i don't put any pedals through a blender, wouldn't dream of watering down my TFR, and to me it doesn't need a blend at all, it adds bass and has plenty definition for what i use it for. BUT, the blend integrated into the diabolik is an integral part of it, and it's needed there (but it's a good blend, and doesn't sound like bass + fuzz)

Where can I get a TFR? The only UK dealer listed on W&C's site has no stock of it... Is it worth it to order from overseas?

100% the TFR is special - though is not in stock at prymaxe in the states either, but they always have a discount code, and it's cheaper (even with tax) to buy FX from that store that via UK dealers, at least in my experience!!

never tried the tarkin, but it sure sounds good on the pedals & effects vid - if i didn't have the TFR i'd try one for sure...

i don't see the appeal of blending with a muff... it's very much a personal thing I suppose, others have sent W&C muffs to Mat at W&C to add a blend, just because they like that sound if clean signal plus fuzz, but I really REALLY don't!!

And *cough* you probably won't get any customs charges ordering from them!

I don't like to blend in the sense that you'll clearly hear the clean tone in there, but with the Deluxe BBM I set the Blend at 3 o'c, which is not enough for you to notice the clean bass, but it's enough to add definition to the sound. It's a small difference but it makes all the difference :) I admit a 'tighter' fuzz won't need this though, might be the case with the TFR, I don't know...

I actually agree with you on this, and my loathing for traditional clean blend with Muff was the driving force behind creating (in my mind anyway) a better/different way of blending. I don't like that with a clean-blended Muff you will hear a distinct clean tone next to the fuzz signal - they just don't integrate and you hear two signals (clean and fuzz) rather than one big tone. On the Grand Tarkin, the clean signal is filtered to complement the fuzz signal and actually BLEND with it as opposed to just adding clean signal next to the fuzz.

The stock Tarkin (the basis for the fuzz signal in the Grand Tarkin) doesn't need a clean blend, it has plenty of low end on tap just with other Green Russian-based pedals. The addition of this filtered blend to the Grand Tarkin was to allow the user to create new tones by exploring the dusty ends of the Tone and Mids controls, rather than just the traditional blending of clean in with the dirt.

Mods - As ever it is not my intention to do so but if I've overstepped any lines here please let me know! :)

yes, there is definitely a good and a bad way to integrate a blend - on my malekko diabolik, it works better than any other pedal I've tried, so I'm not opposed to it on all circuits (though have not tried a grand tarkin or a pickle pie B, which also has a similar design I think, or at least a similar philosophy)...

 • 2 weeks later...

Well, curiosity had the better of me and I ordered a TFR from the states. Great pedal, fuller-sounding than the Bass Big Muff which sounds a bit shallow by comparison, unfortunately it doesn't interact well with my GK's EQ :( I really like to use Contour to scoop a little my clean sound and it has a great effect on the BBM too, but I don't like how it makes the TFR sound, it's like it's made for a flatter-EQ'd amp... I also find even without Contour the mid focus of the TFR is at a frequency that I don't find as pleasant as the BBM's, which I find more throaty and violin-like. This is all with pick by the way, which is how I mostly use fuzz. I have to say that with fingers and mid gain the TFR is a KILLER, but at high gain and with a pick its mids tire my ears very quickly... I'm still not sure what to do because I really wanted to like this but unless someone tells me a magic secret on how to get a BBM-beating tone from this with my amp it's looking like it's hitting the 'for sale' section pretty soon... Maybe I'll give the Tarkin a go.

Edit: hmmm, seems to be growing on me now, liking it more with the fuzz up to 2 o'c and slight tweaks/compromises on the amp's EQ. At certain settings it seems to blow the BBM out of the water. Guess I'll give this a go with the band after all.

I badly want a fuzz, but I can't narrow it down - for low end I love the tfr and the swollen pickle as well, for the mids I love the musket and I also really like the cog tarkin - it sounds really musical. What do I do?

Get a TAFM. Lovely bass. Lovely mids.

I don't know what it is but I actually hate fuzz, dont get me wrong, there is good ones and bad ones, and I've found numerous useable sounds with fuzz pedals. I particularly like a light overdrive going into a fuzz myself but still, a fuzz on its own is for me the worst.

I suppose you love valentines too?

;)

Any commercialised 'holiday' where I feel pressured into buying a card I love.

I feel pressured into getting fuzz as it seems a very bassist thing to do.
Bit crushers are more me.
