But after ten years out of the 'the scene' I figured if I really want to get playing again with a vengeance then I need to Network and build up a robust Black book (or facebook as it is now) of contacts. IMHO these people are they key ones to socialise with and (wash my mouth out with soap) I need to become one of 'those mates'. Being a robust and gigging musician is no different to being a busy plumber, consultant or dog walker. At the end of the day who you know always trumps what you know. I came back to the dark side about a month ago and threw myself into the jam and open mike nights (and it was nerve wracking walking into a room of hip strangers) - it has reaped untold payback. And ten years on the miracle that beholds facebook is wonderful. It is so much easier now to create a functioning network with ease than it was when I first started. I will end now before use the phrase 'back in my time'. - but I have seen the future and it is open mike/jam nights and Facebook (and M&S jeans with elasticated waistband. With such a powerful tool you can load and scan a basic bass line for pretty much most songs done at open nights. PaulWarning Posted October 7, 2014 Share Posted October 7, 2014 I do 1 or 2 open mics a week, but I take along my acoustic guitar and sing, I very rarely see a bass player, but there again I don't do Jam nights (which are totally different from open mics, IMO) they always seem to degenerate into an orgy of blues guitar playing, with the bass player doing endless 12 bar turnarounds, not my cup of tea at all. Mornats Posted October 7, 2014 Share Posted October 7, 2014 I've always been welcome at every open mic night that I've turned up at. Didn't seem to have to be one of the mates of someone. We turned up (by which I mean myself with a bass, Pinball with a guitar and our singer Amy) put our names down and played when our slot came up. We do end up making friends with people there but they're always welcomed us as strangers first. We've had invites to come and do a headline slot a few times, which we've gratefully accepted and thoroughly enjoyed. There have been one or two instances where we didn't get a chance to play but it was a busy night and we turned up a little late so that's to be expected.
