In the last 2 days I've heard of guys who's amps and/or basses have both gone ka-put in the middle of a gig. Do you take spare basses or run your luck? Spare amps or a DI? Spare Cabs? slaphappygarry Posted July 8, 2007 Share Posted July 8, 2007 Bass. Spare strings, gaffa tape, multi tool, fuses, spare leads/strap and a 9v battery. Di in the back of my amp which can be removed from the amp signal chain if the amp fails. Other than that, i think thats all you need to keep the show going. Extras similar to Gary - spare strings (snapped a couple so always carry a spare set), multi-tool (to change said snapped string), spare battery and cables... Have often thought about taking a spare bass but when I've got the PA in the car too there simply isn't room... In my experience (and I've done a whole load of different gigs over many years), I've always found that if you look after your gear it will look after you, also I'd always be inclined to buy the best you can afford, therefore minimising the risk of something going wrong... that said if something is going to go wrong it will, I guess you'd be really unlucky for something disastrous to go wrong. ARGH Posted July 8, 2007 Share Posted July 8, 2007 (edited) First of all,I like to bring myself to a gig,usually in a car or maybe on long hauls a van,I like to travel to the venue and go through the doors to get to the stage area,maybe walking up some steps if the stage is raised. Bass,cables,DI box,Batteries,Wire cutters and screwdriver set,mini torch,Rig,Strings,maybe an extra Bass on important gigs,bar towel,spare T-shirt and undies if theres a foam cannon about. stingrayfan Posted July 8, 2007 Share Posted July 8, 2007 +1 for the tools, strings and gaffa. You *always* need a roll of gaffa tape. I only ever used to take one bass with me to gigs. Never had a problem, never needed a spare. Then the guitarist in the new band says: "I always carry a spare.." making me superstitious. So now if it's a far away gig, I take a spare in a gig bag. I'm always meaning to take electrical tape to stick down my trailing wires, but always forget :/ Just wondering what douggy meant when he said 'spare sweatband for wireless unit'? Is this some groovy trick involving wireless units I've never heard of?[/quote] ahh i shal explain ive found the best way to attach a wireless transmitter to your strap is to double a small bit of gaffer back on its self so it makes a small non sticky patch ( the width of the strap ) then placing that on the outside of the strap and wrapping the gaffer round the strap a few times so its sturdy. this makes a small pouch for the wireless transmitters clip to sit in. to keep the transmitter on the strap i feed the strap with the wireless attached through a sweatband and it dont budge. i carry a spare sweatband because i have a habit of losing them! Finbar Posted July 8, 2007 Share Posted July 8, 2007 I think I understand the whole gaffer tape business douggy, but are you saying put the sweatband around the transmitter and the strap together, a bit like taping it all on, but without the sticky stuff? Is the sweatband really tight enough/a good enough hold for that? If that is, I'll give it a go! Magic I don't want to gaffer tape up my nice strap for no reason though, y'see. At least 2 9V batteries (covers pedals and Active basses) and sometimes 4 AAAs (Pandora) Old sets of strings as spares. Spare amp Kettle lead Small toolkit, including Allen keys (action) and some superglue and fuses, and Mini Maglite Spare strap Gaffa tape Towel ( [url="http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/hitchhikers/guide/towel.shtml"]LINK[/url] ) Small story: on a recent gig, we went through most of my contingency materials (spare strap excepted) in an effort to get the guitarists P.A. working. It didn't happen (speculation, internal fuse broken), so we walked away from the gig without playing.
