Green russian muff alternatives

Hi guys n gals,

So I have a Black Russian big muff and love it to death! If I had the cash however I probably would prefer a green russian instead.
What I am fixing though is that the reliability is questionable at best, and I need something I can rely on for gigs. So far I have seen the wren and cuff tall font russian, and the arc effect big green pi, but anyone have some other suggestions or experience with either of the two mentioned above compared I the original sovtek?

I've had 2 bubble font Russians, a General Guitar Gadgets clone, EHX Bass Big Muff, W&C Tall Font Russian and the ARC Big Green Pi. Out of the clones, the W&C sounds most like an original green. Saying that, I've never heard anything that sounds quite like an original. Whether that is just me being picky, I can't say. The originals have a boxiness and growl that I've not seen replicated.

I'm tempted to try a W&C Box of War. There's a comparison on Youtube that sounds spot-on...

You might be I. To something g there. There is Definately a difference, the sovtek is more growly, but at the end if the day I just need something that can get close enough for gigs. If I even need to record something ill Get a genuine sovtek!

I've used a friend's green Russian muff which I repaired for him and owned the newer Bass Big Muff, and it's not a night and day difference between them if you ignore the blend mode on the BBM. I suspect there's as much variation between individual Russian muffs as there is between a given green Russian and most clones.

I tried a bunch of fuzz pedals recently, looking for a very specific sound. I tried an EH Double Muff, EH Bass Big Muff Pi and a BYOC Shin Ei clone with a custom mid-scoop (bit random that last one, but I fancied building my own pedal and the BYOC kits looked quite easy to put together). None of them gave me the tone I was after, which was something highly distorted but wihout much sustain. The fuzz pedals all seemed too buzzy and had no way to dial down the sustain. Then I saw a YouTube demo of the Darkglass B3K. The second example of the effected sound ("heavy distortion") was exactly what I was looking for. It can also do fuzz sounds, but it excels at the kind of distortion I associate with Motorhead. It also keeps the attack and bottom end intact, so I can even use it for fast parts played low on a detuned bass. May be what you're looking for, and the build quality is excellent - they're no longer made in Finland, but by a guy in the US who seems to have a thing about durability.

I have one, its is brilliant. I still havn't tried a Tall Font, but i can't see it beating the BoW. It sounds almost identical to one of my old Civil War muff's, and the box is even cooler than the Arc :)

There seems to be a bit more harmonic content and depth in the Green Muff, having said that, Green Muff's can vary hugely between them, let alone between clones.
Probably based on the price, the size and the decent tonal approximation, the BoW would be of interest.....but then for me, buying a kit would work too.
I've got a GGG Green Muff I need to finish, so will be interesting to hear that.

Don't know if you have tried the couple you listed?

Wren and Cuff small font Russian is excellent....Burgs actually does a demo using a guitar and a bass.

The Arc Effects big green pi. It has two internal dip switches to lift the mids and diode lift aimed directly at Bass users.

I have owned both and from memory would say the Arc Effects had more flexibility but I think you still have to buy direct from the builder. He will mark the package up to say hi to UK Customs as it passes through if you ask him nicely though :-)

The one other that springs to mind is Fredric Effects Green Russian. I have no experience with this builder but Joe stocks them so should be decent stuff.
