I haven't seen an SB401 on eBay before.

Mind you, I don't see how you'd know it was an SB401...

Thanks. I think you're right, the BC basses have a note on the inside of the cover plate. But I do wonder how anyone looking at the advert would be able to tell.

There is also usually a stamp in the neck pocket. That is how I found out mine was a 4 series whilst shimming the neck.

The 301 was passive and the 401 was active. Otherwise they were exactly the same.

Yep, pretty much. When the model line was revamped from the *01 to the *10 models, the entry level 310 had active eq, which was essentially the same as the old 401 models.
