pst62
Never had this happen before and I'm not fancying the job of trying to drill them out myself, anybody got any idea of the potential cost of getting a luthier to sort it? bartelby
can you not grab the ends with pliers? Or have the other two snapped below the wood?
flyfisher
Bit hard to make out the problem - I presume the screws have sheared off? If so, the fact that they are still sticking out of the wood should make it easy to remove them. Mole grips should do it.
pst62
bartelby. Yeah I can grab the end with pliers but, they don't grip Flyfisher . Yeah they snapped as I was removing them. I will try the Mole Grips idea if I can locate them (we moved house and everything is still upside down in the garage) Here's a better angle. flyfisher
Use the mole grips sideways, so that the teeth dig in to the screws, and adjust them to be as tight as possible. AFter the first 'squeeze', unlock the mole grips and re-tighten before locking again (because the teeth pushing into the screw threads will loosen the grip. The length of the mole grips should provide more than enough leverage to remove the screws, but be careful not to shear them off again, leaving them even shorter than before! Try small back-and-forth movements on the mole grips first, to try to loosen the grip of the wood on the screws. Good luck.
paul_5
Ooh, nasty. Mighty Mite necks are great, not seen one eat screws though. I'd second the mole grips idea, don't be tempted to 'wiggle' them out though, as you'll probably damage the holes in the neck.
ezbass
Another vote for mole grips, marvellous tool.
Ou7shined
Moleys should do the trick. Next time drill bigger holes... and rub a wax crayon or candle over the threads before screwing.

flyfisher
I'd second the mole grips idea, don't be tempted to 'wiggle' them out though, as you'll probably damage the holes in the neck.
Just to clarify, my 'back-and-forth' comment was meant to be along the axis of the screw, i.e. small anti-clockwise/clockwise movements. I entirely agree about not 'wiggling' the screws from side to side in some way, because of the risk of damaging the holes as paul_5 rightly mentioned. discreet
I resemble these remarks ...though to be completely honest, from the title I was hoping this thread would be about something else... Now I shall return to Off Topic, where I belong. It's a bit chilly in here. Edited July 10, 2012 by discreet
EdwardHimself
Lol. +1 for candle wax though although I suppose soap is easier to come by these days. I've done this before, I ended up drilling new holes.
KingBollock
The Mole Grip idea is the best, but another way, if the screws are too short but still sticking out a bit, is to either file or saw, using a hacksaw, a slot for a flat head screwdriver into the end.
