1. Hello Ped.. Thank you for the warm well wishes! All said and done, we made 44 basses and 1 electric guitar. Every client we met was interesting in their own way and we were fortunate to garner the patronage from 2 bassists with relative notoriety. The amazing experiences we did not anticipate was in meeting secondhand owners and to realize how far our basses have traveled. I'm excited at the wonderments this next chapter may bring me and my lovely wife Michelle who put up with much trouble and messes I made. And I will always stay in-play here and on TalkBass. Peace.... Jeff
2. Just announcing to every one here that after 18 years, my brother and I decided to call it quits on building basses. It's been a wonderfully satisfying experience. As former FT bassists, the labour of building basses for the working musician was truly satisfying. We started with Newport model which lead to ViBe, Areté Bäs, El Dorado and my personal swan song bass called Calabria. But we all have subsequent chapters in our lives to sojourn. In 2019, my brother decided to spend his spare time back in the gigs and studio. I've come to the realization decided that I can no longer do this by my lonesome. So I'm also getting back to part-time playing and recording (if I am as lucky as my brother Rah). So this, my BassChat brethren, is the final Newport and final Buscanti you will ever see from us direct. I will ship to the UK. But the customs could be a bit wacky. I think she's everything you would want in a bass to be. https://reverb.com/item/64660914-buscanti-newport-2022-tobacco-burst Peace out...
3. For sale is this this striking Hailfire bass once owned by Jared Jones bassist for the band Vetted, a band comprised entirely of wounded warrier vets. This bass was played on their 2013 tour and there are a couple of photos of Jared. I have also included his personal demo of this exact bass. We aquired it as a partial trade in for a custom bass we made for him and are now making his bass available to the bass player community. We inspected this bass top to bottom. It's in excellent condition save for couple of very light and insignificant marring / player wear on the back of the body. They're barely noticable and I was not able to capture them in photos. It's been well maintained during his time playing during the summer of 2013. Fret work is immaculate and in excellent condition. It's strung with DR Neon white strings which were Jared's. We'll be including a fresh set of round wound strings with this sale. I ussually have a few different brands you can choose. The outside of the case has some surface scratches and scuffs which is to be expected for a touring band's gear. However it's very clean on the inside. The hardware is also clean, not rusty, and in working order. (See photos) There were two modifications to the bass. 1) The E-tuning peg was swapped out for a Gotoh drop-D tuner. 2) An additional straplock button was affixed to the back of the bass, making it 3 total. The original E tuner and an additional strap button will be added to the sale of this bass. Also included is a nice Joyo utimate drive pedal that Jared personally selected to complement this bass. This will be shipped from the US. It will be a larger shipment due to the size of the case. I will calculate shipping for any interested persons and will split the shipping cost with you. 9. I am still building these basses.
10. Thanks gents...That's me. I am the guy that builds these basses. Ped has been a great client and a pleasure to work with! Yes I don't have a web presence because I don't have the bandwidth to manage one. (Mostly the inquiries) Working hard at just staying in the review sections and some social media. If you have any questions, just write me here and I'll respond within a reasonable time frame. Cheers, Jeff Herman Buscanti Basses
11. Thanks guys! This is all good feedback....And to Kev's comments, I too had that flaky experience with DR Black Beauties. I do hope your situation was an isolated experience. Because, if the set I have coming flakes, I'll likely give up the idea on Elixir no matter how great they sound. Cheers, Jeff
12. Hey all- I was going to try out the Elixir string as an alternate option to the Markley Blue Steel's we typically use in the basses we build. I'll have a chance to try them for myself as I have a set on order. We'll no doubt come have our own opinions in short order. But what I'm really interested in hearing are the opinions of others. So whether you use these strings regularly or have played them, please chime in. What are your thoughts in 10 words or less? Cheers, Jeff
13. Passing of John Polk @ Terrapin Guitars It pains me to report the passing of John Polk owner and operator for Terrapin Guitars. John and I had a relationship that began in 2007 and from the moment that he finished the first order, I knew I had found a great business partner. In his own right John was an accomplished guitarist. But his love for the instrument carried over into building guitars and making quality pick guard components for other guitarists and builders alike. This was his way of staying involved in the musician and builder communities. I enjoyed my relationship with John. He was a gentleman and in many respects a long distance friend; one that I will never be able to meet over a pint of ale and a hand shake. (At least on this earth.) John’s work was his craft and he had a passion for the acrylic and celluloid slabs he cut and shaped into works of art. I knew this in his personality, in the way he treated his clients, and in the final product. Even after being diagnosed with stomach cancer in early 2012, John did what he needed to do to ensure the continuity of his business. He made a point of training his wife Mary on how to manage the business, and took on an employee that could learn the craft inside and out in the last year of his life. While John’s time on this earth ended this past May, the legacy of what he created and who he was remains: The business of Terrapin Guitars lives on with his wife Mary and his protégé Justin! I am grateful to have known this human being and I'll always remember his spirited love for the instrument, his love for the community he served, and the love he had for his wife Mary. I'm happy to see that his legacy will continue as Mary and Justin forge ahead with the Terrapin tradition. So I will now look forward to seeing more great work coming from these folks and will continue to look to Terrapin to make great pick guards for our basses. May God rest your soul John, as it should be for one of the good guys. 14. I acquired this last month from someone in an exchange for one of our Buscanti custom basses As many of you know, I build basses on the side. What many of you don't know is that I'll never turn down a trade-in if it's a vintage bass or guitar. I acquired this Sabre with the intention of adding it to my Sabre guitar and bass guitar collection. But our little Dachshund Tovah recently went under the knife for a serious life saving operation, and now I must pay for a very expensive Vet bill. This is a 1979 Music Man Sabre Bass. It's unique in that the neck is 1.5 inches at the nut and the total weight comes in just under 9 pounds/ 4 KG. For a short period, Music Man made a run of Sabres with that more narrow width and a lighter weight. So this an even more rare instrument in the group of Sabres, and it's certainly thought of as the icing on the cake by many affictionados. The bass is gorgeous and has the best of both worlds. It has been carefully played and well cared for over the years. The nature of it's previous home in the Northwest US, has allowed ther bass to aged beautifully. The previous owner is a recording artist that played and owned several instruments including horns, violins, drums and keys. He used this bass in some of his recordings and occasionally played it live in other events. There is a beautiful Patina happening. The hardware is clean with no rust or corrosion. It has that really cool vintage mat finish on the tuning keys. The finish on the natural wood body is crystal clear with no clouding with some vintage checking through out the finish. All Parts are original and in working condition. The frets are impeccable I would put a 10-15% wear on them. There are a few nicks in the finish only as should be expected, and the poly coat has some small wearing in all the right places. What I mean by all the right places is that it's seen in spots, but not in places that disturb your play. I just did a set up and calibration for intonation. There is ample room in the truss rod and there was no fret crowning needed! All of the electronics look great. I inspected the inside and did a light vacum. I removed the neck to inspect the date stampings. The bass will look the mojo vintage part on stage and play even better. The Case is also original. It's in excellent condition given it's age. No rust, no breaks. All latches work as they should and the inside red micro-fibre material is clean and looks hardly worn. I'm attaching a link of the photos to my photobucket page. Now please take note that Photobucket is in the midst of upgrading it's site and in the process has de-activated some of the functionality including links to galleries. So, I'm attaching a photo here as well. If you can't access the gallery would like to see more, just send me your email and I'll try to get a link or more photos to you. This is a really nice bass. http://s136.photobuc...%20Man%20Sabre/ My asking price of $2,290 includes the case, and international shipping! That's right. I'll cover the shipping. Please be sure to check your currency conversion charts to find out the price in pounds. Finally, in addition to the original black pickguard that dones this bass, I will throw in a White Pearloid Pickguard. This was custom made by none other than John Polk himself at Terrapin Guitars. John has a Sabre Bass Pickguard template that is dead on perfect to the original. So you'll get the extra coolio white pearl pickguard in addition to the original black guard! Please no trade offers. I have everything I need, and what I do need is to pay the Vet bill. Interested persons can email me at: [email protected]. I'm in the USA. Thanks!
15. Lot's emails and PM's sent from you guys. Thanks for the interest. I have a few points to make being that the same questions come up with great regularity: First, since we only build these part time and because we are only 2 blokes, I am literally looking 4 months out on custom orders. It's not something I can shorten unless I leave my full-time job. Not going to do that. Second, I have a handful of finished basses that I have always had for sale and would rather sell those at a discount which brings me to me 3rd point. Third, unfortunately I cannot build custom basses for the price of the non-ordered inventory that we are selling. It's simply not possible. The non-ordered inventory were builds that dovetailed other builds or were part of a lower parts buy which happens periodically. I will provide the best possible price and will do what is necessary to ensure that the bass gets to you at a reasonable shipping fee. We have reviews on several sites and I do not plan to put up a Website. If you want a very local and relevant opinion on our basses, contact the Forum Admin, because as you can tell, PED is also a Buscanti owner. Cheers, Jeff
16. Brothers and sisters....I'll be posting a couple of other basses for sale shortly. We have a 5-string Newport and a new concept bass we call: "Areté Bäs". I know that customs, duties and shipping creates a higher price point. But we are more than happy to work it so that you aren't paying too far off from what the US bass customers pay. I've already worked out a few things with Ped and will check back with him to find out the final import tax he paid....Thanks all for your interest..... I am Jeff
17.
not fan of ashtray or sharp body edge, but other than that this looks nice. I wonder how much it would be in the UK? Not too fussed about the preamp either, but meh
Ashtray is always the customer's call. You'll be saving us $10 on your order
18.
Has anyone noticed the neck pickup placement... thats why the pickupup cover looks unusual.... well to me anyways.... any particular reason why the neck j pup is further towards the neck..?
On this bass we decided to create more spacing. My brother (who owned a Rick Laredo) wanted to hear if the overall tonal spectrum would change with the migration of the neck pick up closer to the neck. And like the Laredo, it did just that. The bottoms come in a bit warmer. This wider spacing is not done on all our basses. For the most part they're spaced like every other Fender out there. But we routed 6 basses this way and allot of people (including Ped) like it. So, if it has some popularity, we'll continue to oblige. The bridge cover is consequently closer to the pocket, and while that's not something I would do, it's Ped's bass and so the decision to ultimately install a cover was his.
19. If any one wins the lottery between now and Saturday, you'll be able to check out the ViBe Bass on stage at the big Blue Grass Folk Festival held in Lyons Colorado (Rocky Mountains) on Sunday. My main man Al Wolovitch is part of the Sunday line up playing for Peter Himmelman. http://www.bluegrass.com/folks/lineup.html
20.
Looks good, even though I'm not an EMG Expander enthusiast. My first thoughts are...does a mahogany body add much weight..is there any sonic benefit over alder/poplar....love the truss rod adjuster.
Body wood, on solids have a minimal impact on the tone. Buy an acoustic and you can talk for 6 hours and 12 pints of ale about wood tones. But by the time you get done adjusting the tone / Pickup controls on the bass and the (whatever eq set up) you have on the amplifier, you've pretty much eliminated any distinction with the solid body wood. Tone is even less apparent when the body is painted. That said, mahogany (standing on its own) is said to have a slightly warmer tone. Though as Ped attests, the bass is more growly which IMHO is due to the influence of the EMG electronics. The weight on these mahoganies is lighter than the alders and closer to the poplars. Ped's Newport is a light weight guys.
21. Thanks Guys...I'm thrilled that one of my basses made it over to the UK. That brings my Euro distribution up to a whopping 3 total!
