dont know how too, i certainly dont and ive been playing 18 years, id rather pay someone to do it properly.
Hope youve had a great day mate, treat yourself to a few pints and plan your next bass adventure. all the best- lee

The Warwick I got from Reverb Stockton was set up pretty well, I just had to do a few tweaks when I got it home. I also tried a few Music Man and a Schecter and they were pretty good too. There are shops out there who are less bothered about the set up. They get 'em out of the box tune them (roughtly) and hand 'em on the wall.
JUST BEEN TO A GUITAR SHOP ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON!!!
Ears totally bashed by a flock fo 13 year old shredders, I expect.
Yeah why do they do that?

I found myself in our main guitar shop yesterday (first time in about a year) and yes 3-4 guys hangin' tough behind the counter, various preteens running around shouting about brand x is better than brand y and an obligatory kid in a 'tallica tee impressively shredding away. I thought maybe he worked there but no he finished with a mental nut to pup run, put the guitar down and walked out. I had a squint at the sh*tty basses with high enough action to get a bus under that they had hanging on the wall, each one with a prominent "don't touch label" but no visible price tag, glanced over to the "assistants" then just said f*** it I'm too old to be in here and left. I must have been in there 3 minutes tops. I'll probably forget and go back next year.

HAPPY BELATED ONE DABOOTSY!

I gave up on 'normal' music shops for this very reason.

You can hardly hear a note that you're playing over the barrage of noise from guitarists or bass slap merchants, and the instruments are never set up, they're just taken out of the boxes and put on display.

I only ever shop at the Gallery in Camden, even though it means a day out to London. The service there is second to none, they go out of their way to help you.
