What small amp for uni?

Heya,

I currently have quite a big rig; Genz Benz STL 9.0 amp, 2x410 cabs.

I'm gonna be going off to uni in a week and obviously I can't take my rig cos it's massive, so I'm in the market for a small portable amp.

I used to own a Stagg BA-20 amp, which is around the size I'm after now, but I sold it because it was never any good for my playing style which mostly consists of aggressive slap. The amp couldn't handle it and used to cut out, like it had a built-in compressor. Maybe it just had a weak preamp...

Anyways, not really looking to spend much, just a cheap thing will do. So long as it sounds alright.

Recommendations and advice welcome, and greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Oh yeah, don't know why I didn't think of that! But the amp's 500W, so wouldn't I run the risk of blowing the cab?

I had a quick look on GAK, couldn't see any small cabs for sale. Also went on the Bass Centre but they don't seem to be selling amps anymore?

Just be sensible with the volume... If it sounds bad turn down :)

Bass Centre seems to have gone a bit... odd. For a little uni practice cab I'd be tempted by the Eden ENX110 or 112. Only around £200 new and would do the job without shelling out loads.

The Promethean extension cab looks good too.
You can always check the FS section here, although small cabs aren't too common. Plenty of ideas here:

In terms of small inexpensive combos i like the little Hartke A series - compact, loud and have a handy tilt back design. A lot of people use and like the Roland Cubes or the little Line6 110 combos too.

I'm not aware of a single 8" bass cab, if there is a manufacturer making one that could handle low end at reasonable volume it'd cost a lot more than £30-£40, otherwise we'd all be using them!

At that budget you'll be struggling to improve on the Stagg if you want something small. Might be worth setting up a local eBay search in the hope of picking up an old Peavey 2x10 or similar.

Hmm, idealy I'd wanna get a GK 112 or something like that, but they are just too expensive for a little practice amp. I had a look on ebay, there are a few PA speakers being sold but they arn't in very good condition. Theres also a Stagg BA-40 amp, 40 watts at around 50 quid, that might be my best bet. Hopefully it will be better than the BA-20 I had before...

I've been doing a bit more research and found an Orange amp, which looks promising.

It's a bit more expensive, but it's 25W instead of 40W which is what the Stagg is. Has anyone used the amp?

Or, would this PA speaker be a better option?

is that my old p bass i spy there alex? :)[/quote]
Certainly is! It went in for a full service and cleanup, and it's very fun :)

I wouldn't sell it unless it was my only option to get money for something I needed!
