molan
Hi All, The wonderful bass wizard Paul Turner has personally donated a pair of tickets to high end bass retailer BassGear.co.uk, from Twyford near Reading, to see his super funky new band Shuffler for their album launch gig at the Jazz Cafe in London on Friday 29th March. We thought we'd team up with Basschat and offer them to everyone here as a little competition prize In order to win all you have to do is 'like' the BassGear FaceBook page https://www.facebook.com/BassGearUK and subscribe to their monthly newsletter by sending an email with the header "Subscribe" to . If you're already on the list and/or have subscribed previously you have no need to worry - you won't start getting two newsletters if you send another 'subscribe' email. If you're not a FaceBook user that's obviously not a problem either - BassGear don't expect you to sign up to FB just to enter Some background about Shuffler: "The four-piece band, formed in 2011, combine the incomparable musicianship skills of Paul Turner – bass; Rob Harris – guitar; and Derrick McKenzie – drums, with the precocious vocal and percussion talent of Daniel Pearce" Essentially this is the core of the Jamiroquai live sound with Daniel on vocals and percussion - they are seriously funky and the freedom of having their own band really lets Paul, Rob & Derrick let rip in a live environment! http://www.shufflermusic.net/ https://www.facebook...erMusic?fref=ts Twitter: @shufflermusic Paul will also try to catch up with the competition winners to say hi at the Jazz Cafe - for anyone who's never been there it's a great little venue. You're not far from the stage wherever you stand! JTUK
I'd be going, Barrie, if I hadn't had a gig on this date in my diary for ages. I still hope to get to see Paul and Dan if they announce a date closer to Dan's home town. I'll even lend him a bass rig :lol

molan
Pleased to announce that Mrtcat has won a pair of tickets to see Shuffler at the Jazz Cafe in London tomorrow night courtesy of Paul Turner himself. Although the tickets are free it seems that Mrs Mrtcat may be trying to wangle a new frock out of the deal - sounds fair to me Should be a cracking gig - still some tickets available on the night if anyone wants to come along for some serious funk & grooves http://mamacolive.com/thejazzcafe/listings/upcoming-events/8377/shuffler/

molan
Please put positive vibes out to Paul and his family as his oldest son has been in and out of hospital since Tuesday. Still needing further medical attention.
Heard from Paul earlier today. Band on stage at 21:00 sharp. Paul probably won't be around for long afterwards Everything crossed for his son's speedy recovery
molan
Well - that was good then! The band were all individually excellent but Paul really stood out tonight. I've seen a lot of seriously good live players in my time but this really was a man absolutely at the top of his game. It's a bit of a cliche but his live sound tonight was tone to die for. Very possibly the best live bass sound I've ever heard. Great depth, powerful punchy mids and fabulous snap and sizzle on the high end. Really hard to describe the tonal quality we were hearing and it sat absolutely perfectly in the mix. For those gear heads amongst us he used his '66 J for most of the evening and strapped on the Alleva Coppolo 5 for one song which added a real 'muscularity' to the, already, great tone. Core rig was an Aguilar DB751 and a pair of GS 4x10's. Paul is usually a DB man but the GS's seemed to add a bit more bite to his tone. Looked like there was Reddi feeding the desk and I think his pedal board had a Diamond Compressor, an Akai Deep Impact, an original Musitronics Mutron plus some more. There was someone filming all night, if a live film manages to catch just how good the sound was it'll be a killer watch!
mrtcat
Still grinning. Was a killer gig and Paul Turner was insanely good. As a band they have great chemistry and they all looked like they were having a great time. And yes.......as molan says the bass sound was immense. Clearly Paul Turner is a focal point in the band because it sounded almost like the kick drum sound had been sacrificed a little to allow the bass to really breathe in the sweet spot. Bought the album and it's excellent. If you get a chance to see them then do so as they are tighter than a mosquito's tweeter and it would be worth it just for the "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" cover they do. Daniel Pearce is bloody good too! Massive thanks to Bassdirect and Barrie for the tickets, the wife and I had a great night. Her classic comment was "maybe you should invite Paul Turner to one of your gigs next time".................bless her.
