Looks great, but not a huge fan of the ash tray, they look OK on more classic styled basses, but this has a much more modern vibe to it so it looks a little out of place.
Very nice take on the J Bass though :)

What do you mean by 'sharp body edge' - it might just be my pics but the body is cut away under the arm like a normal Jazz body.

retain price is in the blog post - about £560 which is a steal. However I don't know if Jeff has found a UK importer yet so give him a shout for more info.

not fan of ashtray or sharp body edge, but other than that this looks nice. I wonder how much it would be in the UK?
Not too fussed about the preamp either, but meh :)

We actually started our first builds with an passive set up. Basslines STK or D'Marzio. We like to add a 6 rotary Varitone to the set up. As far as European orders, I do provide some discounting to help offset the final cost. I have a passive bass completed and can send you information if you wish. Link to the passive Newport photos. Looks good, even though I'm not an EMG Expander enthusiast. My first thoughts are...does a mahogany body add much weight..is there any sonic benefit over alder/poplar....love the truss rod adjuster.

It's not the lightest Jazz I've tried... I'll try and weigh it for you, unless Jeff knows the weight?

one that's a great price :)
The sharp edge being the edge radius on the body - fenders tend to have a reasonably large one, sadowskys have the more 'modern' looking sharper on.
This is a bass I once had with sharper edges - just prefer a little less - but thats just me and not a biggie! :)

Hmmm you sure? I'm looking at two Sadowsky basses right now and they are quite a 'soft' wide curve to the body edges and I'm pretty sure that the two USA basses I had were similar.

Ah I see! I once had a slab body Jazz and it hurt my forearm as the whole body was like that. Sounded nice though.

The cut-away contours on your JV look very 'curved' but when I compare the Sados to the Buscanti and the bass you posted, the Sados are a lot closer to the JV.
ok.... the ones I played weren't particularly good representatives of all of them! It's odd that the JV's are so big, but when I used to have that John Entwhistle one the non slab but pre mid 60's bodies looked more curvy than the later 60's ones.
Anyway...

It's funny how simple things like these contours affect us though; for instance I genuinely wouldn't buy a Fender style bass with those edges and it is one of the reasons that I don't get on with Rics! ;)

Body wood, on solids have a minimal impact on the tone. Buy an acoustic and you can talk for 6 hours and 12 pints of ale about wood tones. But by the time you get done adjusting the tone / Pickup controls on the bass and the (whatever eq set up) you have on the amplifier, you've pretty much eliminated any distinction with the solid body wood. Tone is even less apparent when the body is painted. That said, mahogany (standing on its own) is said to have a slightly warmer tone. Though as Ped attests, the bass is more growly which IMHO is due to the influence of the EMG electronics. The weight on these mahoganies is lighter than the alders and closer to the poplars. Ped's Newport is a light weight guys.
I think once you get beyond a reasonable quality and aesthetics our preference is possibly ALL about the little things. Like after the JV and streamer normal fenders feel sharp on the edge which I don't like. Also sold a few basses, and good basses, not because they were heavy but just because I had got used to the lighter weight basses I have.

If any one wins the lottery between now and Saturday, you'll be able to check out the ViBe Bass on stage at the big Blue Grass Folk Festival held in Lyons Colorado (Rocky Mountains) on Sunday. My main man Al Wolovitch is part of the Sunday line up playing for Peter Himmelman.

Has anyone noticed the neck pickup placement... thats why the pickupup cover looks unusual.... well to me anyways.... any particular reason why the neck j pup is further towards the neck..?
On this bass we decided to create more spacing. My brother (who owned a Rick Laredo) wanted to hear if the overall tonal spectrum would change with the migration of the neck pick up closer to the neck. And like the Laredo, it did just that. The bottoms come in a bit warmer. This wider spacing is not done on all our basses. For the most part they're spaced like every other Fender out there. But we routed 6 basses this way and allot of people (including Ped) like it. So, if it has some popularity, we'll continue to oblige. The bridge cover is consequently closer to the pocket, and while that's not something I would do, it's Ped's bass and so the decision to ultimately install a cover was his.

Brothers and sisters....I'll be posting a couple of other basses for sale shortly. We have a 5-string Newport and a new concept bass we call: "Areté Bäs". I know that customs, duties and shipping creates a higher price point. But we are more than happy to work it so that you aren't paying too far off from what the US bass customers pay.

I've already worked out a few things with Ped and will check back with him to find out the final import tax he paid....Thanks all for your interest.....

I am Jeff
